  1. I'm not a catholic... on Microsoft Abandons Gay Rights Bill · · Score: 1

though I was raised one and I go to a catholic church (I still think the ideal of christianity in it's purest form is good). What gets me is catholics that so ardently attack things that are an affront to God, yet are very selective of the things that they speak against.

So Catholics (and other religions too, lets not just pick on em) want to preserve the sanctity of marriage... Wait, doesn't the Catholic church prohibit divorces? Yet an ungodly (no pun intended) amount of marriages end in divorce? So which is a greater threat to "marriage", homosexuals that want the same rights as us and don't want to be treated as second class citizens OR the free availablity of divorce?

So if the churches want to impose the laws of their God on all of the god fearing (and non-god fearing) populance then where will it end? Will they outlaw civil marriages? (I'm civily married but the catholic church doesn't recognize that either - can't take communion since I'm still a sinner for getting married out side the church). Will the church(es) move to outlaw divorces? Will the church move to remove civil unions? After all it is a threat to the institution of marriage to allow people to get married outside the grace of God...

I know this sounds like a logical fallacy (Slippery slope) but I'm trying to bring out a point. Religious folk are so offended by the behaviour of a few of their fellow citizens that they are willing to push through laws to prevent them their civil liberties granted by a country founded on the ideal of tolerance, however if they are so ardent about their religion why are they allowing much bigger threats go through?

I'll leave you with my first question to all the ardent catholics. What kind of birth control do you practice? :P

    Ok... Bring on the flames....

Their new memory sticks will be available in sizes larger than 32MB so one would hope that in the near future 512MB and 1GB sticks would be made available and for a reasonable price. This would definitely make the video and MP3 playback much more useful.

The main reason I've avoided Sony Digital cameras in the past has been the fact that they use the proprietary sony memory sticks (which are usually quite a bit more expensive than their SD coutnerparts). A quick look in the flash memory section will show how a 256 MB SD stick can be had for $27 while futher down the page the Sony Memory stick costs $38 (40% more).

Then again, having a game system using the same memory as their future cameras and such may help boost its popularity and acceptance. I know that if the PS2 had used standard memory sticks that I would have probably considered a Sony Camera since I would already have the media available.

I guess part of it could be the preperation or mindset of the student. If you present something as being highly doubted they may not take it openly. The question would be when should critical thinking be called into place.

I'm all for children having both sides of the argument presented in the best form (man now were calling sides...). Let them learn scientific theory in science and religion in church.

But when you instill doubt in something from the getgo (on someone that young) then you are slanting that childs beliefs. Then again there should be common sense and critical thinking classes separately in schools.

The only thing I missed the first few times was to set the language to english (kinda confusing when I had to press 'z' for yes at the load NVidia module prompt and change the language settings in alot of the games).

I was particularly impressed with Globulation 2. It's an RTS akin to Warcraft/Starcraft, different in that you don't give commands to individual units. Instead you assign building projects and set flags and units will assign themselves to these tasks. With support for 16 players I can't wait till this game catches on. It's apparently not complete, so if it's this good now I can't wait till they are officially finished with it.

"I don't really see people sitting around "retired" for thousands of years."

And this is the brilliant thing. Right now, lets say the average person lives to be 80, for a particular profession that requires a bachelors they study untill they are 21 and they retire at 65, well that knocks off 21 years of contributions (not counting any contributions in college) and 15 years at the end of their life. That means they are not producing 36 years of their life!

So out of eighty years you would put 44 years of work and developent back into society. If we have people living longer and retiring later, then this would change drastically! Someone living to 160 (twice as long) could potentially be working 120 years. That's one person putting 120 years worth of innovations, inventions, wisdom back into society. This is great!

So society educates someone 21 years and they get a huge return on their investment. Now imagine that same calculation for 1000 years. I'm sure people would retire after working x amount of years, but then again I'd see them come back into the workforce out of boredom or a need to create, serve, or whatever. Heck more people might be an Engineer for 40 years, then go into Medicine for 30 years, then use their combined knowledge to create something entirely new and unconcievable to us now.

Eventually with all these centuries old braniacs around, we would have robots doing all our work, that day all of humanity can retire! That is unitll the machines revolt...
