  1. Re:New Here's posting record is fanastic on Firefox 1.0 Released · · Score: 4, Informative

The only problems I've seen firefox cause are not the fault of firefox, but of poor web design. Those web designers who don't bother to test their work on anything but IE. IMHO, if you are going to be doing web design for anything more then your own personal page, you need to have numerous browsers installed on your machine, and either physical boxes or VMware session to other OSes to test, test ,test. But I suppose that is lost to many.

Thats all well and good for those lucky enough to have someone like us in their lives. I also do the same for the likes of my mother in law, sister in law, etc. However, how many more of them are out there that don't know one of us, or are unwilling to try something new? I say many. Too many.

They don't need to learn. At least that's their take on it. They include the browser with the OS. How many people who arent geeks like us will spend the time to download another browser and learn how to integrate it with their os - cuz we all know MS does not make that an easy task.. "Internet Explorer is no longer your default browser? Should I notify the FBI?!?!" etc.

Obviously there is more to the service then just a directory - How else are they deleting your pay per view movies, or restricting what football games you can record? To give some company that much control over what I can record is rediculous.

  8. Stupid. on TiVo Plans More Functionality Reductions · · Score: 0, Flamebait

I always thought the idea of tivo was stupid anyway. I mean, why should I pay someone a service charge to allow me to "record" the programming that I already pay my cable company for. I can do that, even with this old device called a "VCR". Sure digital is much cooler, but there is no need for any service to have to interact with it. I say screw tivo and it's brethren. Build your own system.

In related technology, there is a very cool piece of software out there (free download) called Usa Photo Maps - This allows you to use Microsoft's terraserver photo maps as a base for your GPS tracks and numerous other GPS functions. Very cool for overlaying your tracks after a day of hiking or skiing, or even just out driving. Downsides are that it's windows only, and terraserver data is very old.
