  1. It's not the grammar nazi you should worry about. on Sneak Preview Of Vernor Vinge's Next Book · · Score: 3, Funny

It's the spelling nazi that will get you in the rear. SNEAK, not SNEEK.

We trust you have learned your lesson this time, no? Just be grateful that the "Lose, not Loose" guy is out of town.

magnetic heading will always be there to fall back on.

Not always, no. We're overdue for a flip in the magnetic poles. The flip itself won't happen instantaneously, and during that period there will be a lot of weird currents and local poles that would shift constantly. Magnetic heading would change drastically, possibly from day to day.

  8. What about the textures? on First All-Artificial Feature Film Released · · Score: 5, Insightful

Seriously, did the textures they use start off as photos of real life objects? Then this isn't an all-artificial movie. The first all-artificial movie will be made by an AI that has no access to any outside materials. Everything until then is just a matter of degree of human involvement.

  9. Apple's already done the work on Recording Industry Hopes To Hinder CD Burning · · Score: 2, Insightful

Apple's already taken care of this for you. It's called iTunes. If they switch to a digital only distribution method such as iTunes, then they can control how many times you can burn that particular album as it was meant to be heard by the artist. Of course, you can always copy the newly burnt disc, but that will be true of *any* copy protection that is backwards compatible with the redbook standard.

From a biological standpoint, health and beauty are very closely related. In fact, you might say the best way to make someone beautiful is to make them healthy first. That's not be how we do things now, but it will be the best way once we have the technology.

  13. Re:A handheld year on E3 Wrapup Documented · · Score: 4, Interesting

Interesting point. Here's how I see things heading regarding handhelds vs. consoles:

You handheld becomes your controller when in the living room. The console is replaced by a reciever that can coordinate the action between multiple handhelds and display it to the screen. This way you can have many more people playing, no cords necessary if you throw some bluetooth or similar tech into the handheld.

I believe Nintendo already did something similar to this with the Crystal Chronicles for Gameboy Adv. Watch for more of this to happen as handhelds catch up graphically with the consoles.

  17. Even better on Sam Lake on Video Game Storytelling · · Score: 4, Insightful

Max Payne 2's storyline was pretty good, but it got downright pretentious at moments, trying for an emotional depth that the characters just didn't deserve. And you can forget about subtlety.

No, the best storyline I've ever seen in a game is the Marathon series from Bungie. They've been out for over 9 years, and people are still discovering new depths to the story after all this time.

  19. Re:What makes you think that is a basic human righ on UK Releases Global Warming Report · · Score: 1

Sure. And I'm all ears on how having 6 kids tramples other people's rights. Or was that an attempt to distract from the issue?

Not really. I was merely pointing out that while these 6 kids might not starve, they are a burden on the economy, especially if the parents are not making enough to care for these children without support from the rest of society. It might not be trampling other peoples rights, but that doesn't make that kind of behavior acceptable.

Personally, I think we're going to end up with a Ender's Game type scenario, where people are limited by *law* to 2 children. Would it be morally and ethically right? Probably not. Would it be necessary? Most likely, and probably pretty damn soon.

Really? Who? In every developed country, there's more than enough food for everyone. Anything that can't be grown locally (due to a variety of problems) can be easily imported. The only ones I see without food are underdeveloped countries where they can't or won't develop a strong enough economy to meet the needs of the people.

It's only part 1 of (2 part?) series and it just kicked 7 different kinds of ass. I won't spoil it by telling you any of the story. Just go read it already.
