    I've on the other hand never lost something on cloud service. And often that's where I turn first to retrieve "long lost files".

    I once had my online storage go down for over a week. They didn't lose anything, but if I hadn't had local copies, I would have been dead in the water for over a week!

    Until it gets to a point where consumers DEMAND alternatives. Telco's campain money won't means squat if 51% of the public is pissed off enough to vote their pet congresscritters out of office. Even monopolys have limits.

    The two aren't mutally exclusive. Government did encourage this crisis. It also failed to reign in the greedsters who screwed everyone else to make their profits.

    To me, beta means that you can use the software, but don't expect it to be "stable", either for crashes or changing. If a project is in "beta" for 4 years, something is wrong, either with the project or, in the case of gmail, with their definition of "beta".

    In fact I'd put Sears as the only brick and mortar retailer I actually trust today... I'd be perfectly happy buying some no-name appliance from Sears, while I wouldn't even think about touching some no-name appliance in a Wal-Mart.

    I like Sears better than Walmart, but Walmart has one big advantage over Sears, at least in my area.

    It still exists. :(

    Awhile back, there was a process that only ran "on demand". Since it wasn't part of the usual routine there wasn't any formal documentation. I was the only person who had touched it for years, though the guy I inherited it from could have done it in a pinch. One year, I, and the other guy, had both scheduled our vacations at the same time. The boss, one of the few smart ones, insisted that I document the process in case it had to be run while we were gone. Sure enough it was, and thanks to my instructions, the person who ran it didn't have any trouble.

    Well, way back in prehistoric times, when I replaced my olde 8088 with a 286, a couple of my old games ran TOO quickly on the new hardware. So it can be an issue.

    I never heard anyone say that Iraq had NUCLEAR weapons. EVER! They claimed that Iraq was working on nuclear weapons and might have them in 5-10 years, and that they already had chemical weapons. The stated threat was NOT that they could blow up our cities NOW, it was that we had to stop them before they could blow our cities.
