I guess now that they've fixed a lot of bugs with radeon drivers in the new X.org release, things seem to be looking good in that direction.

You need only look at what Microsoft Office or Windows could do 10 years ago and what these programs cost back then and what possibilities they offer today at what price. The costs are going down; the capabilities are increasing with tremendous speed.

seriously though, there isnt a whole lot of changes between msword 97 and msword 2003. In fact, they've made things even harder to do with the newer version. They've actually *removed* quite a number of features in their office suites and made it harder to do things. Other stuff like exporting .eps figures in visio - quite necessary with latex documents. Why did they do that? I think the answer is pretty obvious.
  8. openoffice on Bill Gates Claims OSS Has Poor Interoperability · · Score: 1
What he really means of course, is free alternatives trying to interoperate with Microsoft's non-documented proprietary standards.

programs like openoffice. they're trying overly hard in reverse engineering microsoft's proprietary standards that they don't seem to have enough man power to make the program _actually_useable_. there are so many little things like word count and thesaurus - and more important things like program start up load times. (maybe, just MAYBE, a better UI where things under the menu bar actually belong to its category?) These things are so vital to the user that if he or she doesn't find, will ultimately stop using the program altogether.

I just think that no matter how hard you try, you can only get so much closer to 90% of word compatibility - once it's "close enough", it's better to spend time on having those basic things and brining in better "killer" features to make your app more deadly to attract more users. more users= more bug support and bug reports and more people will be interested in your projects = more developers.

The truth is, email apps are excellent with evolution/thunderbird/kmail. browser with mozilla/firefox - a lot of apps are at the right place - the most important one, the office suite is at the worst state for desktop/ office cubicle use.

All the following steps basically replaced the ones outlined in linuxdoc.org, i think...

here's how i do it on my debian machine. few steps (why cant they just make it work out of the box), but really easy nevertheless.

    dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig
then select whether you want crt/lcd rendering

    apt-get install msttcorefonts
automatically downloads and installs microsoft truetype fonts

    "kcontrol trick"
kde's control center -> sys admin -> font installer

go into administrator mode (root). wait for your dont need to do anything. just wait for a few minutes while your font cache is being updated.

this also updates your "/etc/fonts/local.conf" file so you dont have to
    do it manually.

goto font appearences & themes -> fonts

    run gnome-font-properties

I think that's still too many logical steps, but for now, these should all work for any distro except the dpkg-reconfigure and apt-get parts.
