his family will be able to control Star Wars indefinitely. So you can forget about a Star Wars film ever being made by anyone with talent.
You condemn his children as talentless, without giving them a chance?? Nice. Anyways, who's to say they won't release the rights to make a movie to someone else, as Christopher Tolkien did?
And, I'm sorry, but if Anakin were to fall into the lava... instant crispy Jedi.
So, Complain about the physics of lava, but not lightsabers, laser pistols, moon sized space stations, hyperspace, speeder bikes or Jedi super-powers?
Heck, what are the odds of so many sentient species, living in the same galaxy, at the same time?! If you want to complain about the science of Star Wars, start there!
This is fiction, moreover, it's Hollywood Fiction. It doesn't need to be scientifically accurate, it needs to be consistent though.
Lucas would actually bother to try to keep the timeline consistent
Just who's fiction and timeline is this? His story, his timeline. I remember reading in a sci fi magazine (forget the name as I was young, but there was a review of the Black Hole in it too.) in the early 80 that it was Lava. This from Lucas' mouth IIRC. If this is the case, it's lava, no fanfic or independant author can change that.
I would have agreed with you the first two seasons. But I got the impression that they revamped it for season 3 just to piss of the few who actually thought the theme was good initially! Can we expect some swing for season 4, or maybe a salsa!
the Microsoft employees behind the design of Windows Registry
Ah yes, brought to you by the letter V, as in VMS. IIRC it was a few digital VMS engineers that left and help build many of the more functional components of WinNT. And apart from the ACL, i believe the registry (at least for pathworks) was another digital innovation...
Never forget there is very little you can credit Microsoft with...
"The robots would take on the painstaking, time consuming, and sometimes dangerous, task of collecting water samples which is currently being done by carbon based lifeforms."
I'm sure these carbon based lifeforms are happy they are having their jobs outsourced to robots next year. Why make it sound like we are doing these divers a favor by taking away their work?
I find this quote from the Mother Earth News article interesting:
"experts predict the world will run out of refineable oil within (are you ready for this? } 30 years."
This was 33 years ago.... are we anywhere near running out of refinable oil? Not to say we aren't depleeting what we have, at a rediculous rate, nor that it's not a critical problem. But I tend to question "expert" statements precisely because of examples like this.
Oh, right, they're not all white American christians and therefore don't count.
The poster never insinuated any of that. You could have left it with your well taken point regarding Africa, rather than making his comment look like bigotry. It appears that you're the prejudiced one. Good work.
Ears have nothing to do with it. The position of what is making the sound does.
For watching a movie, something people usually do (at home, anyway) in small groups, you want good sound quality for a wide area of the room. At least the width of a typical sofa, and the depth of the sofa plus a couple of kids sitting in front of it. Thus, you have 5.1 channel, allowing more than a single person to experience decent sound.
That's about as wrong as wrong can be. 5.1 has nothing to do with making it sound better in any part of the room. It has everything to do with recreating an accurate soundstage, based on the application. Actually in some applications, 5.1 makes things sound worse, since your proximity to the speakers changes your perception of the soundstage, which is usually optimized for a certain position in the room (Regarless of how many people occupy that space.)
Multichannel sound is about creating a believable soundstage. Think about a live concert...You generally face the stage (or the sky if you've had a little too much of $substance.) Any sound behind you is largely irrelevant, or reproducable from sound in front of you. You are a the concert for the music, not the audience behind you. Stereo works exceedingly well for reproducing this kind of setup. There is very little usefull information that can be discreetly encoded in a 5.1 live performance that you cannot do with effects, since the band itself is never behind you spacially.
A movie on the other hand : you have the illusion of being in the middle of the movie, especially with a well mastered soundtrack. You expect to hear things happen behind you, or beside you. 5 (or more) channels creates this illusion beautifully. The rears rarely play what the mains are at the same time.
The island in the Mediterranean (and, btw, Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean) that an earlier poster referred to is the modern island of Santorini.
From Critias, one of the two dialogues from Plato : "...which, as was saying, was an island greater in extent than Libya and Asia, and when afterwards sunk by an earthquake, became an impassable barrier of mud to voyagers sailing from hence to any part of the ocean."
Santorini is nowhere even *remotely* as large as Libya and Asia. And how exactly did the volcano make "...and impassable barrier of mud to voyagers sailing from hence to any part of the ocean?
Japanese games cater to a older, more mature, intelligent (but creepier) audience.
Such as Super (Mario|Luigi|Yoshi) (32|64|3D|4D), Pokemon $version and it's ilk? When someone says Japanese games, these are the titles that come to my mind immediately. It's an unfair bias for sure. But I think you over generalise. When I think US games, I think Origin Systems. I think Doom - Quake 1,2,3. I think Freespace 1 and 2.
American games do sometimes try to give their games sex appeal, but it's done in a really crude manner... see BMX XXX, or Lara Croft, who is simply frumpy compared to hundreds of virtually anonymous chicks in Japanese fighting games, RPGs, ect, ect.
America has not taken over the entire free world outside of Japan. Lara Croft is not American. Europe, the UK and Canada pump out tons of great content. Anyways, I'll see your BMX XXX and raise you one DOA Beach Volleyball. Who's the more crude... I can't think of an adult targeted title from Japan that didn't spend silly amounts of time calculating proper breast bounce (with varying degrees of success) even when it's utterly irrelevant to the game. I shudder to think how Beyond Good and Evil would have turned out if it had come out of a Japanese dev house. And Jade is a helluva lot more sexy than any of the japanese cookie cutter chest-heavy fighter/rpg/driving game rakes you mention.
Good lord, I misread that Macrovision. The last people on earth I'd want pumping something directly into my eyes, although I'm sure the MPAA would love it!
Mount Ararat is named in the Bible as the resting place of the Ark. That section of the Bible was written more than 2000 years ago. Scientific principles absolutely demand that someone must go up there and search for it.
No, Mount Ararat is not, the mountains of Ararat are. Scientific priciples would demand we search the entire mountain range, not just one peak. Even if something were on Mount Ararat, scientific principles would demand that we discover what it is, not climb the mountain to take pictures of the Ark, without questioning if it is in fact the ark or not.
The difference between TIFF and PNG is precisely zero.
I agree with your statement : if you compared a an RGB TIFF and a PNG, you'd likely see the exact same thing, although I've never tested. However you neglected to mention that PNG doesn't have native CMYK colorspace support (or it didn't last time I looked at it), and TIFF does. That what "difference" means. And in the print world it's a pretty monumental difference. So I still stand by my statement.
Could someone please call the recording studios and let them know they should just record to 8 track tape, and encode the audio not once but twice as 128kbps MP3s and only then rip them to CD before selling them, just because they will have lost information between the singer and the microphone?
I think maybe you're not familiar with the prupose of masters. In a nutshell, you set up your environment in order to minimize the information loss, then you record that information as perfectly as possible. That pretty much applies to the process of recording anything. The master needs to be of the highest quality possible because every generation created from that master will _at_least_ share the same defects and artifacts.
the difference between a PNG master and high quality JPEG master is negligible
You're right, but PNG and JPEG are compressed, and again the parent poster was talking about uncompressed masters (his analog was WAV vs. MP3.) The difference between RAW or TIFF(ie. the WAV or CD in his example) and JPEG or PNG (ie. the MP3) are monumental.
RUSH : 2112, Caress of Steel and Hemispheres. Ok not so much "more" recent I guess:)
Personally, The Downward Spiral flows best in the order Trent Reznor has it mastered.
Any movie soundtrack, but off the top of my head, Star Wars(and the {pre|se}quils, and the Reservoir Dogs.

