Right there with you. A friend of mine finally gave it to my rants and installed linux. He now advocates himself, based somewhat around political motives. For me it's just plain geekiness and usability. The REALLY good news is that we are going to campaign for our union (local5) to switch from windows to linux. You wouldn't believe (well, you might) the FUD floating around that local hall about linux. Next week he'll be giving an informational talk to the union reps (bout linux), and hopefully get the ok to do the switch. This would have been unthinkable a year ago, but now that there are such crackdowns on piracy...For a small union like ours, free is a VERY good price.
Huh? Well so are nearly two million people in the United States. So am I. I take it you have NEVER done anything that was against the law, therefore you have the god-given power to declare anyone that is a felon as exempt from a normal life. I hope you can clarify the suppossed logic behind that statement, cause that's what I get from it, standing alone there, like some sting at felons. Boy, would you feel awkward at the pub with me & my friends. All strong individuals, all working hard in their communities to make positive change. What have YOU done for society lately, besides judge people (after they have already been judged and paid their 'dues' to society)?
Besides that I concur that Mitnick is indeed somewhat of a loser:)
This is a beautiful release. I've had luck with most apps first try. The only issue I've had is trying to run some DV apps. LibXv.so.1 seems to be the problem, but several applications (mplayer and Cinerella to name two) want this library but I'll be damned if I can find out HOW to install it. This could of course be my fault. Otherwise, the DVD version of this distro is a great choice for power users and newbies alike.
"The food is not unhealthy."
You meant to say this!?!
You seriously believe that eating even one big mac, yes even just one big mac, is HEALTHY!?! Where are you getting this health innformation? Please tell us, becuase I like to try and eat helthy and I would love to get a big mac if it's good for me. Or did you mean that it is not UNhealthy? Which is different somehow..?
These are some of my recent favs (in order of what I think is difficulty):
Wicked Cool Shell Scripts by Dave Taylor
Linux in a Nutshell 4TH Edition by Ellen Siever
How Linux Works by Brian Ward (Two thumbs up here)
Unix Shell Programming, Third Edition by Stephen Kochan
Beginning Linux Prog 3RD Edition by Neil Matthew
Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment by W Richard Stevens (This isn't really too 'advanced'. I don't program, but this book gave me a great overview of the unix system and gives some sweet, usable examples that I think stand the test of time). Know a little c first, however. I'll stop now.
"...installing Windows XP only takes me 30 minutes and everything works..." EVERYTHING? You mean all of notepad and sound recorder and the other three apps that come packaged with XP?
On a serious note, I haven't had a linux install take me countless hours in years. That's not to say there is no post-install tweaking to be performed, but even windows needs that after an install (new latest-and-greatest drivers, codecs, etc). I just installed the latest Suse and had no serious problems. In fact, I was quite surprised to see a little network icon on the desktop with my workgroup autodetected. Pretty sweet. Also pulled up my USB thumdrive, and digital camera without a hitch. I've been using linux for eight years or so, and I think this is the first time I've had every bit of my hardware show up with zero probs, even an external usb hd...
...is about twenty years overdue for revolution. From the article: "to help the nation avoid strategic surprise... events critical to national security... such as those of Sept. 11, 2001,"
This kind of reasoning to destroy rights is sick. What does that mean, "such as those"? Where are all these 'terrorists' (sick of THAT word) who wait to waylay me and bugger me bloody? Ooooh, that's right! The New & Imroved ARDA is protecting me from them. Thanks for that.
BTW. Not believing privacy is my right MEANS NOTHING TO ME. I'll still claim I have that right, and fight for every inch of it.
Not sure if this was the exact quote. "Those who would give up liberty for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety, and will lose both." --Benjamin Franklin
Go ahead and give up "some personal freedom". Then give up a little more. Maybe a little more to be free from all these terrorists! Quick! Code Orange! Well, I won't give up shit. Not for what you are trying to call survival.
Actually, many people DO have this attitude. Haven't you seen the Hummer hype yet? Or the war on 'terror'? All these things are the fantasies of the rich, coming true at cost not only to humanity, but the world itself.
"Lord Of The Flies is a book that illustrates how easy it is for us to fall into anarchy without the presence of a society to keep us in check." First of all, you point towards a definition of anarchy that is completely false. Secondly, you say: "The book isn't about failing systems of government, it's about how, in the absence of any form of government, we quickly we fall back to a selfish "survival of the fittest" state with the strong preying on the weak..." I'm having a hrd time seeing how this is different that ANY system that exists today.
"...so they can be put away longer..." Longer? What is it about the prison industrial complex that makes people feel so much safer? You think they are going to get out after three years (or more if you had your way) and be upstanding citizens? Or do you just want to put off any future violence they might commit for a few more years by keeping them locked up? Blindly supporting such a blatently abused system gives me the creeps. You might research the prison industry a little more before calling for more time, more time, more time! Long lock-ups are NOT going to solve the problems these kids have. We cannot simply brush these peple under the rug when the origins of there violence is an issue deeply rooted in this culture. They need to be held accountable for there actions, yes, so let's come up with some solutions rather than giving them the education of a felon.

I, for one, welcome our new Big Mouth Billy Bass Videoconferencing overlords!
That may be YOUR 'real world'. Some folks, however, remain true to their ideals and eagerly await a free (as in beer) app.
Obligatory 911 "He's a terrorist!" post.

Damn the man!
Agreed and thanks for speaking up. Portland needs MLB like Vera needs the Gae Bolga:)
Nicely said. You must be an 'Evil One' (tm) to talk like that:|
Er, methinks you mean fascists.
