I didn't bother for the very same reasons you listed. I also didn't bother because SP2 doesn't play well with Athlon 64 CPU's. Microsoft even suggests bypassing the update completely.
This is probably the design for the scrapped Apple PDA Jobs talked about. Also, take a look at the pictures the Register has.... on one of them it looks like the so-called tablet has a connector similar to the one found on a iPod, which leads me to believe this was the scrapped PDA
The HP Compaq nx5000 will feature Novell Inc.'s SuSE Linux and support a CD burner, a DVD and media player, wireless connectivity and the OpenOffice software suite.
I don't think anyone's mentioned this, but the nx5000 will also be shipping with OpenOffice.org. Yay! Another alternative to Microsoft. I think this is great, but how many people will actually get one of these laptops? Hopefully, HP won't dump linux like Dell did a few years back.
Exactly. And we, as a society, need to start taking responsibility for the messes we create and leave behind instead of waiting for it to get out of hand before taking action, or leaving it for another generation to take care of.
That was my point. Someone might unknowingly/accidentally download an executable file (virus, trojan, backdoor program, whatever...) instead of the actual song if they didn't know what they were doing.
It's probably so people don't have to spend their time and energy searching for it on P2P networks. Also, they might advertise that it's safer (not to mention legal) to get it through iTunes instead as the files you're downloading through P2P networks might be of poorer quality, be a virus or something else rather than the actual song, etc.
As for the hard copy version, the plus is that it'll definitely be of higher quality since it won't be of a lossy format.
"I'm hoping that id releases a 64-bit Linux build of Doom3 like Epic has done with UT2004."
Not sure if this is what you wanted to know or not, but from MacCentral via Yahoo! news comes this regarding versions for Mac OSX and Linux:
"Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games," said Hollenshead. "More remains to be done for the OSX version of DOOM 3 and that will take some time. We won't release the OSX version until it's just as polished as the PC version. The date for OSX DOOM 3 remains 'when it's done', but I can confirm that it's definitely coming."
All I can suggest is to give it a try for a while (couple of months, a year) and see what happens. If you get a ton of spam and no important email, then turn it off.
When I had my catch-all account, I rarely got any spam, and that's probably because most spammers won't really bother with trying to send you something at afhg329087dsfljifd90hlg@domain.com or whatever.
Must I remind you of the first rule of /.? You *never* RTFA.
Unless they "tow" the car away like they did to a friends.

Really? That's odd because when I bought my PowerBook, I bought it because I specifically *did not* want a Windows machine.
And the same goes for my friends, and their friends,....
Now I can get up to 2GB of spam.
One of the main conclusions of its research was that as well as being cheaper than OSS, Microsoft is more secure than the open source alternative.
A familiar/recognizable name. Many people still know who Netscape are. Ask them about Mozilla/FireFox, etc and they'll be like, "Who?"

I thought Dell was the first to offer linux preinstalled on laptops? Guess Dell wasn't a "major PC maker" back then...

how will I know I have a phone call if I'm too busy listening to my music and playing games with it?
Moore's Law, maybe. But my Athlon puts out plenty of steam... er... heat.
Why is Qui-Gon Jinn in batman?
Just slap a couple of stickers on it, paint a racing strip across it, or ad one of 'em cathode lights to it. Should increase your frame rate ten fold.

Um... You realize this is slashdot, right? Book? Ha! When people can't even be bothered to RTFA....

You wouldn't happen to be this guy, would you?

Maybe it's because they acquired SUSE?
