in my small circle of friends, I don't know anyone who uses IE. granted we're all cs majors/graduates, but their families don't use IE either.
of my non-technical friends, my family, and my inlaws- all of them are using firefox.
one of my friends, upon discovering the glory of tabs proceeded to tell all of his friends about it like a bad pyramid scheme:)
It's only a matter of time before the world builds up enough momentum to switch to another browser. when it does, those remaining morons won't have a choice but to switch or have someone switch it for them.
The thing to remember is this... how long has firefox been around? how many downloads has it had each month since it came out? I'll be the number is going up, and keeps going up. eventually it's gonna add up.
The GPL gives you the right to redistribute the source provided you agree to the GPL.
The GPL takes away the right/i? to redistribute the source if you do not agree to the GPL.
In my opinion it's a moot point to argue either.
Blanket statements saying "if gpl is invalid, all EULA's are invalid" are sorta silly- it depends on why the GPL is invalid.
It IS possible that the GPL could be invalid because "once you purchase/recieve the software, it's yours to do with as you like"... which would blow a bigass hole in the EULA because the EULA usually prevents redistribution as well. It wouldn't kill it, but it would cause chaos.
What are the chances of that happening? slim to none, but weirder things have happened.
and to respond to the topic of this post, GPL is not a EULA, it's a Distribution License Agreement, which is usually covered in a EULA.
that's a bit of a flawed analogy. Stickers are mind games. They're a mental deterrent.
Which is great if you have a real live person trying to hack your machine.
The problem is nimda, blaster, etc aren't easily deterred. I'm running an apache server on linux, and I'm still getting code red hits. Viruses don't care if you got a little sticker. They're too stupid to notice. And that makes up 99% of hack attempts I'd wager.
well, slasdot gets a lot of complaints about...well, slashdotting peoples sites. why bother going through the hassle of having a bad link on your page and getting death threats from various admins for nuking their sites when they can just go with a tried and true method of a known stable site to link to?
sure, BN doesn't need any extra cash, but can addall withstand a slashdotting?
I think the/. editors are within their right to make sure the content is reliable- how often do they get bitched at for having crap?
Yeah, that's what I've found. Unemployment in the Grand Rapids, MI is between 6 and 7%. On top of that, it's a very conservative area and few are willing to give OSS a chance... There are a few VB and ASP jobs here and there, but since I didn't jump on the.net bandwagon, I'm S.O.L.
If anyone reading this is looking for a junior Linux sys admin with a web development background, feel free to send me a line. My wife and I are willing to relocate. -Morgajel
As a college graduate one year out of school with some minor sys admin experience and a couple years of web dev experience, I haven't exactly been getting many interviews. I've been searching monster, dice, career matrix, michworks, mlive and several other sites, and haven't had much luck.
I guess what I'm trying to say is there aren't many junior linux admin positions open.
When people use you as leverage, that means they acknowledge that you are a threat to your competitor, so much so that they can use it to their advantage, and get cheaper products. They're gonna know you, they've researched you.. they know what you're capable of. perhaps you're not 100% what they want, but it's enough for leverage.
Next time they need to buy supplies, they're gonna try to do the same thing- they're going to remember that you can save them money. but when they look up, they see everyone else *IS* choosing you this time. When they research you, they'll see you not only cover what the competition was doing for you, but they offer you more. 125% of what you were looking for.
My point is, next time around, you'll have a better chance- better than if they were to never have seen you in the first place. You may have lost the first battle, but you'll win the war.
or something similar. I have a gateway solo 5300, and it gets HOT. so hot, that when I compile things, it's too hot to hold. as in it has a little metal cover on the bottom over a component that's painted black and the PAINT IS PEELING OFF.
My father-in-law got a lapdesk, and after a while he went out and bought something like what they describe. after seeing how well it worked for him, I got one too.
It's sorta like a lap tray that folds in half. it has non-melty rubber strips on a plastic frame to keep the laptop from sliding off, and the structure is sorta accordian shaped and rigid, running left to right.
The nice thing about it is you can fold the thing in half and it has a like unfoldable leg that props itself up, creating a little wedge... The laptop is sitting on the desk right now on the tray and not burning my crotch or my desk.
I highly suggest trying one out, especially if you have a Gateway Solo5300 and run Gentoo on it:)
I'm not much for product cheerleading, but this thing has done it's job. it's not perfect, but it keeps the valuables from getting cooked. 7.5/10
actually, I just hook it up in my apartment and not tell anyone- then the next lan party I host not get complaints that my network is too slow. (bastards.)
