Just to clarify Obama was given the peace prize for his Cairo Speech in 2009 known as "A New Beginning". Although there may have been people who deserved the prize more than Obama, that speech did have an important impact on western relations with Muslim leaders around the world. You may not agree with their decision but your assertion that Obama had not done anything seems myopic.

  8. Automated Robotic Systems can give us more on Obama Choosing NOT To Go To the Moon · · Score: 1

I have a great fondness for the human spaceflight program, especially the ISS which has given us some useful engineering and science. For the most part however the human spaceflight program appears to be for PR reasons. And that does have value as well but I think the real debate is what direction do we want to spend the bulk of the money going into NASA.

Probes like Cassini and landers like Phoenix, Spirit & Opportunity have given us much more science at a fraction of the cost. They have allowed us to understand the Earth (currently our only source survival), our solar system, and the greater universe in detail that we could not have gotten by trying to send humans everywhere. It seems that it would be wise for us to continue to send out as many probes and robotic systems to every planet, moon, and asteroid in our solar system to gain deeper knowledge about their makeup. If we are thinking in terms of human exploration of space we need to know what is out there before we start going ourselves. It makes sense cost wise not to mention in terms human safety.

And really the bottom line right now is getting to the science and engineering benefits. The AI research that goes into NASA alone has direct benefits that we can all enjoy. It would be nice to see a century of robotic exploration followed by an effective human exploration program.

For those who suggest that this is a matter of survival, I would agree on a very long time scale. But if we can not ecologically maintain Earth, which is rich with life, there is no way we are going to survive on a planet that is lifeless and or alien to our biology.

It hurts to let go of human space flight for now, but it might be the smarter thing to do in the long run.

  11. Augmented Reality on Jacket Lets You Feel the Movies · · Score: 1

This seems to be a perfect technology for augmented reality applications. One of the problems of interacting with avatars in a augmented reality space is that you can't have any actual physical contact, only audio & visual. This could provide that next layer of interaction that could make the experience something unique. Yeah I know many are thinking of finding significant others (or AI significant others) for something like this. However even beyond that this type of technology is exactly what the AR industry needs. If I'm having a meeting with someone on the other side of the globe a glove version of this could allow for a simple hand shake. That might not seem that important but as human animals we rely a great deal on physical interactions. Being an IT person that spends a great deal of time sitting in front of a screen it seems paramount that someday we detach ourselves from the current computer interaction model (keyboard, mouse, screen). I'm very curious to see the results of the study. Nice work, hope to see it in use!

Hum... In regards to the analogy of rape to negotiations on weapons proliferation: There is something missing with this statement and much of the conversation around it. Is this a useful analogy? Does it really speak to any critical point of space based weapons proliferation? Why not just actually speak to the issue at hand? The linking of these two subjects does not seem obvious to me. As well I feel like you are taking the experience of rape victims as your own in order to attack a political figure. I find that manipulative and disrespectful.

And here is why, I do not see Obama saying this. I hear his message and it is a different message than his church. I also have heard him say I cannot separate myself from my own past. And he condemned the hate speech. That to me is the sign of an adult, and someone who takes responsibility for their actions and tries to change. I can understand why someone would not want to vote for him, but I see by his words and actions that he is genuine and intends to do his best to serve us as a nation. Now we should all go vote!

  19. Hippocratic Oath for IT on SF Not an Exception In Giving IT Too Much Control · · Score: 1

I've come across this situation several times in my IT career. I've spoken with my co-workers about these types of issues. In order for us to really function we need to have a type of Hippocratic Oath. Don't get me wrong power is power and abuse is abuse no matter what people state. But taking an Oath at least sets reasonable expectations on all sides. As technology becomes a more vital portion of our day to day living that power needs to be recognized and dealt with. There have been several times when I've informed my boss of the level of dependence they had on me as the holder of the key's to the kingdom. They're eyes always get very wide when I explain as I hand over the keys that the next person to take this role up has total power over the company. The execs should understand this, and IT should communicate fidelity to the execs... I'm not saying that fidelity should allow for the execs to abuse the IT team but a clear understanding is a must. As well if there are people who ice their own company out they should loose something so they can't move on to another job and do the same thing. If the IT Hippocratic Oath was backed up by a guild or a license that can be taken away it would help. Sincerely, end15

  20. Entertainment Unions on Video Game Actors Say They Don't Get Their Due · · Score: 1

This is much more about unions vs. corps than lowly worker vs. lowly worker. True some actors make obnoxious amounts of money and there's no way to justify it. That said most actors do not make a living wage. Second acting is a very difficult job, and I would be willing to bet that most people talking it down have never really done it. I'm not saying actors are saving the world but what they do is going to be more and more important to gaming. Think of how many games just died or became total mockery because of the terrible acting. Video games are becoming the next medium of entertainment like television, film, and theater before it. At some point all of the workers including the programmers need protection and a bigger slice of the pie. I suspect over the next 10 years we'll see these changes happen.

  23. Orwell and the modern state on Google Street a Slice of Dystopian Future? · · Score: 3, Insightful

IMHO we already live in a dystopian future. It's not exactly Orwellian in nature at this point and it seems that a more critical distinction would need to be made. I don't think that Orwell's control systems were simply about technology, it was much more about how the state used the technology. In San Francisco there are already cameras all over the place. Everything we do is already tracked. Your cell phone has a GPS built into it that can track you at all times. That tracking information may never disappear and could be used now or any time in the future. I'm not saying throw your cell phone out but be aware of what you already have committed to. That said I think it's important that we recognize how the technology is currently used, how it's been abused in the past, and how it could be abused in the future. In the case of 1984 Winston Smith did not have access to the technology, he was only subject to it. In our case we are subjects of the technology but we still have access to it. That alone is an important distinction, and belies a very different program (we're more interesting to marketers than spies). I think it's important to questions Google or any other entity that further erodes privacy in any manner. Who's using it? How is it being used? Can we choose to opt out? When and where can we choose to opt out? Is this patently invasive technology or not? For instance when the NSA hires/forces/steals Googles information on citizens domestically then the use issue becomes something important for the republic to question. I think it's important to get away from our impulsive reactionary response to "Orwellian Future" and start thinking critically about what we are really dealing with. Orwell would write a very different book if he were alive today, and we should start thinking in those terms.
