if you leave the hood up on a 1969 Nova in mint condition in a walmart parking lot, you can bet your ass every mechanic within 5 miles will be sitting there staring at it. they won't touch anything because they don't want to break anything, but you can bet they'll be checking it out. granted, there might be some jerky that comes around with a crowbar and breaks it, but you gotta differenciate between that and gawking.
determine if this is a known issue, and if you can find many people with the same problems, start a class action lawsuit. worst case scenarion, you take a small chunk out of microsoft's $40B. Best case scenario, they have to freely replace all broken dvd drives, including S&H. I doubt it will happen, but I'd love to see it. Just remember to ride it out. don't settle for bri...er, out of court settlements.
I despise replacements for the words "you" and "are" because they're only 3 letters long. RTFM, wb and RABUF are one thing, but 'u' for 'you'? how lazy can you get?!
I get pissy with people for doing it in IRC. if I do become a teacher, I will fail them, and have them(after so many warnings) write an essay on the importance of proper spelling.
As for my own spelling, well... that's just because I suck at it. get over it.
I like how you said "dear slashdot reader" rather that you blithering fricking dolt!"
it shows a sort of compassion that most of us lack in.
ok, now for my two cents. The commentary on the article hinted that Sun is no better than microsoft in their actions towards the school. well, I have a few thoughts on that. 1) star office is based off of openoffice IIRC. that means that there will be some underlying compatibility. Obviously sun could try to scew the openoffice people, but they'd get their balls slapped for sure. 2) if sun wants to do this, good! I'd rather have two behemoths duking it out than one just mowing down the competition. if Sun was smart, they can raise their "look, we're Mr. Compatible and open(sorta)" flag. this will put microsoft on the spot.
or course I'm just a blothering fricking dolt, so who knows.
section 107 of the copyright act designates 4 factors, two of which are important:
2)character of use: is it non-profit or education use? 4)effect on potential market: will this make the product less valuable?
you're correct, these aren't laws, they're guidelines.
Since it's entering from one market where it's given away freely(TV, commercials not withstanding), to another person(not market) where it cannot be obtained by any reasonable means, I do not see where the problem would be. They only way I could see a problem with this is if it was being sold or otherwise exceeded the second guideline. it would also be a violation if it was given away enmasse to the public as a whole- however, since it's available on broadcast tv, that would not affect the market there either unless they later planned on broadcasting it to the unaffected region for profit(commercials). which would make it very difficult to exceed the 4th guideline. btw, IANAL, I'm just an idiot trying to bring some sense to the world..
yes this is off topic, and yes I will get modded down as such. man, if I had cable, I'd LOVE to give you a divx of it. hell, I'd even mail you a copy of the cd. Why? Because it's frickin fair use! If you can't watch a show, it is within your FAIR USE to have someone to record it at a later time. My parents would always do that for me when I'd miss saturday moring cartoons to go to my sanchin ryu classes. that was fair use... that's the DEFINITION of fair use. So why is this different? because it's Divx? because he asked on an open forum? if that's the case, would it be illegal to ask your bowling buddies if they could tape a show for you?
he said he'd be willing to watch the commercials, which he probably wouldn't anyways if he was watching it live(channel surf, bathroom, etc).
This is the kinda shit that makes me sick. that someone automatically thought it was in bad taste because he was excersizing his fair use rights.
To the parent poster, as I said, I don't have cable either. If someone does score you a divx of it, let me know.I doubt they'll ever release this bad boy to dvd. as for the moderators who are gonna mod me as flamebait or a troll, blow me. I have promise you I have more karma than you have mod points(unless it's an ed.).
damn, I wouldn't even get that one off of kazaa outta respect.
I'd pay money for that!

That's very interesting... where approximately are you located? I'm in the Grand Rapids area myself, and all I can find as a web developer are asp gigs. I'd much rather use php and am generally interested in any area that would be looking for php developers,
The only issues I've have with PSI are general problems locating stable transport servers. there is a website out there which I can't recall right now that lists a few, but they're all overloaded:(
I gotta cast my vote for cowboyneil as well.
I'll bite.
what about debian? is it not "what Linux is meant to be"?
I'm not a zealot, but please give credit where credit is due.
doh, lets try that again

probably not the only box they'd gladly jump at:)
if you read up on the release, nintendo kept a lot of IP, including the rights to some of their classics like donkey kong, etc.
the legacy of nintendo titles is just that- a legacy... not really an asset.
void*.
:)
damn that sounds familiar.
seem to remember
voidptr would make a great licenseplate...

"you got famous if you were a criminal or a politician."
isn't that repetitive?:)
I HAVE the m100, and I'll tell ya- it's NOT enough room.
I have games and books. that's about it. nothing else will fit.

actually, I've been thinking about this.
I wonder what the stats are from 5pm-10pm for user agents.... not that would be interesting...

2 questions
1) do you remember alladvantage?
2) where are they now?
people don't give a shit about web banners... however there was one critical factor they forgot-
local ads.
people are way more receptive to hungry howies pizza down the street than than lowermybills.com
if you advertise local stuff, local companies would be willing to pay.
go outside the area tho and you'll shoot yourself in the foot.
don't force advertisements either. show people what they're willing to see.
maybe know they'll go on a stability kick.
I don't know about you, but my system just isn't as stable as it could be, windows or linux.

"what mom? you're computer's broke? no problem, I'll upgrade it and fix it for you."
relink the mozilla icons with a big blue 'e' and *tada*.
they ask what it is, and you tell them it's the newest version. Just make sure you use the 'modern' theme. otherwise it looks like it's from 1995.
yeah it's cheap, but it takes care of the problem.

but then again, that's not exactly a psi issue.
psi rocks.
I had also mentioned xchat because it has a win32 client and a linux client.
I wasn't so sure about bitchx....
plus your parents/minister/grandma won't exactly be thrilled seeing you install bitchx on *their* machine:)
