  1. Re:4 hours commuting a day... on What's The Perfect Balance For a Budget Laptop? · · Score: 1

There have been a lot of comments to the parent post, some of which ask why would anyone commute 4 hours a day to get to work. Here is one reason why: I live and work outside of Boston and drive to work, which takes me between 30-40 minutes each way, depending on traffic. As an exercise, I checked out the MBTA (mass transit around here) to see if I could take mass transit to work. I could do this, BUT the best I could do is a little over two hours each way (a combination of bus, subway and train). I live less than 20 miles from work, but no direct mass transit routes between home town and work town. Were I to not be able to drive (for whatever reason), I have a fall-back to take mass transit. It would suck, but if I can't find a comparable job in my home town, then I might stick with it.

I work for a small (about 100 person) company with a heterogeneous environment (Linux, OS X, Windows). In the past few years the IT team has settled on Dell for quick turnaround of ordering customized systems and consistency (the devil you know). They order Dell laptops, desktops and servers. It has pretty much turned into a "Dell house." The quick turnaround on customized orders is extremely important to meet developer needs. If Dell makes custom ordering take longer or involves increased hassle, I would bet that our IT management would start looking into other vendors.

Mathematicians and theoretical physicists, in general focus on theory and simulation, and don't have the experience that experimental physicists have with the gritty little differences between theory and practice that make things go awry.

IMHO, ebay's feedback system is broken. Like the problem you have, ignorant buyers don't get in touch with sellers. Sellers hold feedback hostage from buyers until they receive positive feedback. This skews the feedback seen. I've been exclusively a buyer, I have little interest in selling on ebay. I've fallen into the habit of giving feedback to the seller when he/she gives it first. On one hand, I paid the seller quickly with the method the seller wants, I held up my end of the bargain, I should get pos feedback. On the other hand, I know that not all buyers are good buyers, like the real estate adage, "Buyers are liars," The buyer may pull the crap that the parent poster described.

This is by far the easiest cheese to make. Called Queso Blanco in the Spanish speaking (it means "white cheese") world it is used throughout the world by different names. It can be eaten strait or mixed in with various dishes. Try it in your lasagna recipes instead of Ricotta or in addition to it. Yum!

    INGREDIENTS
    .
    1 Gallon Whole Milk
    1/4 Cup White Vinegar**
    .

    1. Heat milk to 180 F (82 C) stirring constantly. Be careful not to burn the milk.
    2. While mixing with a whisk, slowly add the white vinegar. You will notice the milk begins to curdle.
    3. Keep stirring for 10-15 minutes.
    4. Line a colander with a fine cheesecloth.
    5. Pour the curdled milk through the colander.
    6. Allow the curds to cool for about 20 minutes.
    7. Tie the four corners of the cheese cloth together and hang it to drain for about 5 - 7 hours (until it stops dripping).
    8. The solidified cheese can be broken apart and salted to taste or kept unsalted.

** The juice of 3-5 lemons may also be used in substitute or addition to the vinegar. The resulting cheese will have a much more tangy flavor.

This is a common misconception. My step mother was an elementary school teacher and she worked many more hours than that. Think more like 7 am to 5 pm or 6pm. Teacher have to be there before the students and leave after the students. There is homework to grade and lots of meetings, especially during vacation weeks. This is worst for high school teachers who have lots of crappy book reports, essays, and exams to grade. All the meanwhile, trying to bring positive reenforcement in criticism. Not something on my enjoyment list.
