Perhaps proper USB support in the peripheral makes more difference than the OS?
This is so true. I once received a cheap camera when I switched my cell phone provider. The drivers on the cd wouldn't install properly, and the manufacturer didn't even have homepage where I could download new drivers. Propably some "fake" company whose name is used to sell those cameras that don't make it trough the quality control in some other camera factory.
Only way to get the images from the camera was to use a memory card, and plug that in a memory card reader.
If they're uploading significantly slower than they're downloading, yes, the swarm speed will go down. However any intelligent seed will cut your download speed correspondingly. That's how bittorrent works.
Most people have less bandwidth for uploading than downloading. So yes, the swarm speed will go down.
And if I pay $ for my movie, I won't seed it full speed for 2 weeks after downloading, which I may do in case of my favourite linux distro torrents.
Best way to learn how Linux works is by breaking it. And then spending 3 days trying to fix it. And then breaking it again. And again. And again.
And it's easy, all you need to do is try to get that weird piece of equipment working, or that x version of software y which isn't in your distributions repository. And Linux will break. And you'll learn it! It's great!
Damn Sims, people who play this sucky game are the same fancies who watch Survivors and cry when their favourite drops out. Or watch Queer Eye For Idiots to get tips on how to dress. Real men play Doom3 and Half-Life 2, when they are not training to become better ninjas.
Only way for The Sims to become playable for us Real Men, would be to include ninjas and pirates ( also replace all relationshipstuff with killing, and "build your own house" should be changed to "destroy your neighbours house").
I've had it with you linux-loving, Sims playing fairies, I will no longer read any other website than the best page in the universe. You can keep on discussing about the latest Barbie's Pony game and when it's linux port is coming out.
Ease of use does not mean it has to be insecure!! Strong passwords and patched applications do not make usage difficult!!
Complex things require complex computer systems. Complex computer systems are complex to keep secure, more so when you need to maintain some kind of level of usability.
All finnish men have to do their military service, which is 180, 270 or 360 days. Usually men go to this service after "basic" schools, at the age of 18 or 19. The military service starts either july or the next january. This leaves you time, when you have nothing to do ( if you can't get a job ).
During this time some ppl get addicted to net. And it's not just the net, it's the hours. Pretty much every net addict has bizarre sleeping pattern. Usually you go on chatting/surfing/playing 15-24hours, and then get some sleep, when you get really really tired. You have no obligations to be awake at some given time.
One finnish news site said, that the biggest problem was adjusting to regular sleeping pattern, not the actual net addiction.
The first weeks in the army are ofcourse the worst. You are in a totally new enviroment, you don't know anyone, and you live in a single room with 8-12 other men. Lots of people keep yelling at you and bossing you around, and that makes people very stressed. During those first weeks, pretty much everyone wants to quit.
When you add sleep disorder to this, you pretty much are done for it. There's no way you can maintain your mental health and motivation.
I had no problems during my service time, but I know what those sleep disorders from too much computer using can do to you. It's total hell trying to live as a productive member of society, when you simply can't sleep during the nights. Almost screwed up my school because of that, but luckily I'm over it now.
But it still bugs me that sleeping 7-8 hours a night and spending 9 hours a day of your time to work, it leaves you so very little spare time. Atleast to compared to the situation where you had nothing else than spare time.
About a month ago I decided to give linux a try. And this time not just fiddling with VMWare, but really install it on my comp. My distro decision was FC2, since I had it on DVD (though I had heard some bad things about it). Before I had played around with Gentoo, Mandrake, SuSE, FC1 etc under VMWare.
So after a week of fighting with the installer ( about few hours every day after work, pretty much my all spare time ) I finally discovered that I need to remove my SBLive to get linux installed on my system.
So there goes the installation finally, I prepared the partitions in windows with PQMagic, that made things easy for me ( hda, hdb, hdc, wtf, I don't have such things, I just have C, D, E... ).
So I started installing the software I needed. That is dc hub, dc client, irssi, firefox, thunderbird etc. So I spent about 2 to 3 nights to get those working properly, especially dc hub to start when I start the pc.. Goddamn, why oh why do you need all that init.d, rc5.d, dynamic links, script files.. At this point I was really starting to get pissed off with the complexity of linux.
