I don't think so. It would be a great idea, but so would the Matrix being real.... and we are just no where near that in technology. I've tried both HAL and HAL with ALICE and they suck. The conversations are not at all intelligent - unless you consider having a conversation with a 3 year old intelligent. I've even downloaded plugins for HAL that was supposed to make it smarter, as well as I took advantage of it's "learn from text" and had it "read" a text version of "The Network Encyclopedia" which afterwards I asked it "What is a toekn ring" and it replied by opening up "google" and doing a search for token ring - lame laME LAME!
That would be the LAST thing on my list of what needs to be done/rebuilt in Iraq. Lets start by 1) Start taking care of the refugees and rebuilding new housing 2) Organizing the new government and placing leaders in areas 3) Creating a defense system for the new government so a new dictator doesn't just come back 4) Figure out who runs the Oil - Once all these are done then we can worry about luxuries like the internet, television, etc...
We (Mr. MIT) don't like how you (Mr. RIAA) didn't respond to our phone calls about this matter before sueing one of our students and dragging our colleges name through the mud. Unfortunately we can do nothing to stop you, so thanks ass holes.
So soon I can choose between searching from a text based site or searching from a gazillian image pop-up based site with redirecting links to "larger penis size" or "bigger breastess"
So this crappy company who has nothing better to do than try and make mediocre products that use similar Microsoft names to boost their media HYPE makes another piece of crap.
From the article: "...over time I found it lacking in several areas that were crucial...The poor VIA C3 933MHz CPU isn't even in the same league as those found in the Windows machine...the sound quality was ok but certainly wasn't something to brag about...DVD playback is spotty, VCD is as well. The 3D side of the machine falls woefully short with the Trident offering...I come to the conclusion that it was not a good one."
So what next? Oh I got it Lindows will make a P2P file sharing program called Lindows Lapster and in a few minutes every news site will have an article posted about how "daring and inovative and whatever they are tryign to be" when all they are doing is building hype around crapy products - kind of like infomercials.
Thats a good point. I think Google is great, but other than being a "search" company and having "news" they don't do anything like say... Yahoo who has all kinds of things like free email, groups, chat, web hosting, etc... all things that can keep a larger group of people coming and paying you more.
Although if Google started offering services like Yahoo, but would stay true to the "google way" I think I'd be down to try a Google Chat Client or a Google Group.
From the screen shot on the Central page it looks like a Macromedia version of Sun's Java Webstart - only instead of loading Java apps it loads Flash apps.
I guess I will just have to try their demo when it come sout to really know why or if I would want to use this.
Honestly people who are serious about graphic design, movie editing, and or modeling use BOTH macs and PC's PERIOD.
When it comes to my client wanting me to either A) work on a specific platform so when I give them my files they know it will run on there machines fine or B) Needing an APP that only runs on one particular platform - Argueing over which is faster doesn't matter, it comes down to the FACT that as a graphic designer I NEED to have both my Apple Dual 500 AND my P4 1.6ghz Windows XP machines.
Having one or the other ONLY in these fields WILL limit you.
Normally I would say this is a stupid idea, but my boss would love this and use it...
He has about a 2 hour each way commute to work and currently has a webcam set up at his home to watch his wife and kids while at the office. This way he can see his child grow up and communicate via IM also...
"This may be an initial glimpse at how Microsoft could introduce Digital Restrictions Management by ensuring all retail hardware and software products are approved by Redmond."
Maybe, but in all honesty this is somewhat of a GOOD thing for XP users... From the article:
"Only products that conform to Microsoft's Designed for Windows XP rules and carry its logo will be sold in Office Depot" (SINCE) "Many (products), indeed, when they're installed, carry notices to ignore the "driver is not signed" messages that come up when people use Windows XP."
This is a good thing because now it will force the manufacturers of various hardware to write drivers that will actualy work on XP - there is a lot of hardware (ie: Printers and Scanners) out right now that unless they are "new" will sometimes only have half of there features working under XP. For example my friend bought an HP Printer/Scanner/Fax - under 98 it works fine BUT when you install it under XP the fax won't work - its an issue with the driver software and they are working on a fix for it still....If my friend had gone to Office Depot and bought a printer/scanner/fax machine he would't of had this problem...
Although I wonder - how long does it take to get them on the list of people to spam? Example: If a spammer posts his ads up on monday and then decides to change his phone number the following monday will he still be able to be bothered BEFORE he can change it?
"and that pay increases are actually at reasonable levels"
- Speaking as a Graphic Designer who has never been layed off (so far). I have worked at my current company for 2.5 years. Last year we didn't get pay increases - this year we got a raise - 2% flat to everyone... which made my salary go from 40k/yr to 40,800/yr...um so an $800 raise is considered "reasonable?"
