In theory you are correct. In practice all ISP's will not simultaneously commence paid spamhaus subscription and increase their fees. I would imagine that some ISP's may use this, either globally or as a premium value added service. Unless you are in a monopolistic market you will be free to choose a spamhaus-free (either lacking or only free zone transfers) ISP and it's assosciated lower costs.

Even then a lot of businesses may actually save money through reducing bandwidth costs due to spam. I hope they don't force those savings onto you... :)

I guess I interpret it differently. "News (as in stuff that matters) for Nerds". A combined declarative.

Semantic interpretation aside, I was trying to address the original post "Exactly how is this news for nerds? I understand that the prevailing opinion on Slashdot is hatred for the Bush administration, but I fail to see the 'nerd' aspect to this story. Politics aside, if it was a sci/fi or fantasy movie, I could understand, but this was simply a politically charged documentary about 9/11 and the Iraq war. What is next? Reviews of campaign ads?"

So I guess to use your AND example:
An item of news is: ("News for nerds") AND ("News for non-Nerds").
Should it be on /.?? Or should /. be reserved for news items that are: ("News for nerds") AND NOT ("News for non-Nerds")

That was my original question. I know my thoughts, any news that is of interest to our geek demographic should be posted. Be they political, scientific, technological, artistic, etc, etc. This is the inclusive OR belief.

  12. Assist, not preempt, the user. on University Capitulates, Switches Off Spam Filters · · Score: 3, Interesting
My approach has been to use spamd (avoid thread creation overheads) and run a base spam assessment on all mail. The assesment is stored in the header of the mail and the users can then filter/sort accordingly. Any "evil" attachments are automatically toasted, although the heuristic is very lax due to a high number of techie users.

If required they can also set a spam level on the mail server in a MySQL user/account database to automatically delete mail over the specified threshold (for accounts receiving oodles of obvious spam).

It has a nice balance between performance, security, and leaving most of the control in the hands of the users. We haven't faced extreme loads but it hasn't even raised an eyebrow over the load so far. Most importantly, no unhappy usres complaining of missing emails...

  16. Re: Jumping the Shark on Shatner May Return to Star Trek (Briefly?) · · Score: 1
Most Trek is just a touch too trite to satisfy the sci-fi fan in me, but watchable on the odd occasion.

Then along came Enterprise with it's complete lack of plot (don't worry, we'll have another "decontamination scene") and a theme song that, that, that... it almost defies description.

The way I see it, it could be used as a grounds for a justifiable homicide defense in a murder trial. Really. It is so bad it should be declared a Weapon of Mass Destruction. It makes Ipecac syrup seem like a mild regurgitant. I would rather stab out my ears with sharpened chopsticks, than voluntarily listen to it again. This song is so bad it makes you envious of the deaf - I'm pretty deaf in one ear all ready (damn chopsticks, lucky I only had one) but it keeps getting in the other one, dammit.

Then, after all that I got sucked into the current (third I believe) Enterprise series. They reworked the theme song (still abhorrent, less mass murder inducing), mostly cut out the decontamination, and got an interesting plot that is reminiscent of the Babylon 5 twists and turns. Quite enjoying it so far.