So now I had the essential software on my FC2 installation. Next thing to do was to set up ntfs-drives, not too difficult, just got the rpm, and some weird mount -t ntfs -commands. And it worked! Ofcourse fstab was totally different than mount, but there were lots of how-tos to be found.
By this time google's admins were propably thinking about banning my ip for trying a DDOS attack.
Ok, the system is now running smoothly. Now to get the tv-out working on my gf2gts. Shouldn't be that difficult, just get the drivers from nvidia and install those. And don't forget to edit your configuration files, since for some reason linux-programs are uncapable of doing things like that automatically.
Well ofcourse that didn't work. After googling a while, I discovered the problem was my kernel and 4kstacks. So there I go downloading the 8kstack rpm of the kernel, after installing it everything should work smoothly. Except that I lost my NTFS-partitions again. And the NTFS-patch wouldn't work on the 8kstack kernel.
So now I'm forced to compile the kernel. Luckily I had done this few time in VMWare, so I wasn't totally lost. After few hours ( so you compile and install it in 15 minutes ? Sry, I don't remember by heart all those little things you have to do after compiling the kernel, like reconfiguring grub ).
And then to install the nvidia drivers. There was some problems again, but after few nights configuring the silly conf files I finally got it working ( there really is too few guides for xorg.. ). And with some nvtvout I even managed to get the tv-out to work without almost any problems! Wonderful! Except that I needed to type root password every time I started the program, since it has to be run as root.
So only about a weeks worth of configuring and googling and booting again and again, I finally got my system up and running as I wanted it. BTW by this time the installation was totally broken, since I changed the locales to get finnish keyboard ( without UTF-8 ), YUM wouldn't work and random menus were in finnish. Don't know what I did wrong.
All was fine, until I decided that KDE wasn't as snappy as GUI should be on a 1700+xp with 512MB mem. So few night trying to install xcfe, and then I finally decided that this linux-thingie totally fucking sucks ass, and I changed back to my sweet windows xp. Haven't regretted since.
I'm not sure about this, but the author want's to open MS Project file. Because he's looking for emulators, I'm assuming that there's no ( working ) software in *nix enviroment that can open MS Project files.
Even if there was one, I don't think it would be 100% compatible and easy to use.
Why is it, therefore, here at/. there is such open hatred for Judeo-Christian beliefs when just about anything else goes?
Because there is no proof that God uses linux.
Native Americans had a good GPL license for all of earth, and we all know what./ers think about GPL. Also the well known Knot Project by the aztec's made great progress as a GPL project. Until later on ofcourse, when Cortes came along and stated that the Knot had some IP of the Spaniards, and demanded the aztecs to give him huge shitloads of gold for using the Knot-system.
I once had a bit similiar problem with my little nethack-style game. The check if there was a wall in front of you was quite simple, but if you tried long enough, the character would pop right trough the wall.
I never figured out what happened there.. Quess it was some overflow error with Amiga 500 and AMOS, since it never happened on my friends A1200.
There was also finnish play version of the Lord Of The Rings (Taru Sormusten Herrasta). Proof only in finnish though. I missed it on tv, saw some clips though and remember that it was quite enchanting. But I was quite small then (small as in Frodo size), maybe some finnish/.er has seen the actual play?
MMORPG version of Robot Wars game? Count me in!
I heard it gets really boring after 4th season :(
He's an ex-footballer. He's never heard of Zelda in the same way the poster's never heard of Ian Wright.
Football? What's that? But nevermind that, I still can't believe someone doesn't know Zelda! Don't they teach you anything at school these days?

If they are smart enough to use packet or satellite, then they can use BSD or Linux.
Many measurement devices don't have required software ported for [insert your *nix].
OOo doesn't have the same capabilities as Excel, essential in many enviroments.
And who is going to pay for porting that Excel/VBA/Access/MS SQL/etc stuff to BSD/Linux?
Er.. So how do you open the pic of that cute girl to a new tab while browsing one-handed?
Pr0n aside, how does one handed person use a single button mouse?
