As to why his students feel the need to mention it to him all the time, well, I think he might want to consider that it's not that they're fascinated by his penis; it's more that they're just teenagers taking the piss out of their teacher. It does happen, you know :)

Actually, this reminds me of one time when I was talking to some young female shop assistants in Tokyo and had the following conversation:

Giggling assistants: What are you doing this weekend?

    Me: Nothing much. You?

    GA: We're going to Mitaka!

Me: Why Mitaka? It's a dump.

GA: But there is an american army base near there ! We want to try and fuck some black guys on Saturday. They have the biggest dicks!

Me: Right... er... see you on Monday, then.

Not a stereotype, though, just a fact about relative penis size and a tribute to the uninhibited, jaded nymphomania which seems to mark a large chunk of the Japanese population.

But I swear something like 10% of Japanese marry non-Japanese; it's got to be the highest ratio ever. And the success of books like 'Darling wa gaikokujin' underlines the point yet further; Japanese LOVE the idea of mixing with foreigners to the point that a very high proportion of them are willing to _marry_ pretty much just on that basis alone. We don't have a panning tool because we have lots of other ways to scroll. The best of them are middle-drag and ctrl+arrows. Try them, you may like them better when you get used to them.

    That's a major problem.

Middle-drag and ctrl+arrows may suit _you_, but try them while using a tablet. Using space to pan (real space bar, or map space to some of the buttons on your tablet/drawing tool) does not involve putting down your pen, using the mouse or cursor keys, and then picking the pen up again. I understand that it would be technically possible to operate the mouse with my foot or cover ctrl and the cursor keys all with my non-pen hand, but...

I realize that if you don't use tablets and zoom a lot there's no reason you would have thought of this. It's all a matter of individual working style. What you should have done is reflect on why other applications have panning tools and what use people might have for them. What you did do was announce that you have plenty of ways to pan that suit you personally just fine, and advise the user to get used to them.

The problem here is _not_ your lack of a panning tool; that's just a little problem that should be trivial to fix.

I love SVG but I think I have to mark my expectations for Inkscape down a notch if this is typical of the project philosophy.

    Easy to write for

It was designed to be an efficient single-user graphical OS, specially for use in multimedia (ie they couldn't think of any other niche for it). As a result it's much faster than Unix/Linux and much cleaner and freindlier than Windows for doing GUI tasks and as a platform for video codecs.

In terms of apps, the big open source projects (firefox, vim etc) are all there, but there's precious little else.

The main DISadvantage is that nobody uses it and there's not the slightest chance that anybody ever will :) However, it is more comfortable and responsive to use than any other OS I can think of -- a bit like using NeXT, in fact, if anyone remembers those.