Yeah beggers can't be choosers, but things still suck and the tech industry (at least in San Jose) is getting shit on pretty heavily still with Fujistu laying off people every quarter almost and Applied Materials saying they'll cut another 2k jobs... That doesn't sound like "IT sector jobs are not as glum as we make them out to be"
Actually I am a big fan of apple in general (I am a graphic designer) but I like the Power Macs - you know those big grey boxes that you can actually upgrade extensively and actually rival window pc enthusiasts.
When the imacs came out I thought they were terribly useless - the monitor screen was too small (I like 19" minimum - altho I use a cinema screen 22" now) Also I didn't like the fact that I didn;t come across any imacs that had dual cpu's which was what I needed for my work. All in all i'm glad these cheep pieces of crap have gone away, let apple stick to making real computer i'd say...but then again they have the wonderful lamp light taking its place...
I guess they are just trying to be "hip" and get all the noobs using crap computers instead of focusing on making fast, powerful, and solid machines....
Just curious, is Slashdot ever going to have (like on some registration sites) a side bar that shows how many "guests" , "Users" and "subscribers" are oline? I think it would be interesting to see the numbers. In my opinion if I saw a lot of subscribers it would trick me into subscribing - and yes I do give in to peer pressure easily:)
1st thing that bugs me is that on their specs sheet it says 933Mhz Via C3 - that look slike an AMD cpu if I am not mistaken, which to me is a let down because I (unlike the majority of noise maker son slashdot) choose to use Intel cpus....
2nd thing that bugs me is Lindows Itself which I don't find at all appealing in anyway - why not just use RedHat Linux, Install KDE, and then use Wine?
NOW that this has happened I am even more so uninterested and wishing this company would just go away....
It seems like IBM is really half-assing their recent products/services. Within the last 12 months I've seen them take a lot of flak for their flaky batteries, and bad hardrives
I know their stance for linux has improved, but still seems somewhat wisshy washy at times....IBM IMO is a really strong business, but they seem to be half-assing a lot lately
Get your GED for highschool as soon as you can because highschool is worthless. o to community college and get your AA - transfer to state and work towards your BA.
Invest your savings in Ebay and Redhat not a car, then sell your stock January of 1998 and rebuy it January of 2003.
instead of having a black Palm Pilot with an IBM logo on it and calling it a "Workpad"- they are going to have a black Zaurus with an IBM logo on it and call it the Z-Pad?
or are they just going to put the Qtopia on the palm pilot?
Symantec is a software corporation that runs OODLES (that means a lot) of "Computer PROTECTION" . Now weather or not you beleive they are the best OR worst is your opinion, but from a marketing standpoint it wouldn't be a good idea if they said they had their hands up their asses when the worm came out, now would it?
Bad Example of Conversation: "Hay whats your opinion on X new virus/trojan/worm/etc..." - News People
"Yeah we got hit really bad, we were totally useless for about 2 to 3 hours" - Symantec
Good Conversation: "Hay whats your opinion on X new virus/trojan/worm/etc..." - News People
"Yeah we saw this coming, but unfortunately could only reach a few of our customers in time." - Symantec
I'm glad to finally see a big dog enter the fight. Don't get me wrong, the EFF and Slashdot community are great, but they have a tendancy to allow their bark to be louder than their bite.... So having the IEEE peeps start in on this is definately a good thing.
I'm tired of hearing all this hype and fud about AMD cpu's being great for games - thats BS
My system is a P4 1.6ghz (pre-northwood) with 768mb PC133 SDRAM, and a gforce 2 mx400 64mb
My Friend has the AMD 1800+ with 768mb PC 133 SDRAM, and a gfroce 2 mx400 64mb
In short we have the exact same systems except for the cpu/motherboard (although both MBs are Soyo's) and yes we planned it that way because we network alot and its nice to have the same equipment if problems come up.
Anyway no matter what game we play eg: CS, Diablo 2, NWN, Sims Online, Quake 3, Dungeon Siege, etc.... my system gets significantly better performance. Significantly = Same frame rates even tho i'm playing at 1280x1024 on a 19" monitor and he is playing at 1024x768 on a 17" monitor.
Yes his system was cheeper (slightly) but being the impatient "gamer" that I am who also uses his machine to work on - I don't trade performance for price.
I just bought some crap toy and wrote a review on it - It's so cheesy it's cool yo! Thanks to Michael I just got /.ed - damn i'm 1337!

hmmm... difficult choice...
I think this would be a terrible idea, look at what I would have to listen too:
BMW - 1,000 Free hours of Kraftwork
Honda - 1,000 Free hours of SES
Cadillac - 1,000 Free hours of Elvis
NO NO NO....
So this crappy company who has nothing better to do than try and make mediocre products that use similar Microsoft names to boost their media HYPE makes another piece of crap.

on what exactly this product does...
