My point was that the benefits don't necessarily scale with the cost (the fact that most of our developers have licenses to some expensive CASE tools and still prefer to work in emacs, notepad, and slickedit really negates the integrates-with-all-expensive-editors features of those CASE tools).
we have the same problem over here!:(( we recently bought lots of WSAD licenses, it is a great software that integrates all our J2EE developing needs... but it is so damn slow (all the computers had to be upgraded to 1gb ram) that most of us prefer our old notepad/ant combination... I guess the developers did a great job integrating the whole developing scenario but they kinda forgot to ask us, developers, if everthing was ok... the software end up being more an annoying than an productivity boost...:(((
I worked many many years developing free source softs with CVS and it never failed me... I kinda miss its simple/objective approach, however not many large "traditional" companies are ready to use open source software (like cvs), they believe that because it is free it is lame, I myself like ClearCase not because its expensive or because its built by a famous company but because it meets our needs here on development (I also group version control under software engineering) when SourceSafe, for example, didnt...:)))
ok...:)) i really misunderstood the 6 months stuff but depending on the project hes starting to manage ClearCase CAN be a help!!! Of course CVS is much cheaper, thats an option too but you gotta have some linux servers (winnt cvs server just sucks)...
here in the company i work for we all use WebSphere Advanced App Developer (also called WSAD) and it integrates very well with both CVS and ClearCase, the last has some good features CVS stills lacks...:(( but it also sucks on some parts...
I agree on some points!!! ClearCase is a pain in the ass in some ocassions, when we first implemented it became more of an issue!!:))) Now that we all got used to it actully help us doing what we need to do.
I agree that it is a expensive solution, but it is damn powerfull... we use many IBM software here that has good clearcase integration... we can do the same with CVS but I dont think its suitable to us...:(((
I sent this story to slashdot some days ago, it was rejected. It seens that this company is releasing a modchip, to prove that (many people told it was a fake) they released videos and photos on their site:
Maybe many of you never heard about this wonderfull console, I got some links here on my bookmarks so you all can have a look at it (and play it on emulators):
Buran flew only once in orbital flight but many suborbital were done. That orbital flight (unmanned) was so impressive its autopilot could land it under 35mph crosswind within only 3 feet from the runway centerline. Only 3 heat shield cells were lost on reentry when its american counterpart loses more than 3% of total each reentry...
its a pretty impressive machine but, unfortunately, they had to focus their attention on other things as this was no priority...
Why dont NASA buy that russian space shuttle that was for sale as we saw this week here on slashdot?:)) For 6 millions that is a bargain and it is much better than NASA space shuttle...
the idea is great... the only problem is that it would need to be implemented 10 years ago, when companies and persons were starting to use windows.
here in brazil MS never said we need to use licensed windows copies. In fact, we never had windows on EVERY store till some years ago, it was hard to buy a copy of windows. What we did then? Piracy! Every small company and home computer had a pirated copy of windows. Then, when everbody had windows MS spent MILLIONS (yes, millions) with our government so every person/company who had a pirated copy would need to pay thousands of dollars and even go to jail if that soft was no properly licensed. Ok, you have a week to solve that problem, are you going to stop your small company and install Linux for example, spend hours and hours training every user, or just buy the damn licensed copy (and spend much more money) and go on with your life?
dude, MS is not the best soft company out there but it sure has some great minds working on redmont marketing department buildings...
Public education is a social institution, not a business. Traditional business rules do not apply to public education, hence M$ business tactics have backfired on them.
dude, remember were talking about MS and capitalism, that means it doesnt really matter who you are, what you do, what you want, just how much you can pay...
and dont forget that students are future workers and maybe even managers that will want Linux in their business if their exposed to that most of their time in school.
Anybody curious about the absence of Apple Computers, who once had a stronghold in education?
I think Apple is trying to gain some market share with eMac... I dont use a Mac but I think its very good idea...
This is and old and known MS business strategy. They let their softs spread freely and then demand license regularization. Companies around the world used to have no alternative but to pay thousands of dollars on licenses because mass migration is expensive, user training on new OS is expensive and many other things. Even thou some years ago linux already existed it was not a so viable alternative, so companies, even knowing Windows is not the best OS out there, stick to it.
It is pretty good to see that this is changing. Microsoft tried to do this but now there is an alternative out there and that alternative is pretty strong and robust. It is good to see that even thou MS is a large company it cant do business like it did years ago because it is not the ONLY out there.
People that want to buy this may find this information usefull.
The Buran ("Snow Storm" in Russian) Space Shuttle Program began back in 1976, construction began on 1980. It is stated that the Buran is much more powerfull than its rival, the american Space Shuttle, it caries more cargo, it has more space, and it goes way farther. The flight test was done in 1988, November 15th if Im not wrong, the flight was unmanned but was impressive, it was able to land the Buran under 35mph crosswind within only 3 feet from the runway centerline. Its heatshields are much more efficiently posicioned and built from materials far more efficient.
Ok people. Its more than known that refilling those expensive cartdridges are no good for our beloved printers. They are not made on the same materials so they MAY end up damaging the printhead.
Those cartrigdes that monitor ink quantity are a smart move. Id do the same if I was Epson (for example)... because many people end up damaging their printers, calling Epson and getting new ones. Epson and many other companies loses lots and lots of money with that. And there is no way epson can prove the user is wrong (what if he trown the cartridge away)... unfortunately those measures comes only to prevent abuse from some people...
It is not possible on older graphics cards like RAGE 128 cards, said Jobs
altouth that sucks for Rage 128 onwers, just imagine how faster X will be. All that transparency, shadows, etc, being drawed by hardware would be MUCH faster (and will leave us lots of memory free for running multiple apps)...
well, if it helps a friend of mine has a room in his home with a 3M projector on a 180" display and a 5.1 sound system with a athlon 2200 with wireless keyboard and mouse:))
I dont think they would have any benefit doing that...
"all your costumer are belong to us"
:)) hahahhahaha
sorry people... sorry...

ill download the video again and then have a closer look at it...
after all it is much easier to fake a xbox video than a, for instance, gamecube one since the xbox is build on the common PC plataform...
Rational has some interesting software you can use (like ClearCase)...

urged employees to 'work underground' to hurt companies...
they did a good job, they built WINDOWS XP!!!
fyi, emulation is not piracy when youre using LEGAL ROMS...
Maybe many of you never heard about this wonderfull console, I got some links here on my bookmarks so you all can have a look at it (and play it on emulators):
Neo Geo Temple
Some Roms
Emulation
well, not quite that...

dude, even without seeing the code MS copies MacOS all the ways possible, just wonder if they actually see the code
Catastrophe Hedging Program 2.5
now tell me this thing runs on a Unix and Ill be happy for the rest of my day...
(i dont think MS is stupid enough to let their money be managed by a Win32 software)
now thats how Neo was able to dodge bullets, the matrix is slashdotted so everthing is running at about half the speed it should be... ;)))
In other news: "Mozilla piracy has grown 12% last year according to MS sources. Also, GIMP piracy has also grown considerably."
Come on MS... come on... grow up!
