Yes, but on a Unix / Linux OS the admin (or you, if you are the admin) can always SSH (or other remote access method of choice) in to the machine and restart the X server. This way any other jobs on your machine can continue running and complete their task.
As far as I know, there's no way to restart the GUI in Windows if it gets hung for any reason without restarting the entire machine. That means if you're running some kind of task in the background, be it a simulation of some sort, burning a CD, downloading a file, whatever, you have to kill it to get your desktop back.
In a corporate environment you would usually have administrators know how to diagnose and recover from these things. System hangs? Give the helpdesk a call and they'll restart your GUI for you and you can keep on going. If you're on a Windows machine, the best they can suggest is a reboot and you lose your work.
Heh, good to point this out. If you look at the "Insider Trades" link on Yahoo Finance, SCO insiders have sold of 2,246,000 shares in the last 6 months (~25%). Looks like they don't have much faith in their company..
Definitely. I purchased a Canon A75 this summer and I couldn't be happier with it. One day I may purchase a DSLR but for now I'm probably just going to grab the telephoto adapter for this cam so I can get a bit more zoom. You can still take good photos (shameless plug) With an inexepensive point and shoot cam.
Definitely good, your site rocks:) Books could possibly use some better categorization especially if you start adding any more, but overall it's an awesome resource.
Discovered this one over the summer and played with some friends online. Would love an actual board game version. Great strategy game, especially since you're forced to barter with other players to succeed, there's lots of strategy involved.
No kidding. I bought an effects pedal on sale for $35 US (originally $125 US) and had it shipped here to Canada. Unfortunately the "value" on the package was marked "$125 USD" instead of the sale price, so I got dinged about $30 CAD on duty fees. Doh.
To make things worse, the product was defective and I had to send it back. Fortunately the company I bought it from had a really good warranty policy and I had shipping free both ways on my repair. Unfortunately when it crossed the border on the way back, I got dinged $30 duty AGAIN even though you're not supposed to.
I was going to appeal the fees but after seeing the complexity of the procedure and the inordinate number of forms I'd need to fill, I just cut my losses.
I try to avoid ordering stuff from the US ever since...
Regarding the X thing, I believe this is somehow session manager related. Anyway, KDE gets this bit right as it will pop up the window on the desktop you originally launched the app on. I'm sure the same could be done for other environments as well.
Super easy to build. We made a bunch of boards for some elementary school kids and had them solder on the components and play with the thing in general. We were kind of time limited to a few hours, but it was a good experience.
It says you can't switch your GPL software to a commerical license. I don't see it forbidding you compiling GPL software using the commerical Win32 version and distributing with a GPL license.
Another type of person who goes for a desktop replacement is people like my father. He wants to use the same machine in both the office and at home, or occasionally at a hotel, but doesn't really need to use it elsewhere (he's got a Palm Treo for all the little things). Desktop replacement is perfect for him, especially since he can use the nice high-res LCD without having to buy one for home and one for the office.
To me that doesn't say you can't compile it under Windows, just that if you do compile on Windows with the commercial version you must still release your software under the GPL license.
The only thing about the Dells is that the colors seem somewhat dull compared to some other displays. The company I work for bought about 50 Dells before we switched to Samsung, and the difference in the image is very noticable, especially if they are side by side. We used the 17", 19" and 20" Dells...
I really miss the stand on the Dell monitors though, it's simply awesome. The built in USB hub is very handy too. We'd probably still be buying them if Dell didn't try to pull a fast one on us regarding pricing ("LCD demand is going up, we have to raise our prices.." "Right, that's why the other manufacturers have dropped theirs recently?")
Nobody deploys Windows with images any more. Not the static type anyway. Usually there's a boot disk that will load the base files on to the machine, and then an automated install will be performed of the system and apps, ensuring the right drives get installed for the hardware.
But anyway, I still think it's a pain in the ass. Having developed some of these images for the company I work for right now, there's just so many quirks in individual app installations, and settings in Windows are set in all sorts of different ways (config files, registry, policy...) , not all apps support automated installation, etc. The whole thing is a huge mess. I'd take Linux any day:)

Probably most of the breasts on the models on those sites...

Getting a whopping 0.2k/sec download here. Has anyone by chance started a torrent for this?
uh.. comes in the same package as parent, but its RPN :)

Great idea! You should patent it :p

Maybe because they aren't? See This comment
Just because the current version doesn't run Linux right now, does not mean future versions will not.

How about BoToX ? Giving the aging ATX standard a facelift :p

I doubt it. But I hear you can get viruses from getting laid...

Just for fun, I tried a large professional organization: www.ieee.pro
