You are right (and I'm dead wrong). I just re-read the post I replied to, and perhaps I should have worded differently or simply not accused Jolyon of hypocrisy.

My intention in my post was to state that perhaps I (we) are hypocrites for denying our kids the misdemeanors we commited in our youth.

Of course, *now* we realize that our parents were right in getting angry/punishing us for our misbehaviour. And *now* we realize our kids will get angry at us for trying to protect them by restricting their "freedom".

I don't know who your ISP is so I can't comment much on them. Advertising, for better or worse, is supposed to be taken with a grain of salt. Don't let yourself be misled by it. Read your contract and your TOS. If it says there that the will provide you with 100% bandwith 100% of the time, you have grounds for reclamation.

But in my experience, if you want 100% CIR, you'll need to get a clear channel circuit or somesuch and that is WAY more expensive than your typical DSL line. Shop around.

  22. Domain buying on What to Do When Your ISP Steals Your Domain? · · Score: 1

Nowadays, it's really easy (and cheap) to buy a domain, but a lot of customers prefer to let the ISP/hosting company do this for them. Back in the day when there was a single registrar for .com, .net, etc, and the procedure involved complicated e-mail forms this was understandable. But today, buying a domain is as easy as buying a book on Amazon.

If, however, you insist on having your ISP do this, make sure that you are at least one of the listed contacts and, if the admin is done via a web form, make sure you have the password.

This probably doesn't help your friend, tho. I guess he can send a letterheaded note to the registrar and at least dispute the domain.

To act as devil's advocate: some ISP do hold onto domains whenever the business relationship is not terminated properly (say, the customer didn't give due notice, owes money, etc). I don't know if this is the case of your friend, but it would help to ask the ISP why they think they should hold onto the domain.

    Obligatory Note: IANAL.
