Apple on occasion will allow users to obtain a free version a major update if they bought the computer within a certain timeframe. For instance, when the PowerMac G5 were first introduced only 10.2 was available and 10.3 was due later. So, when panther was released, powermac G5 customers got a "free" ($20 for shipping) upgrade CD.
Do news organizations usually draw up a wild hypothetical situation, go on wildy about "the benefits to everyone", and call it news without one shred of evidence or citation. Where is the leaks of backdoor meetings?....the quotes from analyst anticipating the move?...Apple announcing its yet again allowing Mac clones or selling its hardware unit? Comon...something!!! This belongs on a rumor site where they do this every day.
It doesn't have to be sensible or the cheaper solution. Just so long as the contracting company passes on some favors to the requisitioning air force officials. Don't be surprise if some of them retire and get jobs at microsoft.
What games actually use the second processor? Quake 3 was the only game I knew of that could use two processors. I believe the gain was minimal. This is probably why ID elected to drop the feature from Doom 3. Moreover, the gpu is more imporatant than the processor when it come to performance. Alot of decent gaming systems will use a mid-range processor and put extra money inro a high end video card. One thing, I would like to know is whether games would benefit from being design for 64-bit processors .
Hank...err..Bob: I am a porn addict. I didn't do homework. I would lock myself in my dorm room. I just couldn't help myself. It just kept callin' me. It just kept calling me'! Damn computer!!! Left the speakers on
Group: Here, here. Group hug
Yikes!! I'll just keep my addiction. I not sure if I want really want to hug others like me. You never know what's on their hands! ;)
I don' t find it ironic. I just call it politics. I don't think it hypocritical to want balance on both the issues. You seem to gloss of the whole outsourcing issue by relating it solely to environmental policy. There are many factors affecting the lost of manufacturing jobs in the US and it is not just EPA policy. Our high wage is also a reflection of the higher cost of living in the US. Everything from health care to gasoline is up. Most of our jobs go to countries, where either there is spartan labor laws (heard of sweat shops) or many services are provide by the government (socialism/communism). Moreover, the Bush administration has thrown out alot of environmental regulations in addition to rejecting Kyoto and we are still losing jobs. Ultimately, we simply want a way to make a living and raise a family. But, we also want this planet to be habitable for our children. Both these concerns have to be weighed and given a balanced priority. It is not being finicky but rather a consequence of the times in which we find ourselves. Our leaders should have some insight on the best direction we should take that balances those priorities. Sadly, I don't think this administration posesses that quality.
I have no problem with Congress protecting copyright holder. If you come up with something original and people like it, why shouldn't you expect that work to be protected from unauthorize distribution- whatever the means. We should protect the creative impulses that make this country great. However, for the love of Lord, why do I have to sit through these lame commercials?! Why do I need Viagra for or douche or panty liners? I don't have genital herpes!!! Why is the superbowl the only time in the year we get commercial that is actually entertaining. I submit we should abandon the whole television medium and break the bond that shackle us to our couch. Live, learn, be merry, and most important be passionate.
I know sounds easier than it is. But, one day at a time, it all it takes for freedom
Well actually, his concession means he won't challenge Ohio election results through legal means. Thus, throwing this nation into another bitter dispute like the last time with Americans deeply divided. Moreover, he did not win the national popular vote and it would also divide us if he took the election. I think he did this selflessly to move this country forward. In a testament to his strong character, this last display of grace will probably (sadly) be the only presidential thing that John Kerry will ever be able to do.
Why would porting xbox game to the Mac convince users to eschew their PCs. First, Xbox games are often water down versions of their PC cousins. These games lack features of PC games because the Xbox hardware is static and can't evolve with newer game engines like the PC can. But, Xbox games are going to make the Mac better at gaming. Is a user going to pay 2000+ for xbox quality games. Why not just buy an xbox and pay 300 at the most. Apple has it strengths and gaming is not one of them. Video are not updated on Macs as they are on PCs. Even if we had the latest games, we won't have the latest hardware. Besides, Apple is doing just fine. Look at thier stock price (50+), they are not reeling from the lack of games on the platform
Apple has been producing better quality that is not really expensive. The G5 has impove the power of thier desktop systems over the G4. The PowerMac and Xserve are price comprabale to Xeon/Opteron workstations and servers offering sometimes with better performance. The Imac is more expandable than before with faster componments(g5,hypertransport bus,SATA). Moreover, it is priced less than or equal to similarly equipped Dell (4700), Gateway (Profile 5), and HP (Pavillion) systems. The operating system is a better consumer OS than Windows XP or Linux. Then there is the iPod which has taken the music player market. I expect Apple to ride this wave for quite sometime.
