  1. Re:How about... on A Useful Grammar Checker? · · Score: 1

We wouldn't need string literals if C was the global language, you could just call the point you were referring to.

Unfortunately C has grammar problems of its own though, you'd probably see Americans continuing their tradition for shoddy grammar by slapping the 'goto' keyword everywhere.

  4. Re:Cash CoW indeed on Blizzard's Warcraft Booty · · Score: 1
Claiming Blizzard haven't broken even is obviously complete rubbish. Lets say they had 100 programmers and artists for a full 5 years (they probably had less). At an average yearly salary of $50,000, over 5 years, that's 25 million dollars. Assuming it costs them $10,000,000 a month for bandwidth and servers (will be much lower), it's still going to take them less than 1 month to break even.

Yes there are some extra distribution/shipping/support costs etc. but these are more than met by the initial income from the boxed game, which will also net Blizzard a vast, vast, profit, probably enough to meet development costs from box sales alone. I think it's pretty clear that even using very pessimistic figures, WoW is a huge Blizzard cash cow.

Well I guess it depends on what you're selling, or your willingness to accept Paypal payments. I've personally sold around 50 items on eBay, and have been the victim of a reversed payment once, as well as having to refuse to trade with bad buyers on 3/4 occasions which I noticed were obviously hacked accounts after researching.

And that doesn't even include the various scam emails I get with auctions running from various shady types offering to buyout for ridiculous prices providing I send the item immediately/trade for nonexistent stuff etc.

It's true that technology can, in some cases, be a great equaliser. I'd hope that most Slashdotters would agree that there's a beauty to the real world sometimes which can't really be matched by looking at a computer screen.

Maybe as suggested, one day you will have a high paying job where you sit for hours on end staring at a computer screen, but will you be any happier then the guy who's delivering your pizza? Have computers in your life, but don't let them be your life.

Disclaimer: I'm not even sure I agree with my own comment, I'm in an odd mood.

Why exactly are pseudo randomly generated (e.g. /dev/urandom) numbers not good enough for your purpose? I can't think of a situation where these numbers, when generated from a suitably random state (for example after some random mouse movements etc.) would not be sufficient. Much as geeks like to discuss ridiculously impractical ways of generating randomness, I really can't see a situation where this would be required. If anyone knows differently and has an example of how a code was cracked due to problems with a cryptographically strong PRNG, I'd be interested to hear it.