Erm, believe it or not, there are a few people in the world who run Windows day to day with user accounts, and switch to administrator to do installations, etc.
The kind of user that gives his account admin privs under windows is the same user who would run as root on a linux box, because they don't know any better or they really don't care. These individuals will never be protected by any operating system.
PS. I believe Lindows runs as root by default.

Or if you're SICK OF IT and FED UP, GO ELSEWHERE ON APRIL 1ST. Watch TV. Read a Book. Or, if it's during business hours and you're employed, hell, WORK!!Quit crying about a non existant problem. Slashdot doesn't owe you anything.
If your life is so dull that a day without slashdot isn't worth living, you've got much larger problems to deal with. Can you really not live a day without a SCO update and an MS bash? You think you'd notice the pattern, after 4 YEARS. Put up or... well find something else to do.
And while we're at it, an 'April 1st karma whore' story or poll, where everyone can post their gripes about April 1st stories. I don't know which is more annoying, the lame stories, or those who feel the need to point out that it's {April 1st|Slashdot Sucks on April 1st|$poster Sucks on April 1st}in _every_ damn story.
It happens every damn year : so either get used to it or don't bother visiting today. Let them have their fun, let those who want to play along have their fun and if you have ideas, why not send them in BEFORE april 1st. In the meantime, look at it as a day where you can be productive instead of reading/. all day.

Some of the aboslute best story telling in a game. Excellent presenation, original, excellent acting. It's really hard to find fault with this game.

Agreed, but PNG doesn't support CMYK, that's why I didn't include it with RAW and TIFF. My bad for not making that distinction in the original post.
