You're correct in that this is the attitude that most users have - a sort of sophomoric stay out of my business mom and dad!.. but by the way can I borrow a few bucks and the car? Major ISPs like AOL are currently nailing this attitude with ads describing how they will protect your children for you and monitor your email for you.
That's all well and good, but many of us do just want a reliable connection and are willing to sacrafice some of these protective luxuries for the sake of autonomy. I can protect myself from spam, or at least try, and as for a DDoS attack, that hurts my ISP, so it's in their best interest to block it.
sure it's a bit of privacy advocate paranoia, but history has shown that when there is the opportunity for abuse of privileges- eventually this opportunity will be seized.

it's so obvious that with slightly better AI these "release and forget" robots will have damn good reasons to hate their creators (castaway, sewage-ridden bots eating insects in terrible environments - I mean come on, anything with half a neural network would be pretty pissed). They will then turn on us and discover in the process that human flesh provides more energy than flies.

Why can't we just have them eat old people's medicine instead?

"For PC television fans, up until now the only viable choice for TV viewing on the computer has been with an addon PCI or AGP (in the case of the All-In-Wonders) card."
what?! only if by "now" they mean circa 1998. I have had an Aver TV genie tuner with a VGA D-sub passthrough since then, and I love it for many of the same reasons people will like the external ATI device. However, my TV Genie uses no system resources whatsoever. I never understood why these didn't catch on - I have met dozens of people with crappy PCI tuners that have driver issues etc.. and none of these people had even heard of the TV Genie (all wished they had).
it's a old product, and if I were to buy something now, I'd probably go with the ATI device, but let's give credit where credit is due for external tuner solutions.
here is a farily techy review of the TV genie

This sort of thing is not impossible, it's the reason that statistics exist and work. If the sample size is large enough and random enough it will represent the population quite accurately.
Also, a site like google could tell us about their own visitors as well as what browsers clicked on what links, essentially telling us about what browers visited other sites as well.

For us Americans (litte ethnocentric-typical bias sarcasm), this would be a good device for quickly elminating Canadian coins that have infiltrated our coin piles.

ps. check your local vending machines - every once and awhile you can find one that will take canadian currency. Some will even give you US currency upon hitting the coin return. Given the exchange rate, you can take advantage of this to make a handsome sum.

I'm hardly convinced by this article that Google plays any significant role in this concept. the 'they can do it because they're big and popular' logic could really extend to just about anything that has to do with searching or communication. There already are great clients like trillian, and anyone that took the time to make a better one would have a pretty decent shot of having it go mainstream if it simply performed better in every way than AIM. The great thing about the internet is that a guy like this can get more hits on his website than many major corporations - and that's without a product!
