The lack of software problem can easily be solved by installing a copy of Virtual PC. You can get it with any flavor of Windows (95, 98, ME, NT 4, 2000 Professional, XP) and even Linux. Once installed, you'll have access to virtually (no pun intended) any program out there.
If these new iMacs are going to be equiped with G4 processors...
"Manipulating video-distilling those 90-min. tapes of mind-numbing music recitals and awards banquets into amusing, fast-moving 3-min. shorts-is almost as simple on the new iMac, which features a fast G4 chip, just like Apple's top-of-the-line machines."
... then Jobs must be planning to announce G5 processor macs as well during his keynote speech. I can't think of any reason why he'd have all the desktop macs equiped with G4s, it just wouldn't make any sense since that would confuse consumers. There needs to be some type of distinction between the consumer line and the high end macs.
And if this does happen, I know what my next computer's gonna be.....
Oops! I forgot to mention that although the patent was filed on October 26, 1995, it's actually a *continuation* of application Ser. No. 08/132,401 which was originally filed on Oct. 6, 1993. I guess this means that they had it filed even before Apple started using it on their Newton devices way back in '94.
I doubt if this will really affect Handspring in any major way since they just license the OS from Palm. Palm will most likely be the ones who feel the pain as they're the ones who develop the OS. Besides, Handspring are going to be moving away from the Graffiti input method to that of a built-in keyboard (e.g. Handspring Treo).
I thought that's what Carnivore, I mean DCS-1000, was for. Didn't it not require a warrant or anything to be issued, therefore, it could be used pretty much at whim?
The sum of the components are surely more costly than the price of the unit itself, considering MS is losing money on them, and will continue to do so until about 2005. Estimates of Microsoft's cost to build each unit have ranged from $320 to $400, but those are probably wholesale prices anyways not retail.
"With a Dell if anything goes wrong you have to call dell and talk for hours and hours and not get anything done."
I don't know about you, but that just hasn't been the case for me. I have 3 Dell's in my home. Why? Because of their GREAT tech support and they actually honour their warranties. When the CD-ROM drive and battery went dead on the Latitude, I called them up and got replacements within 24 hours. When my 2.5 year old monitor died, I called them up and they sent out a replacement again! During each of these instances, I paid nothing -- they provided a pre-paid shipping box to ship the defective items back. And during each of these instances (as well as others) I waited no more than 15 minutes before I spoke with a tech support rep.
This is why I will continue to buy their products,.... or at least until I notice any deteriorations in service and quality.
Yeah, maybe they can just use the AVID Pettrac System
or the IdentIchip, but adapt them for humans. It
only takes seconds to implant under the skin and there's no need for anaesthetic. A quick, simple,
and painless way for our government to track our lives.
If this is the end of the keyboard, why would anyone choose to use a glove over speech recognition software for typing? I'm sure that by the time this glove technology is perfected, speech recognition technology will have advanced even further.
Besides, typing using sign language would also mean that millions of people would then have to learn sign language first before they could type. Whereas with speech recognition, there would be no time wasted in retraining people (i.e. employees).
Actually, if the CDs ever turn out to be anything like the Michael Jackson ones where it prevents the average listener from playing it on his/her computer CD-ROM drive, then Yes, Joe Public WILL care.
I think it might be a cheaper solution for Gateway because I was told by a couple of Gateway employees that they see a higher rate of DOA (dead on arrival) complaints/problems for their Athlon-based systems than Intel ones. It might have something to do with the Athlons burning up during initial bootup when the heat sink accidentally falls off during shipping or something else. But in any case, if they have to replace every dead Athlon processor and/or Motherboard with new ones, sticking with Athlon can become costly.
On the otherhand, Intel's P4's have some thermo monitoring thingy which will shut the processor down in case the heat rises too high, thereby saving the P4's life. This might be the reason why using Intel chips are less costly.
Will these terrorist attacks continue and get worse, resulting in the government declaring martial law, whereupon the Army will take over N.Y.C. and other nearby cities? This is a very scary situation we're in. And just to think I had planned a trip to N.Y. last week (I live in Los Angeles), but cancelled at the last moment.
but what would be even nicer is if we had a way to find out if the bathroom smelled before we went in. They could probably use the technology that's been developed by Digi Scents, which would transmit scents over a computer. I think that they've gone out of business (correct me if I'm wrong), but their iSmell Personal Scent Synthesizer would be pretty handy. It basically consists of a speaker-sized computer device that attaches either to the serial or USB port and plugs into a standard electrical outlet. And with a click of a mouse, the device would release naturally based vapors. Now that'd be cool!
Oh, great! Looks like what people have been saying will come true -- The DMCA will stifle innovation, quality, security,.... etc. Now whenever there's a flaw in something, people will be too afraid to report it, for fear of being prosecuted under the DMCA. Back to the Dark Ages for us!
"4 corporations account for 50.4% of web traffic.. sounds like 50.4% of web users 'vote' for those sites with their usage."
I don't necessarily think web users "vote" for those sites with their usage. It's probably more along the lines of web users voting for those sites because those site are set as their default homepage. So, for example, everytime an AOL or MSN user logs on, it automatically "votes" for AOL/MSN, making it one of the most visited sites.
I'd say that's a pretty accurate assessment of the way consumers think. I had one guy come in looking for a new P4 system. I tried to convince him to get an Athlon, explaining to him how much he'd save, yet getting equal if not better performance (bang for the buck). But he just wouldn't have it. His reasoning? "My Intel stock is doing/has performed better than my AMD stock; Therefore, Intel must be better (because more people are buying their chips???). I'll never buy anything from AMD again!"
Yes, there was another hearing that same day, but it was at another courtroom and at another location. It was regarding the DVD Copy Control Assn. v. Andrew Bunner case. This hearing was at the California's Sixth Appellate Court, located at 333 West Santa Clara Street, Suite 1060, San Jose, CA 95113.

Well, if they're nearly as talented as those behind Windows XP, then you my friend are screwed!

According to US Patent # 5,596,656 and a Register article, the patent was filed on October 26, 1995 and was issued on January 21, 1997.

Sheesh! Yet another reason why Windows sucks. Can't Microsoft get anything right?

Um... there was a typo there too. 5*$5,000,000 is actually $25,000,000.
