    Is that the look that comes right before he says 'You're Fired!'? Sounds like your PHB is the kind to shift the blame off to the people below him.

    That quote from the post reminded me of the first time I really used Unix in a class and the teacher kept talking about these 'man pages' that I couldn't find anywhere in the book for the class. :)

    I used to fall in the #2 category but I've become so accustomed to the shortcuts in vi and all the handy commands like find and grep that I miss those things when working in Windows. I would guess that happens with a lot of people that use Unix for a while.

    I'm not so sure about that. If one day my cat started talking to me and then went out to get a job so I could lay around the house eating his food, I don't think I'd be too mad at him. :)

    I realize these numbers are just made up but let me point out that $10/month for 2 years is $240 which is a bit more than the $200 lump sum every two years.

    I mention this because it's a pretty safe bet that any company moving to a subscription model can also do basic math to figure this out. They're not going to move to a new model that means less profit if they don't need to.

    Me too. In fact I bought my first one last week.

    I can think of plenty of other people that don't have a DVD drive either.

    Granted, that's not going to stop me from backing stuff up to DVD. If my computer blew up, I think I could scrounge up the money to buy another DVD drive.

    You're right! That's what I was trying to tell the goons at the airport the other day. I was all like 'Dude, I'm flying down to visit my buddy and I'm taking this gun on the plane with me coz we're going hunting.' But he got pissed and had me arrested.

    Are they really that hard to come by? I think my brother has 1 or 2 that he was trying to decide what to do with.
    I thought about taking 1 but decided it would probably just add to the collection of junk in my closets/basement that I had when I was a kid.

    I have. I was crossing a street at a 4way stop and some lady must have been off in la la land because she hit me.

    It wasn't really that bad. She was accelarting from a complete stop and just barely hit my foot but it knocked it into my other leg causing me to fall down.

    From my personal experience though (jog at lunch and ride my bike to/from work), I'd still agree that jogging is safer.

    It's not a console game but in Battlefield 1942, you can turn on the larger map so it takes up about 1/3 to 1/2 the screen and set the transparency of the map to whatever you like so you can view it all the time while you're playing.

    What's that have to do with cardiovascular fitness? Just because your arms get tired doesn't mean your heart gets any more of a work out.
    I think the parent's point was that while this may make your arms stronger, it's not going to have much impact on your health. Probably won't burn up a whole lot of calories either if the goal is to lose weight.

    That reminds me of when we we're setting up our time clock system.

    One of the HR people actually wanted to set up grace/rounding rules so that if an employee clocked in at 8:01 and then clocked out at 11:05, they would only be paid for 2hrs 59min.

    Fourtunately for our employees, we talked them out of that.

    There may be some instances where they need it (i.e. if you get a job on campus) but otherwise they must have some other way of generating an ID for you. Foreign students tend not to have SSNs.

    Incidentally, my college used to do that (use your SSN as your Student ID by default). We recently converted to generated numbers. I think more colleges are making this switch as well.

    I can't think of anything worse than having a doctor that doesn't enjoy what they do.
    My experience has been that programmers who do it for the money alone tend to try to get by with as little programming as possible. Now apply that mentality to a doctor.

    In all honesty, how is this any different than most professional sports? You sit on your butt and watch other people play a game. Why does it matter if they're playing football or if they're playing Quake?

    Surely it would be more exciting than watching some things like golf or tennis (the real life equivalient of pong).

    Personally, I don't see the point in watching sports either but that's just me.

    I didn't even know this myth existed. I thought it was far more common for people's feedback to be more along the lines of 'hey, why don't you have this feature in your software yet?' instead of 'hey, nice project you've got there but I thought it would be handy if it did this... oh and here's the code I added to accomplish that.'

    I think a better term would be dream rather than myth.

    Sounds like you have low standards for what 'cluey' means. You should invite him over to watch Star Trek IV some time. I'd like to know how long it takes you to explain the joke where Scotty tries talking to the mouse.
