Well in theory at least. Instead of bitching on slashdot, why dont people ever do anything? Think about how many people read slashdot per day thousands of people, and not just any people. The people who read slashdot are all, whether they like to believe it or not, in quite powerful (and often underrated) positions of society. There are lots of us and we all come here to read every day. If someone were to organise people into actually doing something, we could get a lot done very fast.

For example, assuming the Internet was to be commercialized how long do you thing that proposal would last without techies to actualy keep it running.

A slashdot union (of sorts) could have a devistating effect if it were coordinated correctly and would make sort work of stupid laws (DMCA) outdated associations (MPAA, RIAA) and rediculious yet plausably possible scenerios (current story, SCO)

    Just a thought.

  18. Re:What is the jurisdiction here? on Australian Federal Court Overturns Legal Modchip Sales · · Score: 0

    In a nutshell:

District Court of New South Wales - The District Court has jurisdiction to hear all indictable criminal offences (except murder, treason and piracy); and civil matters with a monetary value up to $750,000, - or greater with the consent of the parties. The Court also has an unlimited jurisdiction in respect of motor accident cases.
The Court can also deal with applications under the De Facto Relationships Act 1984, and the Family Provision Act 1982, that involve property worth not more than $250,000.
The Court's judges hear appeals from the Local Court and also preside over a range of administrative and disciplinary tribunals.

The Supreme Court of New South Wales - The highest court in the State is the Supreme Court of NSW. It has unlimited civil jurisdiction and handles the most serious criminal matters.
The Court of Appeal and Court of Criminal Appeal hear appeals from decisions made in most of the Courts of New South Wales and from decisions made by a single judge of the Supreme Court.

Federal Court - The Court's jurisdiction is broad, covering almost all civil matters arising under Australian federal law and some summary criminal matters.

High Court - The High Court is the highest court in the Australian judicial system. It was established in 1901 by Section 71 of the Constitution. The functions of the High Court are to interpret and apply the law of Australia; to decide cases of special federal significance including challenges to the constitutional validity of laws and to hear appeals, by special leave, from Federal, State and Territory courts.

It also should be noted that any court decision techinicaly could be overturned by the hourse of lords in England and ultimately our Queen by way of our Governer General, of course this wouldn't happen unless there was a very extreme circumstance

  21. Re:how does autoskipping commercials work? on ReplayTV DVR to Remove Features · · Score: 0

It seems to me the answer is simple, here in Australia the commercials are louder then the television programs, this of course is illegal but the networks just use "Compression" rather then increasing the decebels. This effectively makes the commercial _sound_ louder even though it isn't, as far as im concerned if something sounds louder then it is louder... but I digress. To detect when a commercial is beginning you would have to analyse the sound for compression, im no sound engineer but that seems possible.

  22. Re:Why is Flash-only a sin? on New Terminator 3 Trailer Released · · Score: 0

Why is it a "major sin" that it is Flash only?

The producers of this site wanted to make an impressive multi-media rich site to make people want to go see their film. The only way to really do that effectively is with Flash. The vast majority of people have the Flash plug-in, and won't really care (or even know) what format the site is in.

I care because, on a 56k modem, heaps of useless sounds and animations that I need not see are downloaded. Sounds on webpages are a bad idea in general, ever got one of those flash banner ads with the loud repetitive music? What about the blind (Granted I doubt many blind people are itching to go see this movie) flash is a bit hard to appreciate on a brail display. Not everyone is on broardband, flash is annoying and people who use it should introduce themselves to css.

I believe Doom 3's release will be followed by a huge leap in graphics hardware sales. However you cannot upgrade your Xbox and there is no way that an Xbox is running Doom 3 on its current hardware, who wants an inferior version of a game?
