getting away with this. Publicly, it's a 'fine', but on paper, it's a 'fee'. They get to say they're fining sites they don't want to do business with when in actuality they're just charging them more because they can. I wish I was half as evil as Palpal, I'd be rich.
Contract or no, from what I understand they can't levey fines. The can demand losses, but they can't assess penalties. Only the Gov't can do that. I seem to remember Video Stores losing over this, which is why they stopped charging late fees and switched to just billing you for another rental.
I have never understood why one person thinks that in any circumstance that because one person has more than another, it should be considered alright to take it away from them and give it to someone.
Because in nearly all cases, if one person has so much more than another that the other isn't eating, that person didn't create his wealth, he tricked society into giving it to him. This isn't me taking the bread you grew away from you, this is me taking the bread I grew back from you after some perverted twist of society gave it to you.
it just takes some getting used to. Ok, a lot of getting used to. But once you do, you'll find that you can rock the pad a little up or down for an instant diagnal motion. Not so big a deal unless you're playing a newer fighting game, then it's great.
An the Dualshock is the greatest control pad ever if only for one reason: I can finally play Virtua On the way it was meant to be played:). And give Ape Escape a go sometime, It's more fun than a barrel full of monkeys (yes, I said it).
How exactly do you rack up $68M in debt developing a PC anyway? The personal computer is pretty straightforward as it is... most of the work has already been done.
Licensing fees. Games don't grow on trees after all, and Infinium probably had to cough up major dough for the right to market PC games. That, and I have no doubt the owners are drawing a hefty salary. Oh, and developing and mass producing a custom piece of hardware, even one based on off the shelf components, is pricey too. Microsoft pulled it off with cheap Mexican labor and bribing the local officials to ignore little things like safey and environmental regulations. I doubt Infinium has that kind of skill/money.
Dojinshi and what not. They probably didn't expect a cease and desist, since Japan is traditionally pretty lax about this sort of thing. Heck, it's encouraged. I guess it's another sign of corporate America cramming our ideals down everyone's throats. Oh well, square's been becomming more and more about money making lately anyway. And yes, I know making money is important, but there are some things you just don't do to your fan base (FFX-2 anybody?).
Chrono isn't a trademark. A trademark is just what the name implies, a mark for your trade. The word 'squaresoft' is a trademark. It identifies the game publisher called squaresoft. Trademarks, like businesses, can exist pretty much forever. This is reasonable since you're likely to pass your business on to your kids and you don't want another business pretending to be them. But we still need some way to expire trademarks, and that's why they have to be defended.
Copyright doesn't have to be defended. You can cheerfully ignore abuse right up to the end and then sue all you want.
At least this is how it works in the USA, I assume Japan is simular (what with all the presure we here in the US put on countries to do what we say).
the 7800 had the worst controllers in history (yes, worse than the 5200). They wore out quickly, where useless when they did, and where downright painful for long play time.
We're essentially feeding China. But as for a backlash, so what? The important people (the rich) are Global now. The fall of one country is meaningless to them. In fact they profit, since the continual shift of misery means perpetually low wages for all but ruling class.
On the other hand, a really nasty war over increasingly scarce metals is brewing. God help us when the rest of China/India decides to industrialize.
Saying stress cost us $300 billion a year assumes our economy exists to maximize overall wealth and happiness. In point of fact, our economy is built around making a select few staggeringly wealthy. All enonomies throughout history have been. Right now we're not really noticing this because Globalization has allowed most people in developed countries to be comfortable w/o having that 1% of the populace who won't settle for less than their every desire compromise a few of the more extravagant ones.
But as the rest of the world developes, we're running into serious resource shortages. As these shortages start to be felt, the greedy won't scale back their extravagance, so the rest will be made to suffer. The stress will be increased, your health will go to hell. But it won't matter, since there are plenty of fresh bodies to replace you, just waiting to be used up. Right now this is an issue because society can afford to coddle it's workers while letting that 1% live like they always have (the phrase 'live like a king' didn't just come out of nowhere). Wait and see. The response to a study like this won't be treating workers better, it'll be discarding them faster.
they wouldn't be playing graphically detailed and realistic war games. At least not until they're old enough to distinguish reality and fantasy. It's called Parenting. Of course, I'm too lazy to acually do it, which is precicely why I don't have kids (it's got nothing to do with me posting on/. on a Saturday night, really:D ).
At my job instant digital communication is used to get permission for every little thing you do to cover your rear. It really kills productivity, especially when you have to explain to some idiot why he shouldn't do the dumb thing he wants permission for. Better to let them get burned a few times.
good luck getting that insurance company to pay. I'm pretty poor, and so are my friends. I've been lucky, but they've all had accidents. Everyone of them has paid out of pocket. Luckly nobody was killed and the damage was mimimal. Otherwise they'd have been destroyed. Insurance that pays, like most things in society, is for the rich.
