the iBook *will* survive daily duty in a back pack or the bottom of a briefcase. I should know, because that's what I use to carry mine around (a back pack because I don't want people to know that I have a laptop). Anyway, i've dropped mine and it's been banged up here and there and still no problems. I even know of someone who's (accidentally) ran over theirs, and it still boots up. No major problems. I absolutely love Apple's laptops, mainly because they are so well built. I've been using them for a decade now and have no intentions to stop -- they're awesome machines.

  3. What to look for on Monitors for People with Poor Eyesight? · · Score: 2

If you can afford it, definitely an LCD display would be best. Their speed, brightness, resolution, and color accuracy can't be beat.

If an LCD is out of your budget, then when looking for a CRT, make sure it's got a low dot pitch. The smaller the dot pitch, the sharper the image and therefore less strain on the eyes.

Also, make sure the monitor has a high refresh rate for the resolution you'll have it set at. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother and more flicker-free the display will be, also having the effect of reducing eye strain. Look for something with an 85Hz refresh rate or better would be best.

And of course, the bigger the monitor the better. But that goes without saying.

At the retailer I work for, we are often instructed to do the same thing to software (i.e. Red Hat Linux, Mandrake Linux, Peachtree Accounting, Quickbooks, etc). Sometimes, manufacturers instruct us to send the items back to them, but that's getting rare.

Employees aren't even allowed to take them home or have the items donated. I've asked. If we want them, we have to pay FULL retail for them.

Supposedly, the manufacturer reimburses the company the full cost of the items once they're destroyed.

I've discovered that once a "destroy order" has been issued, that item usually gets marked down to .01 cent later on. And if the company accidentally sells that item for .01 cent, the company must (so I've been told) pay the manufacturer the original full retail for it.

My guess is that when the new iMacs are made available in March, Jobs will announce updated PowerMacs (hopefully with the rumored G5s) sometime then. And if G5s are around the corner, this gives them extra time to test the stability of the faster chips, not to mention time to ramp up production of enough chips to satisfy demand (I for one will be getting one if it is a G5).

Apple has always (as far as I can remember) distinguished their consumer models from their pro lines with different processors (603/603e vs. 604/604e, G3 vs. G4).
