  4. Distributed Computing Server on Rendering Shrek@Home? · · Score: 1, Interesting

Why have one distributing computing CLIENT for gene folding, one extraterrestrial searching and yet another for video rendering?

It might be a good idea to have a distributed computing SERVER (DCS) that can take and serve number crunching tasks to those that request them.

Some good ideas might be the following:
Build a mesh of DCS' by using current P2P technologies so that one DCS can know about a good number of others.
DCS' initially (might) not provide services to every user by default; it is up to the owner to choose who to allow to use CPU power and how much.

After all, the CPU power you don't use goes wasted.

Actually I was wondering if I could use a GPU as a "coprocessor" by:
    1) Using a common PCI card for video output
    2) Building a 'math' library that accesses the GPU through the AGP interface.
    3) Using such library to have some really accelerated math intensive computing/processing.

I'll give this some more tought this summer anyways.

Then we could calculate the effects of the fresnel lens in a few seconds without buying one ;)

As someone who has to face depression every day (from the young age of 12, 1990) I can confirm that having depression is not just being sad. It's more than that.

Having depression (not the same thing as being depressed) is feeling so bad and helpless that in order to cope with such negative feelings one either 'switches off', that is, loses all interest in everything or contemplates suicide.

As a person that went very near to wiping himself out of existence I can say that a suicide attempt is often used as a final attempt at calling for help at people that don't really understand what's wrong with you.

On the other hand actual suicide is the ultimate means of ending all the internal suffering depression causes. And believe me death IS an option for ending depression. Ahough meds are a little less effective than the option just mentioned it's a better option in most cases.

So next time you meet someone with depression take care; you really might need access to his/her data real soon.

    Always.

The use of media is to be seen/heared etc., with this fact in mind let's take music as an example; one can play a 'DRMed' music file, loopback the audio output to the audio input and record. Lo and behold, the resultant recorded music has no DRM protection! A similar setup can be used for video.

Of course the resultant quality depends on the quality of the transducers used. But with most commonly available equipment the quality is very acceptable.