So, for the people who end up having expenses far exceeding their premiums, and can back up their insurance claim with legal action, yeah, it's worth it. For everyone else, it's a sham crammed down our throats by lobbiests who dragged out a few sob stories to get people to agree. Funny thing is, those people who had their lives destroyed by a hit and run w/o insurance probably still today would see their lives destroyed. Heck it'd be worse, cause they'd have a protracted legal fight they can't win on top of everything else.
would be really profitable. I'm sure some enterprising sole will hack the thing in no time. The first few will get caught, but I look forward to the survivors:). Not that I'm planing on cheating (no morals, I'm just afraid I'd get caught. You don't fuck with companies that big). Still, anything that screws over the bloated bastards who run insurance companies is cool by me.

Imagine if that was patented. It's been shown to be the fastest sort possible, if I remember right. Or how about all those patents apple has on Font Rendering? There's lots of stuff in Math that there's only one way of doing right. That's why you weren't allowed to patent algorythms in the past.
There's no jobs. Thanks to outsourcing our economy is in shambles (and getting worse daily). If you're lucky enough to get an IT job, you keep it. Otherwise you get stuck with blue collar work (until Bush's work visa program hits, then expect to lose those jobs too).
imagine if we all used our max upload bandwidth 24/hrs a day. ISP would need to modify their networks to work around this. At least I assume they would. As it is, many 'unmetered' isps will start sending you nastygrams if you make heavy use of your upload bandwidth, but otherwise look the other way when you run a server. Keep in mind that all these p2p apps violate most IPS' TOS (mine doesn't let you run a server of any kind, and while there are places where enforcement of that would be silly, there's still plenty of room for a crack down).
as will ISPs if it takes off. Right now with bandwidth usage centralized it's pretty easy to bill for it. If you decentralize it with p2p via millions of always on unmetered clients/servers it gets hard, if not impossible. I kinda hope it doesn't take off, since if it does it could end unmetered Internet access...
It's not because the money was taken from the rich, it's because so many people died during WWI/WWII that a) the survivors had their pick of what was left and b) the rich had to coddle the poor until their numbers swelled back up enough to abuse. That, and the cold war which kept the normal forces of capitalism in check with false patriotism and fear (i.e. you can't very well outsource all your workers in a world that unstable).
All that's changed, and the time is ripe for things to be rotten all over again. Your secure jobs and social justice are evaporating. They were illusions brought on by a very specific set of circumstances following WWII. The problem is there are an unlimited number of people willing to do anything to anyone to have their desires met. If you could have a society of 10 million well off people and perhaps 100,000 wealthy bastards, it stands to reason that out of those 10 million well off most will be willing to put the other 9,999,999 million into abject poverty so they can join the rich. While my assertion doesn't represent any hard research on human behavior, I think the past 2000 years will back me up.
Technology is not a solution to this problem. It just doesn't matter how much wealth technology generates, unless it can generate totally unlimited wealth (which it can't). There will always be plenty of those greedy fucks doing horrid things to other poeple just to join the ranks of the rich.
You should already have DMA, since it's on by default in scsi emulation (I used to turn scsi emulation on for just that purpose). Still, you're better off w/o scsi emulation, it can do weird things with the device nodes. Check your lilo.conf or grub.conf for the line 'hdc=ide-scsi' and remove it.
If you want better speed, upgrade to the latest DVD+/-rw-tools. There's a ton of recently fixed speed bugs with newer drives. Install from source is easy. just make && make install as root and it'll copy itself in/usr/local where k3b will find it (you'll have to go in and tell k3b to use the new binaries). I couldn't set my speeds correctly until I upgraded, and was left choosing between 8x (not happening on my 4x media) or 1x. Once I upgrade everthing just worked.
because the workers in those countries are treated like shit. The trouble with our new economy of cheap foreign goods and labor is what happens when those poeple get tired of living like shit. I'm not saying they're gonna rise up, because if they do a modern military and management system will just slap 'em down, hard. But eventually the employeers are gonna realize they can make just as much money selling consumer goods to Indians as Americans, and suddenly they're gonna stop supplying us with all these cheap consumer goods. Meanwhile our economy has ground heavily dependent on them because nobody has a job worth a fuck.
If there's any hope for these people to be treated like anything but animals (and for some equality in the world economy), we need to force their gov'ts to act by using tarrifs and sanctions that demand they hold thier employeers to the same standards we do. Then again, that's about as likely to happen as every worker in India getting a free pony. Oh well, enjoy your $30 DVD players, I know I will.
It's not a 'net benefit to society' because the rich fuck who owns the company (or the rich fucks who own the bulk of the stock, if you prefer) don't pass that money out to society, they keep it. What's really happening with outsourcing is the wealthy are counteracting the gains made post-WWII in order to once again forge a society where their every whim and fancy is made real to the extantant human ability allows.
Us proles got it too good right now. The problem with a middle class is there's always one greedy bastard who wants to be rich. And the only way to be rich is for someone to be poor. Don't give me that crap about standards of living and 'reasonable wages in context' either. By definition, a rich man recieves a great deal more of socieity's wealth and power than a poor man. If somebody has more then somebody has less. We're starting to bump up against the limits of our plant, for metals if not for energy. If people are allowed to be their usual greedy, nasty selves like they have been for the past 2000+ years the future is gonna be ugly. Real ugly.
