In highschool, I was one of the top students of my class in all subjects I studied. When I was in college, I was one of the students with the worst GPA. I havent been using the internet that much until university, when I started spending at least 8 hours a day at the computer not doing anything academic related. It can be accounted to a couple of things like electrical engineering is much more difficult than the mickey mouse canadian highschool cirriculum, but having the added distraction didnt help either.

Back then it was a guarentee that EE grads get job offers before finishing their bachelors. Of course, looking back I wish I had spend more time on books, and solving problem sets using the old-fashion pencil and paper. If I had done that I would actually be employed having a better GPA.

Having said that, I was able to look at course websites from other universities and also online publications. So it's helpful in that sense - a lot of it has to do with the person's attitude whether they want to do better in school, I'd say.

i paid for cable for the sole purpose of getting the sports channels so i could watch some basketball. unfortunately not all the games can be found on the net. there are some you'll find on suprnova.org, and even some older classic games (bull vs lakers '91 for example). not only are the two sports channels i get are on seperate packages, but the majority of the games are shown on the channel with the more expensive one. for whatever reason, even during the nhl lockout, they've decided to air minor league hockey, and more (guess what) curling instead of basketball.

i'm living in montreal, which basically has videotron as a monopoly - all i get are TSN and sportsnet-east , and all i get this week are 2 NBA games. Why do I want the bundled crapload of quebecois channels in my cable package? Yes, they even have a remake of paris hilton/ nicole richie's "the simple life" in french with their own montreal "actresses" WITH the exact theme song!

hong kong is known as a one of the major financial capital in asia. parents raise their kids to be businessmen. almost all of them value success as in making tons of money that they'll never even get to spend. being encouraged to study in degrees of electrical engineering or computer science is very rare. lot of people on /. agree that people got into tech only because of the pre-bubble times, not because of their interest in the subject. well in hk, all you get are the bandwagon types. not making this up. i spent 10 yrs of my life there.

it's not the educational system because math and science cirriculum is far more advance and fast paced than in canada and the US, so it's not the fault of highschool programs not preparing the kids well enough to pursue their careers in that direction.

cyberport is mostly for IT (damn i hate that term) - and the buildings were only built for the "looks". honestly, if i want to build a startup there, let's say a fabless semiconductor company, do i really need the 100 megabits a second network? we need the CAD licenses, engineers with experience and fresh grads in EE - which are tough to get there because hong kong university recently shut down their EE department...

another thing, people in hk always have the misconception that they are more advance in tech than north americans. all they see is that they have more variety of advance products to choose from, but it's not them that do any of the in-house design.

all said, it's good to know that there are still people that would invest (or throw away money) for the ...um IT industry. at least after i finish my masters in electrical engineering here in canada, i'll have something to fall back on, knowing that i speak the language there...

    uh... no....

I use debian because it takes zero effort to upgrade packages - no BS, and if there's a change in the default /etc files, i have the option of keeping my old config or use the new package maintener's version. Unlike rpms, the debian packaging system doesnt just dump the files. it checks more than that.

I dont ever have to download ISOs and reinstall the OS from scratch.

There's also a lot less crap installed on my machine than distros like Mandrake or Redhat.

I dont have to worry about rpm packages breaking my system. Packages aren't outdated because I'm running unstable...

I actually find it quite easy to install with their newest installer

i'd rather spend time getting work done than wasting time configuring my system and updating broken packages. I don't want to read packages of documentation from linuxdoc. I just want things to work without the need of manually changing LD_LIBRARY_PATH or using a distro that comes with a beta version of gcc (redhat).

i'm not entirely sure that quality jobs are moving to canada. i agree with tech support jobs coming here, but i dont see any EE jobs. on the contrary, my school's career fair had a record number of EE-related companies this year since 2001 (sounds like an exaggeration -- there were only 4 and that was "good").

to be honest, as a master student about to graduate in EE, i have not much of a clue as in to how i'm going to find a decent career-related job anywhere (in canada or US).

Seriously, how hard is it to get firefox installed in the labs. one of my ee labs at school have mozilla installed but the default profile is broken and you're unable to save your preferences and half of the time it doesn't even start. honestly though, i hate wasting time tweaking things and want things to just work so i can put spend time in doing actual work. if things like mozilla aren't set up properly, people just wont use them. after a while, they'll not think about its existance and totally forgetting about it altogether, even when it's not the school computer they're using.
