  1. Free Advertising...? on In-Depth Sims Online Development Story · · Score: 1, Flamebait

This is the third Sims Online article I've seen posted to the front-page in recent memory (and I can't remember that for back, trust me, puff puff). Is this really "Stuff that matters" so much as to warrant this much advertising? Most of the posts are people saying the beta sucks, or they won't play it, etc... Why so much free advertising for them, then?

Depends. If the monkeys signing up are doing so so that they can jerk-off for four years and then have a degree and expect to just get handed a good job, yes.

But if you're going there because you want to learn something, no. But in that case the lack of job opportunities shouldn't bother them in the least.

It's only going to get worse, folks.

I graduated last year. The thing is, when I started my degree only 1 out of every 12 person who applied would be accepted. You had to *WORK*, you had to *COMPETE*, and the degree meant something.

The year after I graduated/left they increased their size eight times. So now in four/five years there's going to be EIGHT TIMES as many students looking for jobs.

I suspect my local Uni isn't the only in the entire world. People still think that the Tech industry is booming so they go for a degree. IT'S NOT.

It's getting to be a broken record of recent graduates asking "Waitaminute, where's my job?"

My best friend from Uni graduated fairly high, was one of the best low-level people I've ever met. After 8 months of trying to find a job he finally decided to join the army. BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE.

The tech industry is no longer calmoring to hand you a fat paycheque - get out now if you still can.

Since the product isn't ready yet, they obviously can't sell it. Is the business generating revenue? No. Is it fair to call it a money pit? Not if the product can be finished with the money they've got and will sell well."

Sorry, but I disagree here. Your first point, alright. But this to me is the very definition of money-pit - Throwing tons of money at an idea that "will" pay off in the future. By your own scenario, the definition of money-pit can only be applied retroactively. If you throw a ton of money at something for two years, it's in limbo - if it comes up bad then it must have been a money-pit.

I'd say that a business is a money-pit untill it starts generating revenue. At that point it loses its pit status, but untill it demonstrates that you're better of investing your money than burning it...

My only question to you would be, why?

Why is it so important that the true fans keep searching for that one series that gets someone who doesn't particularly care for anime into anime?

Why is it a good thing?

(As an aside - I spent my four years at university as the non-anime fan friend of all the Anime geeks. For some inexplicable reason they seemed to dedicate their lives to getting me into it. ... Every time I'd politely watch, say it was pretty good, but that I still wasn't a "fan".)

If a person or a group of people aren't fans, why keep trying to expose them to it untill they are? It's not like people are completely unaware that it exists. Maybe one day I, and everyone else in the world like me, will get an inkling to go down the video store and pick up whatever series. But untill then, why is it important that it stays available on the Cartoon Network so that I can happen past it?

  11. Why should this frustrate anyone? on Adult Swim Revamps; Removes Most Anime · · Score: 4, Insightful

Does it effect the hardcore? No, they've probably got the DVDs, videos, or DiVX copies.

Does it effect the casual fan? No, if you're a casual fan and they stop showing them then it just fades away in your memory. If you really miss it, buy the DVDs or whatever, otherwise just forget it.

The only people I can see this really effecting is the average non-fan whom the anime geeks of the world wish would get wise to anime. The only "frustrating" thing is that anime is no longer as extensively offered to those who don't care for it enough to seek it out. ... Why should that be frustrating?

Just because you LOVE anime, and think anyone with any sense whatsoever SHOULD LOVE anime doesn't mean it's Cartoon Network's duty to expose it to them, and frankly a large segment of western culture will never get into anime, and would much rather watch the Oblongs, Futurama, Undergrads, or whatever. All I'm saying is - Let them.

Folks, they're two different animals. The fact that Go contains a massively larger tree and is harder for a computer to play is mostly irrelevant in terms of human players. Both are (for the foreseeable future) too large to even consider calculating. Both trees would contain more nodes than the number of particles in the entire universe.

Imagine it this way. Take two rich people - one has 400 Billion dollars, and one has 500 billion dollars. Clearly the second one is much richer than the first, but that's in no way a slight to the less wealthy person. Both have more money than they'll ever reasonably be able to spend in a hundred years. It would take extraordinary circumstances for the second persons extra hundred billion to be felt at all.

Right after High School I was SICK of school. All I wanted was to get some blue collar job and live a moderate life. So I bummed around all summer, and most of the fall, untill I got a warehouse job. Within three days I went to the Registrar to sign up for Comp.Sci. And even after that I had another 8 or so months untill school started for me, so I had more reality crammed down my throat. Why is this a good thing? Because REALITY BLOWS.

Of course the negative is I didn't get along with the vast majority of other first-years when I finally went - they had all come straight from university and had no clue what the real world was. They slacked all their classes because they didn't know what was out there for those who didn't PASS. If I hadn't done it, I probably would've slacked and failed too.

It's true that Blackjack is the only game you play against the casino where you can gain a positive expectation over time. But keep in mind that Poker is not against the Casino, it's against your fellow players. It's not terribly difficult to become reasonable "good" at poker (at least to the point where you can beat the average Vegas tourist). Plus this has the added advantage that the Casino doesn't care if you win or lose - no matter who wins they still get their rake. Why spend all kinds of time and energy trying to fight a multi-billion dollar industry for their money, when you can just sheer the sheep at the Poker tables?
