In that case let me put my old Palm III in the microwave for 10 minutes and see wht happens - take some pictures and post it on slashdot - maybe it will get posted and my dot mac page will get a gazzilion hits and then my boss will think i'm cool because lots of people come to my page to learn the facts about microwaves and Palm III's. But the fact remains if I want to look for "fish" I don;t want to a site like Yahoo that has hella ads and flashing images and links ALL OVER THE PAGE. I just want to bring up a page that has a field where I type in what I want and THEN get a page full of ACCURATE links.

I think if google was going to start losing money they could very easily add on a "google-groups" feature and "google - email" and keep a significant amount of people.

  14. Not to be a bugga boo but.... on MPEG 4, Windows Media 9 At War · · Score: 2

    from the license article

"By adding a license for the audio and video compression software, or codecs, of Windows Media 9, Microsoft is extending the technology beyond its Windows operating system, where the software is available for free. Microsoft hopes that cell phone makers or Web publishers running Linux operating systems, for example, will be more willing to license Microsoft's proprietary media technology, since they will no longer be required to also adopt the Windows operating system."

It seems that what is happening is that MS got a license to provide Media Player (along with the WMA format) on any platform (that includes Linux) so that more (non-windows) users can use the WMA and AVI (or whatever their new video format is) format on their system.

I'm gonna go out on a slashdot limb here and say - thats NOT A BAD THING. Sorry but I have both MP3's and WMA's and OGG's and I can't tell the difference with my speakers (not the best, but better than most) and as far as well as MOVs, AVI's, MPG, etc... all play just as well on my monitor.

Whatever the case - MS allowing even those die-hard Linux or Mac users to play WMA's or whatever with media player IS choice and doesn't seem to me that they are doing anything that deserves a slashdot beeting.

Also the article linked on the slashdot story really only covers the fee issue, but ALL codec companies charge for their codecs - either from shareware or outright purchases. Of course most of these are warezable and most people won't buy it as well as the fact that most of the software requiring these codecs will include the codec for free (ie: vcd movies usually include some type of codec software on the cd as well as DVD's do this too)

Sorry this is a bunk story and isn't worth depating IMHO

The Adobe certifications are decent, but they don't really look at design concepts, instead they are more of if you can find where the filter menu is and if you know how to USE the program.

USING a program and DESIGNING art is VERY DIFFERENT and it takes quite a bit more to come up with an original marketing idea for a product than just knowing how to take a picture and run filters in photoshop on it.

Heres a hint for all you wanna be graphic designers - this is what steps I take to create a package

    1) Research who I am marketing too or who "they" want me to market too as well as who I am doing this for is important - just because a nude car wash will sell doesn't mean the church your working for will like that idea :)

    2) Freehand draw out ideas and slogans (i feel my drawings are shitty compared to some but even still it gives a base to start from)

    3) Then I go to the computer and start recreating or scanning - tracing - coloring - touchup etc...

    4) I take it to my boss and he puts in his $5 worth - then I go back to step 3 and after that i'm done with that project.

GOOD Design takes time - not a few seconds filling out a word template.
