  1. What is this doing on Slashdot? Is it literally because "Women technologists like Saujani who were tapped to appear on the show-"? I don't not care about issues like this.... It's just stupid that it's on "News for Nerds that Matters." (yes I'm aware more and more often we're getting stuff that doesn't really relate to that.... but FFS) How many people on Slashdot even watch 60 Minutes?

The reason they want comments is to have people comment on the comments and keep coming back over and over to reply and follow videos to continue commenting on past arguments and internet battles. Well, also to pretend that they care about the comments and input of all of their subscribers.

I was wondering how often it made weird images. The first one I opened was really messed up. The left side of the person's face seemed at least half an inch wider.... and also the head on that side was higher up and a different shape. The left jaw looked really unnatural. Then the next 3-4 images seemed fine.... only to be followed by what looked like a 18-20 year old guy with really big white ear hair. And then what looked like a 5 year old's face on a young woman's head.

  9. I'm pretty sure that Opera invented the TAB concept.

TAB is a diet cola soft drink that was produced by The Coca-Cola Company, in 1963!

I really do miss having all the mouse gestures and extra functions by pressing keys on the numberpad and whatnot from older Opera. I always have a ton of tabs open and it was easy to just fly around in whatever I needed to do.

(and more broadly, the coffee that many people consume it in), has all sorts of wide ranging health benefits.

One of the most interesting ones was a Japanese study from a few years ago where it showed that having around 4 cups of coffee a day (since I already saw someone else mention 4 a day earlier) gave older men a resistance to sarcopenia (muscle loss due to aging). I found this incredibly interesting. While I know it would do little for your joints... I'd rather still have strength and ability than not.

Also I started the quote after caffeine because I believe it is more likely that other components of the coffee are largely more responsible for the benefits of coffee, rather than the caffeine itself.

I'm going to assume the preventative effects of coffee are probably more likely due to the phytochemicals in coffee rather than the caffeine alone. Coffee and various tea types are more than just liquid caffeine. Perhaps something in it gives you increased health defenses.... but I doubt it's entirely the doing of the caffeine.

-making $30k. I was shocked by how many of my co-workers at the same salary range lived paycheck-to-paycheck. Their MO seemed to be to deposit their paycheck in their bank account, and pay their monthly bills. After those were covered, they'd use money for impulse buys until the ATM said their bank account was empty,

This always reminds me of when I worked a warehouse job after losing a contract. I figured I could work my way into the office and took the job right away. We were making $12/hr working 40 days a week. There was a group that hit the nearby bar every Friday and kept inviting me. I started going with them and it was pretty eye opening on why they seemed to have such worse money problems. I'd go to the bar and spend maybe $8-12. The others would buy rounds of shots and/or expensive drinks, then leave with a $75+ bill.

Then there was this lady named Jenn who worked 2 jobs. 40 hours with us and around 30 hours 3rd shift with UPS. She never had money. But she had seemingly 1,000 sets of clothing and 100 different make ups to color match to them all. Almost weekly she was having to ask people for $20-30 because she was out of money and gas and couldn't fill her tank and wouldn't be able to get to either of her jobs. Finally we got 2 weeks of overtime and she had some extra money. We told her not to go to the bar, told her not to buy people drinks, etc..... Then she went and bought everyone a round of drinks along with 2 appetizers and also got herself a dessert to take home.

A very big +1 to a financial management course for everyone.

And while it did vary some what the ideal range was and what was bad... generally the ok/good ones ranged from 7-9 hours before it was too little/much. So shaving an hour off of 8 doesn't seem too bad except for a few people. I'm assuming we're probably not worried about the 7 hour crowd.... but the 3-5 hour guys that just slam 200 Red Bulls a day instead.

Then again, some time later I had moved to Charlotte and a big hurricane damaged something in the oil lines from Texas and we basically ran out of gas. Prices were around $4/gallon by the time gas became mostly unfindable (except some station with a $6/gallon price some people claimed existed)

  24. Potatoes are not that bad. McDonalds style french fries are, especially if you top them with ketchup and majonaise

It all comes down to your goals and what you're doing. Also genetics somewhat as well. Some people do great with low carb and ketosis. Some people it's almost dangerous for.

If you want to do endurance sports or focus on fat burning ketosis can be a good thing for you. If you're more of a sprinter, power lifter, or strength based athlete carbs may serve you a bit better as you would do best with quick energy you have immediate access to. Not to mention carbs are one of the easier ways to putting on weight (needed for muscle). Generally ketosis is better for endurance sports and fat burn focus.... with carbs being better suited to strength and explosiveness. Right now I've finished with my recent races and wanted to focus on strength so I'm enjoying eating a bit more reckless.... but I'm also lifting super heavy in the gym.