Man, I already switched and its great. A company (MS) gives you less and charges you more. You are having doubts about trying a competitor? That like going to a car dealer and buying a lemon that stalls while you drive it and is easily stolen. Then, you go back to the same dealer and do it all over again. I started off with WIndows when I got into computers. I relied on it for its ubiquity even though I had to rebuild the system 4 times a year. But then I got fed up and gave a competitor a chance. It takes some work but it pays off in the end. I am typing this on 4 year old Powerbook running Panther. The hardware is fine. Why do you need the hardware to change? Just do it or go to Linux but stop asking dumbass questions
Americans didn't quite some up all the evidence at the time. For one, Iraq was devastated after the Gulf War. Most of its military was in ruins. To follow up, the sanctions prevented Iraq from selling oil except for a minimal amount. The inspections destroy alot of WMD's. The Clinton era bombings certainly got another chunk of Sadaam's military apparatus. Now, given that Iraq really didn't have much money even with the smuggling. How would it reconstitute a new nuclear program along with chemical one and biological one. Then institute a crash program in long range intercontinental ballistic missiles to deliver it all to the US. This all cost real money. If you sum it up, Sadaam would have drop dead before he could drop a bomb on us. Americans have to get that ADD check out some time.
In other words, we are paying the bulk in both lives and money because our allies and the UN won't help us to justify Bush's arrogance and folly. That about sum it up.
This is definitely classic G.W. He hasn't quite caught up with the times. He has totally bungled the "war on terror' since pre-9/11. His admininstration didn't pick up where Clinton left off. They were looking at Iraq when the planes hit the towers. They half-ass the whole Afganistan campaign and let bin Laden slip away at Tora Bora. Then, they move onto Iraq and took valueable resources away from the hunt all the while creating the perfect recruitment poster for al Quaeda and alienating most of our allies. He didn't quite comprehend that Sadaam was a vanquished threat and that there is a new player on the block using a whole new bag of tricks. I believe he had to prove to himself that he could do better than his dad against Hussein. (Silly rabbit)
I haven't watched Star Trek in years. I haven't seen the last two movies, the last seasons of DS9 and Voyager, and not a single episode of Enterprise. I have been Star Trek out for quite some time and no longer make it a priority to watch the shows. I agree give it a hiatus for maybe a decade. Then see if the countless reruns and online game will generate a hunger in a new generation of trekkies as well as the old.
1. Substitute the ctrl key with command (apple) key when using keyboard shortcuts. In a Macintosh, the command key is use mostly with keyboard combinations.
2. The Applications folder take the place of the Program Files folder.
3. The ctrl plus mouse click simulate the right click in windows. (largely unneeded despite what others say)
4. Command-K or Connect to server in the Go menu brings up the network browser (Network Places in Windows XP). You can share files with any PC, Mac, or Linux or anything else.
5. The dock which is at the bottom replaces the start menu and toolbar in windows. Put all you shortcuts there by simply dragging the application to it. Also minimized windows will disappear to there
6. The Macintosh will require you to buy all new software. Mac OSX cannot run Windows software without an emulator which is expensive and slow. It gets real expensive if you are maintaing both PC and Macs. So, if you are happy with the Mac, stick with it and drop the PC's!
Last but not nearly least. I notice Windows users typically try to quit programs in Mac OS by simply closing the windows. But this is wrong, the programs remain in memory. Hit Command-Q to fully quit the programs
Dell basically sells linux with optiplex workstations and latittude with Linux only via special which is hidden in back pages of their website. But if you go through their home/home office section, you don't see the linux mentioned. Ultimately, I dont think its becuase Redmond is pulling their strings, but rather it is too costly to support for little demand. Look past the basic install and factor in all the bundled software, drivers, help software and support. Some of this is written in-house and some is rebranded but all only support windows. Dell would have to extend extra expense supporting a linux alternative which would drive up cost of their systems. This would hurt their bottom-line in the end.
Looks like Apple is dropping the ADC port. None of these displays have it listed in the specs. It was one of those Apple quirks where they basically went their own and to hell with rest of the industry. However, it was a convenient connector that got rid of all the wires (if you had a power mac).
your right. It would be nice if apple would churn out faster systems more frequentlyThough. the long answer is that Apple is highly glorified OEM. This means that if IBM or Motorola has trouble producing faster processors or keeping production up, then it means Apple can't produce faster macs. Basically, Apple is at the mercy of forces it can't influence. However, the macintosh will perform well thoughout its lifetime with little maintenance. In contrast, the Wintel PC will slow to a crawl if expense and time are not put into maintenance (defragging, getting a virus scan, cleaning the hard disk, etc.). Maybe that knowledge will bring a little comfort to our long wait.
...to get MacOSX on X86. My GOD!!! All those pesky slashdotters haunting the apple forum with their bemoaning the lack of MacOSX support for X86. They couldn't just go out and buy a Mac. They had to start open source project.

The display lineup took a price cut ($999 for 20")

Agreed. Thinkpads are awesome. We have one here which is solid. I hate to see the world where Thinkpad are not made by IBM.

When you need cover fire to plant a frag on some fool's camp spot, that crappy voip over is 100X better than typing.

There is a new addage to the old cliche.
Where there stubbornness, there is a way.
My hat's off to you gentlemen
