    Yes, it was totally intentional.

It was a memory from childhood during the winter of 77-78 which was brutal in this area.

My father (who is an engineer at GEAE in Evendale) and I once discussed the fact that if such a winter was to occur again, it would cause serious problems with the epa monitors on plant emissions as they would likely need to be re-programmed because of voltage drops and memory failures.

About 2 years ago I talked to someone who had scored a "surplus" army laptop that was hardened, but had a bios password he was unable to get around. I suggested a deep freeze, and it was effective. So, now it is one of my fallback options for misbehaving electronics.

(random trivia... Zip drives which were suffering from permanent clicky-disk, regardless of changing the media, could be reset in the same way, and some of the Iomega data sheets would list freezing as a method of reset)

No, but I suppose it is probably not the best treatment for one either.

I have never worried much about my laptops being out in extreme weather because usually it is a second hand machine of someone elses that I resurrected, or just a task-based machine that is on borrowed time to begin with. (Like my laptop I use for music and web transactions on wholesale trips) I never bothered to bring them in even when temps have been well below zero out.

Then again, I always bring them back to normal operating temps slowly, to avoid condensation issues and cracking the plastic.

Either way, not the *first* thing I would try in that situation, but it has worked for me in the past.

You might think this sounds totally nuts, but I was able to bypass the bios passwords on a group of laptops by deep freezing them for 24 hours in a 0f freezer.

I took out the main battery, and apparently by dropping the temp far enough the voltage dropped to a point where it was like removing the (soldered in) on board battery.

Worked like a charm for three HP Omnibooks.

Your mileage my of course vary, and I have no idea if it only worked because the systems were far from "new" and the batteries may have already degraded somewhat.

Kroger stores with attached gas stations will give you ten cents per gallon off of your gas purchase (one per) if you purchased over $100 in groceries in the previous month. This is good for one gas purchase per $100 in purchases.

Now that can add up fast, and it is obvious that gas prices are competitive with others in the area. (I also live very close by, and we will fuel multiple cars per purchase, sometimes over $200-300 in gas)

Then I got into gaming, and because of limited desk space and then a broken arm I went to using a trackball. I love them, and prefer them to all other mouse style interfaces. Now the trackball is intuitive to me.

Then when my logitechs finally died I bought Microsoft trackball optical 5 button with intellimouse. Suddenly, with program dependant functions my mouse is my primary interface. I don't even have to think about it. Outside buttons change songs/scan in winamp, cut paste and re-size in photoshop.. etc. I adapted to that very quickly and feel handicapped on a computer where I can not assign mouse buttons to specific tasks.

My mate has also found that she (while not very technically inclined) found the changing buttons very easy to get used to in a short period of time.

All this leading to a 3-D intuitive interface. If my scroll button isn't good enough for 3 axis movement in the OS environ, then lets combine trackball and standard mouse!

When stationary, its a mouse, and the ball moves the cursor on the screen. When I move the entire unit, it moves the screen not the cursor. I think I could get used to that in about .. 20 minutes.

Not everyone lives in a city. Our cat runs free, as do most other cats in the neighbourhood. Given the fact that I live in of a small town* that's perfectly okay as long as one doesn't mind the occasional slaughtered bird on the doorstep

Yeah, as long as you don't mind the skyrocketing rates of feline leukemia, or FIV, I'm sure you feel it is just fine to let your non-native predator run free of its own accord.

Now, don't think I am totally ignorant here, I grew up on a farm. I am totally at ease with the concept of outdoor "working"/farm cats. Aside from that circumstance, I feel that cat owners should be held to the same restrictions as dog owners in regards to letting their animals roam. They should be fined when they do not follow those rules, and the fines should go to cover the operating costs of your local shelter... and maybe some to us.

I am a IWRA licensed wildlife rehabber. We specialize in squirrels, raccoons, and groundhogs. (You know, native species) A very high percentage of my intake tends to be animals that are maimed, or orphaned due to cat attacks. In, for instance, a squirrel/cat fight, the cat usually ends up wounded but okay to hunt again, while the squirrel usually ends up with a bite or two. Because of the very high rate of infection from feline bites though, odds are the squirrel will die. This is usually bad because most squirrels that will stand their ground against a cat are those defending the young in their nests, who will now die.

I understand that many people do NOT understand what we do, and why we do it... and most people who bring me 4 baby raccoons don't understand that to raise and release will cost me an average of $1000 per animal (all out of pocket), but it is a calling.

Please understand that letting your "domesticated" cat run free in urban/suburban areas is irresponsible, and leads to:
    1) More unwanted, stray, or feral cats from unfixed animals.
    2) Higher rates of diseases that affect the cats.
    3) Needless suffering of animals that the cat may attack.

Cleaning up your cats messes costs many of us a lot of time, money, and tears.

A 50% film (such as polarized) is ususally acceptable enough by most standards as to not get you pulled over, but appears opaque to the camera because of the line up of the films.

After 10 years of debilitating migraines, no doctor ever bothered to tell her that there were medicines she would not *have* to worry about keeping down when she was vomiting.
