    See the second link in the summary. Linus and others decided that getting new features integrated was more important than having a perfectly stable kernel. Andrew Morton's patchset (-mm) can be considered the development kernel.

    That's just terrible, and I can't help but think that it has to be on purpose.

    Devil's advocate: maybe they just didn't want to break existing sites that rely on IE's rendering quirks. Still, it's a crappy excuse when Acid2 provides a nice test suite for proper CSS behavior. It's never been easier to code for the standard.

    Absolutely. Shakespeare wrote for the commoners, crude jokes and all. But great art, whether it's literary, visual, musical, etc. has depth. Let me know when video games merit the equivalent of literary criticism.

    You are confused. I described this reaction as socially conservative. Social liberalism is epitomized by the hippies of the 1960s, not modern Democrats. Both major parties are, for the most part, socially conservative.

    I'm using simple political science terms, not pundit-spin.

    Oh, thank you. I hate all the whining about "bloat". If you want to use a minimalist WM and everything, you have dozens of options. Use them and stop whining. I'll keep using KDE with Amarok, KDevelop, etc. It's fast, and it has a hojillion useful features and a great UI. That's not bloat.

    It's nothing specific, I suppose. It just seems a little disorganized and annoying (like the multi-download prompts).

    Maybe it's just the bad aftertaste left by that unbelievably ugly Qt theme they use instead of the default. The first time I used Valknut (back when it was dcgui-qt or whatever), I abandoned it in disgust because it was so ugly. It looks worse than the default GTK1 theme. It took me a while to figure out that you could change the theme and font sizes. Is it so strange that I might want my Qt apps to use the FREAKING KDE DEFAULTS? Argh.

    That's surprising. I'll have to give it a try. However, fairly simple apps like DC++ (because Valknut still kinda sucks) are sluggish and buggy if you can get them to run at all.

    I know. Starcraft 2 would be a sure win. Instead they make some FPS. *shrug* Personally, I don't see why StarCraft is still so popular. It's a fun game, but it's not nearly complex enough to encourage deep strategy.

    Absolutely, though I thought KQ7 sucked, and QFG5 wasn't very good either. Police Quest deserves a mention too.

    And how could you bring up LucasArts without mentioning Monkey Island?! Those games were brilliant.

    I don't doubt that you have some good ideas. I have two or three fleshed-out designs myself, which would be projects on SourceForge if I had any hope of finding someone to do even rudimentary 2D graphics for them.

    Everyone has fun ideas. The trouble is first, will anything come of the idea? The market for games is interesting, because there's always room for a great game to be successful. Second, will the implementation be any fun? Good luck to you. God knows we need more games that don't suck.

    (French and Americans, especially, are totally obnoxious when it comes to languages: many of them refuse to speak any other language unless they REALLY have to).

    You have it slightly wrong. Most French people at least know a couple other languages. The vast, vast majority of Americans simply do not have any ability in any language other than English. Blame the crappy setup of the school system.

    Parents have sued to have anyhting containing peanuts removed from school menus because their children are allergic, even wanting to ban children from bringing in anything with peanuts in it in their lunches. Succeeded too, in some cases.

    I have to say, I sympathize. I have been to schools and other places where there's no indication that something contains peanuts. Almost died a couple of times because of it. There's usually no reason for a school to stop serving peanuts entirely (though a strong wiff of peanut oil can cause a reaction, mind you), but not even bothering to indicate what things contain peanuts is just fucking irresponsible. I've written some nasty letters.

    I think you have it backwards. The porn fetish is because of the taboo. Compare with western Europe. Most of the countries are much more sexually liberal, with sex education starting at an early age. The result? Fewer teenage pregnancies, no association of simple nudity with sex, and fewer problems with sex in general.

    In short, it would be difficult for America to go even further backwards unless they want to reenter the Dark Ages.
