I've said it several times before, and I'll say it again: dealing with Chinese vendors sucks. You never know if the code is original or not.
At this point, when I run into Chinese code when working with whatever client, I assume it's been copied from somewhere. Often I recognise it as such (Busybox, various http servers, etc.) When confronted, they either deny it, or simply wonder what the problem is - it's "freeware", after all, particularly after stripping off that pesky GPL at the top of each file.
I don't disagree that the forest industry is necessary, but to claim that a replanted forest has anything even close to resembling the wildlife and diversity of an old-growth forest is plain idiotic.
Always funny to see how knee-jerk people are about Israel, yet how silent/uncaring they are when it comes to similar, and mostly much bloodier, situations - the Algerian government's actions in Darfur, the Chinese in Tibet, Rwanda back in the '90s, etc.
The US had no part in the Somali Civil War, which started in 1991 and marked the end of a functioning government. The US was a part of the United Task Force which entered the country in 1992 to try to prevent famine, but they left in 1993, to be replaced by UN troops.
Somalia became a failed state all on its own, I'm afraid. In fact, the US has been criticised for not doing enough.
Actually, it's because functional programming is hard and not typically taught well in school. People learn imperative languages first, and tend to end up thinking that way. Lots of functional languages such as O'Caml compile to very fast runtimes.
I order from Amazon.com all the time, and I've never dealt with taxes and brokerage. There's shipping and handling and duty, and that's it. Items usually arrive within a week. I think you are making this up.
Well, you'd better get your ass to Mar-I mean Google, and let them know about your cutting-edge business analysis. What fools! If only they had your insight, forged in the fires of massive business success.
I use my Mac every day so I can work with Windows networks, Linux servers, and lots of code. And guess what? No problems at all. So my anecdotal evidence beats yours, I guess.
Holy shit, a post from someone with actual historical perspective. Well done. So many people think today's international problems are somehow new, like the world was just invented yesterday. There is nothing new under the sun.
I wasn't suggesting he should move. I was just asking why he didn't. Lots of people leave their home countries if they find them unpleasant. They are often known as "refugees"; you may have heard the term once or twice.
I know, I broke out laughing when I saw this story. I've worked with a few Chinese offshore dev outfits who quite casually use GPL code on a regular basis - they just download it, strip out the license text, and change a few things around. When I remark on the copyright violation thing, their responses range from indifference to indignation.
IP has zero value in China. So this case is pretty rich - I'll bet MS is shaking its collective head right about now.
I don't think by "games" he meant all games. He just meant some games made for the appropriate console, including a bunch of very high-quality ones. It's nice that your $299 media centre also kicks ass at video games.
The PS3 just rocks. Best mid-range purchase I've made in years. Guess I'll fire up Modern Warfare 2 now.

Signed, a former forestry worker
That's because you see bad movies. There are many good ones released each year. Hope that helps.

I wonder why this is?
You clearly don't know the Newfies, then.
Real developers have trouble getting even small numbers of apps approved
No, they don't. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks though.
You missed out. Dead Space was a really fun game. Can't wait for the sequel.
Yes, Darth Vader has been able to slip undetected into numerous Western democracies for this very reason.
Ah yes, the purchase of Lala will not, therefore, make Apple present throughout the universe.
It's also roughly five times slower, based on what I've read. A non-starter for serious applications.
Very true. Desktop Linux is a bit player when compared to the overall use of Linux, and it's truly a hobbyist's domain.

When was this, and who is this "we" you're referring to?
At the very least, the userland api to the system services has been considered a part of the OS since day 1.
Also, microkernels don't include such things as device drivers and protocol stacks, which run in userland. Are they not part of the OS?
The angry anti-Mac people are a funny bunch.

If I need to run a variety of Windows-only desktop apps, as most people who use Windows do, then Linux is worthless to me at any price.

If you believe you live in a police state, then why don't you move to a place that you feel isn't a police state? Or is there such a place?

Does the Cylon attack come before or after 2012?
