Even our printed press is quite varying look at the New York Times and Washington Post Comapred to the Washington Times. Or the Boston Globe compared to the Boston Herald.

There is alot of politics involved in this decision mainly when we have water bans. Obviously this case hasn't killed the adoption of Linux by many corporations. So I am not worried. Hell, SCOX is starting to plummet regardless of what Crazy Press Releases SCO makes. Do you think Autozone and Chrysler are worried about SCO? Even a large company would have trouble with the plethora of lawsuits SCO is dealing with and there will be more when all is said and done.

I understand that absolutely. Writing a virus from scratch. Creating anything leaves most people with a feeling of accomplishment. But I am not sure if I buy into kiddies doing it bragging rights because if they brag about it they will get caught esp. if there is a reward involved. But after reading your post I had a second thought that may explain why we get all these variations aftera virus is initially released. I beleive some of these Kiddies maybe trying to improve on the original virus. Fix it, make it better. Create a more Perfect Virus. This I understand. I work in a electronics repair shop and I associate a certain amount of pride with being able to fix and improve upon existing designs. So maybe there is a little more to variation virusus.
I always wondered what motivated these people. Is it as simple as recognition? Its not like they can tell anybody it was they who did it. Really it isn't even "neat" on a technical scale. IANAP(I Am Not A Programmer) IAAET(I Am An Electronics Tech) Generally speaking from a non programmer perspective, My company has recently released a new line of instruments using all "new" surface mount PCBs. All of our older lines were pass through.(Pretty easy to repair not more than 50 pins tops) All the bugs and defects were pretty easy to rework on these old boards now with the new and improved surface mount I am starting to see alot of the same problems that were fixed in the old PCBs but not many. As a whole the new instruments are much better faster with a better communication protocol(tcp/ip) versus our old proprietary interface that no one knows anything about becuase it was designed 20 years ago by a guy who doesn't work here anymore but I digress...
My point is that every company/project has to decide if going to the new version(or rewrite) adds enough signicant improvements or performace increases to out weigh the negatives of retracing bug fixes and reworks.
Of course good documentation of code or schematics' updates and reworks could minimize the amount of previously fixed problems.
If they pull this off and actually take a chunk out of MS market share say 15-20% think of all the jobs that would create for slashdot geeks. While MCSE's are rushing to get certified for linux we would already be in the "know" BWAHAHHAHAHA!!! ph34r my 133t3 linux 5k1llz.
As we aproach the physical limit of processors to scale in size I am interested in see what the industry does next. Many people have theoriezed quantum and oraganic (as mentioned before on/.)computers but I would like to see real progress made. But even still that may be the type of technilogical break through that the Wrights made.
I would hope to see some sort of fuel innovations maybe leading to commercial space flights.
For military innovations(a subject near and dear to my heart ) I would hope to see better troop armor something akin to starship troopers(the book not the movie dammit)
But in all seriousness 100years from now I suspect the world will not be much different(we had a good innovation/invention explosion in the early to mid 1900's: flight, automobile, telephone(1876ish?)light bulb(1878 but same time frame) tranisitors in 1940 leading to computers and eventually the internet. But if you examine the past 50 years there really hasn't been anything that interesting going on(with the notable exception of(space flight,and internet) At least nothing on the scale of the Wrights. People used to walk and ride horses then within a 50 year period period they had light bulbs, cars, airplanes and talking on telephones.
If I try to gauge relatively what will the next big leaps and bounds bring us..I would have to say the same thing people were saying in the fifties flying cars and automated homes. But who knows? Semper Fi

Actually, thats my full time job. There are plenty of electronics techs out thier who are slowly or not so slowly losing their jobs. Most electronics are becoming less hardware and more software(thank you software guys you suck):P. So many of us could contribute in some way while we are sitting in the unemployment lines with the rest of IT the way alot of you guys conribute to your favorite open source projects.
Generally the problem using VHF is that its pretty limited to a few miles unless you are pumping some serious Watts with a gigantic antenna. Also I am pretty sure 45MHz is used for Military VHF communications(I believe the band to 30MHz to 87.975 or some such) but I am not sure about Australia and its Military freqs. I seem to remmember we could send "data" over VHF when I was in but it was hardly used(I just don't think anybody knew how) We did a bunch of teletype stuff that was pretty annoying.
Back to the topic we did hve some mobile but high powered VHF stuff but it was pretty much limited to LOS(line of sight) maybe if your lucky 30 or so miles.
HF would be more impresive because you could bounce that sucker half way accross the world but you crazy antenna configs like sloping V's and such. Then you would have to worry about weather, TOD, and the infamous sunspots.
I am always surprised that satalite internet never really took off in that more people could access the same bird regardless of remote thier location and steup is pretty minimal while the range is outstanding.
But really sucks is when you have to carry them...
