life outside of our solar system is probably not at all like the life we find here on Earth

My research suggests that we should expect most extra-terrestrial life-forms to be humanoids that speak english, although they will have some strange features such as blue skin or completely white eyes or something. But nothing so grotesque that your average /. reader wouldn't want to shag their women, who are all quite shapely.

  3. Series Perhaps? on Nit-Pickers Guide to Deviations in Jackson's LotR · · Score: 1

I suppose this was bound to happen but frankly, the movies are long enough already, if they added in all this other crap you'd need a damned diaper to make it thru 1 movie.

I would have loved to see LoTR done as a series. From the first movie, The Fellowship of The Ring, I found the films to be incredibly fast paced as they raced through the events in the books. Jackson did an amazingly good job on the films, but it's impossible to do the books justice even with 3 long films. You miss out a lot of the smaller moments of interplay between characters that make the books special. There are so so many events in the books that you could easily break the story up into maybe 20 or 30 hour long shows. How cool would that be!. Although I understand that the idea might not be as commercially viable as making films.

  4. Re:carp is a freshwater fish on Australia To Use GM To Control Carp · · Score: 1

Carp were released into Australian waterways to get rid of blue-green algae, which from memory is an algae caused by fertilizer run-off. The carp actually feed on this algae, which solves that problem, but unfortunately they have taken over our lakes and rivers. I can only guess that the idea of introducing Carp into our waterways was thought up by the same genius that introduced cane toads to protect our sugar cane crops.

  5. RoTK will be awesome... on First Review Of Return Of The King · · Score: 4, Interesting

Surely the first two films were evidence enough the Jackson can be trusted to transform the Return of the King into an excellent film. Like a lot of die-hard Tolkein fans I found some scenes in the first two movies a little disappointing, but these disappointments were completely overshadowed by the splendour of what are overall two fantastic movies. If you doubt Jackson at all then go and buy the special edition DVD and watch the behind the scenes footage where you see the passion and dedication that has gone into the making of these films.

I think you are being extremely cynical. The cinema version of the movie has to have a reasonable strucutre and flow so that the unwashed masses can enjoy the film. The fact that us nerds will have the opportunity to buy an extended version on DVD that dispenses with these restrictions is something to be applauded, rather than criticised. It's not like most of us wouldn't have bought it anyway, even if it didn't have the extended scenes.

Hmm, how about the "I'm not dead" scene in The Holy Grail, or the bit where they are trying to determine how to tell if someone is a witch ... "Churches!", or the "Big Nose" scene in The Life of Brian. I love Michael Palin and Terry Jones, but I wouldn't rain on Eric Idle's parade because of it. The fact of the matter is that if you take the mass of the struck car, the type of tire and it's coefficient of friction, and the mass of the car which struck it, you can determine speed

How do you work out the coefficient of friction?. This is not a simple physics equation based on tire rubber. The cars crumple to a certain extent upon collision, which accounts for some of the transferred energy. How do you propose to determine the amount of energy absorbed by crumpling?. It seems to me that there are too many variables to make this type of analysis feasible.

I dare say that estimating speed at impact would be based more on analysis of skid marks, and crash analysis by experts who know what to look for.

A little off topic perhaps, but I am compelled to put forward a similar idea of my own which deals with public revenge.

I don't like taxes, and especially I don't like paying taxes to pay for scum to sit in jail, when they are better off in a hole somewhere. But capital punishment is also an expensive process because of the bureaucracy involved. The answer is what I like to refer to as the "Basher Lotto". Quite simply, when somebody is sentenced to death, instead of paying someone impartial to do the deed, provoke public outrage and hold a lottery to see who wins the right to do it.

Let me give you an example. Ted Bundy is sentenced to death. We hold a national lottery with, say, 3 winners, who all get to participate in beating him to death. I also think a nominal number of members from the victims immediate family should be given the right to participate by default. This might sound barbaric, but electrocuting someone or poisoning them is no party either. At least my idea brings revenue back into the system, and allows society to feel that they are involved in the legal revenge process :-)

Unless of course you are talking about rebuilding oil wells. Those will be rebuilt in record time. Then the US will all be able to say that they have spent billions of dollars rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure, and providing food rations. How very Magnanimous.
