  1. Hmmmm on Phantom Game Console Presentation · · Score: 1

A few questions about this topic came up also. People enquired about a quality control system for these games, to ensure that not any ol' hack could just upload their half baked junk on the Infinium servers. The details for that were sketchy, and Rob said the framework wasn't really in place. He did say that he had "thousands" of interested parties contacting him weekly with games and ideas. One other attendee asked how his game would be noticed among these "thousands", especially if he was a small indie developer. Rob dodged this question quite a few times, but eventually he bit the bullet and admitted that developers who wanted front page recognition would have to pay a higher "slotting fee" to receive it. This caused audible consternation in the room. It seems that there's no escaping paying money for shelf space, be it on an end cap at CompuGiant or in the virtual halls of Infinium's shopping sites.

It seems to me that some sort of user rating system could be put in place, and also users could make lists of their favorite games (or games of a certain genre etc.) that everyone could see. Much like Amazon.com does. If you're an indie game developer and you have a great game, the ratings will show users the way to your game.

  2. Sigh.... on Where Are The Videogame Soundtracks? · · Score: 1

What happened to the good ole' days, where the game CD actually had audio tracks on it and you could just pop it into an audio CD player and listen to the music from the game? I remember doing that a lot with my Quake II and Descent II CD's - both had great soundtracks, Quake had NIN and Skinny Puppy did the soundtrack for Descent if my memory serves correctly. All you had to do was skip the first "track", which was the game data.

  3. Re:Don't go "there" on EMusic Acquired, Halting Unlimited Downloads · · Score: 1

I think they counted for this, and have been severely capping the downloads. I used to be able to download 4 songs at a time, really really really fast, and now the emusic downloader is only downloading one song at a time, painfully slow.....and it needs to be restarted every few minutes.

This sucks bigtime. Emusic was the best.

(returns to downloading as much as possible before Nov. 8)

Right on. I was watching tv the other day, and one of those "The More You Know" ads came on, where celebrities give you nice living tips. Anyway, it was David Schwimmer, and he was talking about how he didn't like to be judged by the way he looked, and neither should you. The first thing that came into my mind was "Shut up, you're a celebrity, no one judges you for the way you look." But then part of me was glad at least SOMEONE was trying to get a good message out to people.

This ad was followed by a gym commercial (where they promised they could make you look better), a clothing store commercial (wherein the main character is noticed because of her fancy coat she bought at said store), and then an acne cream commercial - where of course, they show you the "before" picture of the girl, and then the "after" picture shows her being happy - and with a boy.

Advertising makes me sick to my stomach.

Recall it because it fails to work if someone keeps going AFTER it gives them a low battery warning???

That's like saying they should recall cars because you could run out of gas on the highway and die, even though they have a handy gas gauge and some put on a little light to tell you when you're pretty much empty. I don't think they should recall something because of user stupidity.

Now I'm not a Segway advocate by any means (I think they're ridiculous), but this is stupid.

    Is recall fever spreading?

  7. Cool on Home-brewing a 1.2TB IDE to Firewire Monster · · Score: 1

I should look into this to use for storing video files. I need to be able to use huge video files to edit and composite on both a Windows/Linux box and my Mac, and obviously I can't afford a fancy RAID server thingie, so something like this would be perfect - just move a cable around.

And yeah, I think Firewire would be fast enough.

  13. I don't think so on Cubism For CG And Movies · · Score: 1

The final scene, in which Neo shuts his eyes and stops the robots with his mind, then passes out, opens a lot of interesting possibilities. It hammered home the point that "Zion", rather than being a wasteland city in the real world, is really just a bit-bucket for storing the minds of those who reject The Matrix. All those people are still plugged in, including Neo. As we exited the movie, a friend of mine suggested that the reason why Neo seemed to pass out was because when he stopped the robots, it was because his mind reached a state of enlightenment which saw through this second layer of illusion, and he woke up, finally exiting the Matrix.

Remember how Agent Smith said that when Neo "merged" with him some of his code got mixed up or exchanged and that's how Smith is able to do some of the things he does? I'm pretty sure Neo's brain got mixed up a little too and got some of Smith's "code" in his brain. Parts that let him control machines, that is. So I'm pretty confident Neo will realize this in Revolutions and use his newfound powers to save the day. Wahoo.

  18. Re:Wow! on Matrix Revolutions Trailer Released · · Score: 1

That would mike kind of sense, because my friend and I hypothesized that when Neo hit Smith in the original Matrix, when they "melded" together or whatever, Smith got some of Neo's "code" and Neo got some of Smith's "code" - thus making Smith more human-like and Neo more machine-like, which explains how Neo can control those sentinels near the end of Reloaded. (DON'T get me started on the nested matrices shit. If they did that, I'd have to kill the Wachowskis myself to pay back the writers of the Thirteenth Floor.)

Although I really don't see how Smith could become human, unless he figured out a way to take over someone in the Matrix and "wake up".

...this doesn't compare the the far worse cancellation of the Clerks animated series. That show was hi-fucking-larious, but ABC (bad network in the first place) put it in a horrible time slot (I think it was at like 9:30 or 10:00). They aired two episodes, then cancelled it.

To be fair, it wouldn't have been funny at all to people who haven't seen Clerks, so it didnt' really appeal to many people. But it could have lasted a lot longer if they had put it on Fox or even HBO or something and given it a decent timeslot. They made 6 episodes, and they're available on DVD for like 15 bucks, complete with intros for each episode by Jay and Silent Bob and commentaries by Kevin Smith. High quality.

Would it have been possible to make something that can take PS2 discs? I remember that portable PSX that guy made, it didn't seem too bad. Another idea would be to make a discman-like device you put in your pocket but it has a cable running to a screen/control pad thing. I saw a portable DVD player made by Sony at the Metreon last year based on that idea (although it was just a screen, no control pad).
