First of all, you can't "win them all", so to speak.
Second of all, you pretty much have to rely on consensus.
Here's a couple of sites that can help you make a decision:
"Exactly - would you buy a car without test-driving it? Absolutely not. Expecting people to fork out tens of dollars on something that could very well turn out to be unstomachable crap is asking a lot."
Well, your test drive won't tell you much more than how the car "feels" overall (handling, acceleration, braking) and its looks. The car you actually end up buying could very well be a lemon and the whole line can have reliability problems.
As for "test driving" music, films or books, I sometimes rely on people called "critics". Then I decide if I take the plunge.

"How about just stop taking caffeine, nicotine, or whatever it is you are addicted to (if you wish to stop that is)."
Sure, why not? Just stop. Nothing to it, really. Man, you should get a Nobel Prize or something. Nobody ever suggested that before. If those things were not, you know, *addictions*, it would be easier and we would not have this thread.
"I think it's better to watch a film in the language it's created in. Who knows if the translation is correct?"
Well, my girlfriend is a translator. She translates "Biography" and some fares like that for the Quebec market. For the voice over, no major problems. But for some other voices, you have to fit the text and have it match for the actor's lips. Sometimes, some meaning can change.
BTW, her teacher was the guy who translated/adapted Star Wars : TPM. Jar-Jar lost his stereotypical accent and what he said was actually very funny. But the dialogue for the Darth Vader-to-be kid was atrocious.

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your troubles
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to go where you can go
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name
You want to go where you can go
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name, and your SSN, your photo, your fingertips, your retina scaaaan.
I've used Mont Blanc's pens and fountains pens for about 20 years now.
For me, the most important factors in chosing a writing instrument are its weight and balance. It can change the way you write.
If I use a Bic pen, I write in a slightly modern version of gibberish. With a Mont Blanc, I can actually read back what I wrote.
And please don't buy the biggest one, as another poster suggested. Mont Blanc usually offers three sizes : small, medium and Humvee. These sizes should not be read as price points; they make these different sizes to reflect the variety of the sizes of hands in nature.

I was quite surprised that nobody mentionned drugs.
The Tour the France is basically corrupted because of the drugs. If you think that Lance Armstrong is running on clear, spring water, you are delusional. He just happens to have better train^H^H^H^H^H doctors.
I work for a small but succesfull company. We sell specialized security products. From the bosses to the secretaries, it's all Macs. They all used (and swore by) Explorer, until Safari arrived. Now they all use and swore by it.
I'm the lone Windows developer here. I still use Netscape 4.7 on my workplace PC (for compatibility reasons), and Mozilla on my workplace Mac.
There's even a colleague who swears by Opera, do not like it anymore, hates Explorer, and does not even consider the possibility of using Mozilla!
I'm French-Canadian and I've read the Tintin comic-books about 10-20 times each since I was a tike.
When I re-read these books as an adult, I take great pleasure in them, but I also see their limitations. Adapting them for a modern movie audience as the books *are*, they'll bomb.
They will have to be re-written for the most part, and all I can see is that they'll be "Indiana Jones" knock-offs.
It does not matter who'll produce/direct/write those films. They'll be anything *but* what Tintin is/was.
I would prefer if they simply bought the rights to the Tintin name and write completely new stuff. At least I'd be mildly interested.

A nice and cheap book about the future as imagined in the early 20th century :

Next thing you know, they'll import homeless from China, undercutting local homeless. They have no shame.

Or as we French-Canadian would say : Bravo!

I mean, machines have beaten us for a long time.
We're not complaining about cars going faster than us. That's why it's still exciting to watch the Olympics 100-meters.
I don't care one bit about man vs. machine in chess.
All I care is man vs. man.

Sorry, I did not read any other replies, and I'm late on this thread (but I read the FA).
If there's another attack on US territory, me thinks it will not come by plane, like 9/11 anyway.

Do we really need another debate about VHS vs Beta? Beta is dead, VHS won, and will itself be replaced by DVD-R in a few years. Enough already!
I remember it quite vividly : a gas mask coming out at me, and a nurse singing a little child song.
My mother told me that I was three when it happened as it was the only time I was ever put under general anesthesia.