I don't use Opera, but I've seen this firsthand. I also remember a while back where they flat out blocked mozilla from MSN, but the bad public backlash made them reverse it. I actually tried that one for myself and saw that it was real.
Innocent Until Proven Guilty is nice, but lets face it- we've tried that. they've broke the system countless times. they've keep saying "we'll change, honest. I'll never hit you again" and we keep falling for it like an abused wife.
MS won't stop until we actually PUNISH them... perhaps a $20 billion fine would help? that might knock some sense into them. and for each breach afterwards, another $1 billion fine. not in software- they'ed just spend $.01 in CD's and ship a couple thousand versions of their latest and greatest OS.
Someone needs to call shananigans on these bastards. Honestly, I wish Opera didn't have to settle. Theoretically, they could win the case, but by the time they won, $12 million woulda been pocket change for a hobo.
This is probably one of my greatest pet peeves with Micosoft. They fricken abuse the system. They're just not trustworthy.
Innocent until proven guilty is nice, but how long are we going to wait to finally punish them for the things we KNOW they did wrong?
(sorry, don't take that as a personal attack, I just get worked up over MS).
yeah, that's what I was thinking, but the meds were kicking in and I couldn't figure out a way to be that eloquent, so I just said tech support.
thank you.
Now perhaps we can see some real work done. my only concern with this is the slippery slope argument- if they kill your connection for spyware, what next? kazaa? IRC servers?
it's sorta funny how the ISPs position themselves. When I originally got DSL through ameritech, I chose them because they were advertizing you could use your bandwidth "however you want!" meaning you could run mail/irc/web servers and they weren't blocking them, as opposed to the local cablemodem companies that were blocking mailservers at the time.
Times have changed, and they've removed those claims... I'm waiting to throw a good bait and switch lawsuit at them if they try anything funny....bastards.
something I'd like to see- if they're infected, move their DHCP to point to a shiny happy special "foobar" dns where all URL's go to "you're infected. to regain connectivity, click the following links, install this junk, run it, and call this tech support line to have your machine be mr happy again."
yes, it would cost them money in tech support, but it would save them money in transporting spam on their network.
if you have 30 blips on the map, then that's only 30 places to check. it's a little bit more work, but much less than a full-on search and rescue.
if you really wanted to get advanced, have the tracker contain 2 buttons- "help!" and "I'm ok" if someone is lost, beep the tracker- if someone responds back with I'm ok, don't investigate it. if they don't respond back or send "help" investigate it.
For our wedding. We went looking for a photographer with one thing in mind- we wanted the rights to the pictures. We had quite a few negative reactions from photographers (even from a friend), but eventually found a good one. We had all the pictures put on CD's. All in all pretty successful. My wife has some of the pictures on her site. Since her family is into scrapbooking, CD's were cheaper to hand out that prints.
Storyline is fine, as long as it can fit on one page of an old NES cartridge manual.
Sometimes the simplest of storylines provide all the setting needed for a good game.
I'd like to see a "getting back to basics" style game... side scrollers, overhead 2d like FFI, etc... Design the game and playability like that's all you had, come up with the design, plot, etc... THEN implement the graphical voodoo- get their priorities in check.
replying to my own post... It would be nice if the editors would read every single story that passed through their inbox, but as it's stated in the FAQ, they get tons of stories a day. It would be nice if the editors spent all their time validating the quality of the story, but I'm gathering they spend most of the time making sure the medium(slashcode) and the machines are functioning properly.
*shrug* I honestly don't think it's really worth arguing over... sorta like spellchecking a meaningless post on slashdot... I have better things to do.
Slashdot didn't plagerize, the submitter did. It's been said time and time again that editors don't read the articles- how are they supposed to know that the submitter plagerized it?
I'm noticing more and more that the current crop of law enforcement agencies are increasingly incapable of handling this sort of problem. The only way they seem to be able to handle it is if we give them free reign and throw out all of our rights.
The only thing I can see working is vigilante justice. Find out who is doing it, and beat the ever-loving shit out of them. Frame them. Do what you have to do to make this bastards either quit doing what they're doing, or get them in Legal trouble.
Yes, it's illegal, but is it wrong? If I wasn't such a coward, I'd consider it. But I have a wife with babyrage, so I must keep that in mind. Those that do not, those that are bored with their lives.... Go after a spammer, go after a Spyware maker. make their lives a living hell. I'll cheer everytime I see you on the news.
