Did you read the review? He likes a lot of things about this program, but his major gripe is that the RAW display is not up to par with the FREE RAW plugin for photoshop. His point is well made - if this doesn't produce the best image quality - what's the point of the app in its current state?
I think the killer app will be HD. I checked out the specs on the HD version of the Eye TV, and I was stunned. According to the box, you need a dual G5 as a minimum requirement to play full 1080i.
If this new box can do HD and remain price competitive, its gonna kick all kinds of ass. Let's face it, standard TV is on the way out. Remember Apple's "Year of HD"?
Slashdot editors seem to be taking money to run public relations press releases as stories.
This article has been making the geek sites for a few days now. I first heard about it on digg. Y'know, there isn't an infinite amount of interesting tech stories out there, there are slow days. Maybe the submitter did some copying and pasting, and you *know* that the editors don't investigate the submissions. But the editors never claimed they would. I'm 100% sure this was not an advertisement. Is there an order form in TFA?
I agree that the 12 inch powerbook screen needs to be updated, and I have a feeling it's about to change to a widescreen format. But iBooks are meant for students, and doing basic tasks. If you need more screen get a Powerbook. The last revision of the 15 inch powerbook saw an increase in the screen resolution. I have an older tiBook, and I love the screen as-is.
Don't forget about an external monitor through DVI. I recently went laptop shopping (I needed an XP machine), and I couldn't find a laptop with DVI other than the Powerbook. With an Intel CPU and Windows Dual Boot, thats gonna be a hard laptop to resist.
Good for you. I went Laptop shopping today, and there are no Vaios on my list anymore. They've got some nice products, but they won't be getting one cent from me.
I'm a Lost fan, but I missed last week's episode because I moved and my Tivo was offline. How do I catch-up? This is perfect for me. I don't need to buy or rent the DVDs for 1 measly episode. And, I'd have to wait for the end of the season to get that anyway. Bittorent? Never seems to work for me, and hey this iTunes method is legal. I'm so tired of the "It doesn't work for ME! It's not good enough!" posts. It *is* good enough. They sold a million in less than a month. They don't need to go out of their way to please a minority of customers.
"... companies can't be loyal to their employees and remain competitive."
It doesn't have to be this way. Do some reading on Costco and you might change your mind. They are very profitable, and treat their employees with respect and pay them decently, with good benefits. Costco refuses to play the bottom line game. They have a maximum profit margin on all products (%15), and are a good citizen in the community.
I can forgive Apple for discontinuing Firewire on the new iPods, but I can't forgive them for not including the charger in the box. I understand that the USB cable doubles as a charger, but I want to charge it in a hotel room, friends's house, etc. How much could that little charger possible cost Apple? 2-3 bucks? I'll stick with my 3rd gen until it dies, then I hope my existing accessories will still work on the newer iPods.
The pics show a much bulkier PSP. It's almost impossible to pocket a PSP now, forget about it with this add-on. The article has some interesting points, 4 GB is the largest capacity supported by the PSP's OS, and inside the gadget is a run of the mill 4GB microdrive that can be swapped with Compact Flash cards (better battery power?). They didn't reveal the battery impact of this gadget, its still in "testing" phase.
C'mon, man. Most large GPL'd projects are supported financially by some corporate interest(s). Sure, the code is out there. That doesn't mean the project will be a continued sucess, or that future development won't suffer. If Oracle drops the GPL'd version, the DB is in a precarious situation. You don't think everyone using the DB has their own team that compiles and develops it, do you?
Slashcode is as good as it needs to be, and no better. It serves millions of web pages each month (day?). I'd be glad to put a site of this popularity on my resume.
Come to think of it, if other apps were "as good to be, and no better", there would be a lot of companies saving good money right now.
I have an upcoming project, and I'm deciding on what equipment to get. I want HDTV, and I would like to record it, just like standard TV. The HDTV PVR from DirecTV costs 700 bucks.
My choices are: Pay DirecTV, or build a system. The best HDTV card for over the air seems to be the ATI HDTV Wonder. It is recognized by the latest version of XP Media Center Edition, and can record the HDTV feed. But, you need a Direct X 9.0 compatible video card to run the ATI card at all.
For those of you sticking with MythTV, that's cool. It doesn't easily get TV listings, whereas the MCE solution gives you everything in the box, and there's no DRM. I say again, NO DRM.
If you guys have a better solution for me I'd like to hear it, but I'd like to record HDTV, and I don't know of anyone else, including Beyond TV, supporting HDTV yet.
Why did Tom's Hardware choose MCE? Simple, its a great product. Read the online reviews, I haven't seen a bad review yet.
Just thinking about that makes me head explo[NO CARRIER].

Video iPod Oct 12?

*yes* there is a reason to use Xvid over h.264. my ipaq is a 300 mhz unit. It doesn't have enough CPU strength to run a high quality h.264 feed. Besides. Xvid is gives me essentially DVD quality in a sub 500MB file.
If the iPod is to play h.264, the CPU is gonna be very fast, and it is going to be an expensive unit!
I watched 2 movies on my iPaq on a flight from LA to Paris. It was actually very nice. I have only 1 GB of storage, but that fits 2 divx movies perfectly.
I doubt that Apple will support divx, using H.264 instead. My question, who has compared these formats in a 500 MB size limit? Will Apple give you a utility to convert your DVDs? (probably not). Also, the question of battery life is important. An SD card doesn't spin inside. That hard drive on the iPod is going to burn a lot of battery power, and get hot to the touch.
The video iPod is inevitable. My questions are mainly to how we will fill them without an Apple Movie Store. I would expect the release of this iPod to coincide with the release of a movie store.
I test drove that car. It kicks ass. Especially compared to Civic/Corolla. We tried it because Consumer Reports liked it. We ended buying an Accord, but that little Mazda is a *nice* car, and yeah the MPG statistics are very impressive.
It's not street vs highway mileage. It's "stop and go" versus running free. Hybrids are great in stop and go traffic, because you're running off the battery. If you drive an open road, a Corolla or similar small car would make more sense.
Part of the perceived problem is that the traditional mileage ratings don't apply to hybrids very well. Hybird drivers fleeing from the Hurricanes (on the ultra-congested roads) got much further away than the others, because their fuel supply was lasting 12-13 hours, IIRC.
Well, since you asked what *I* would bring, I would bring some Lucinda Williams records along with whatever supplies I took. Hew songs extensively canvas the Louisiana spirit, and It would remind me of what a great part of America that really is. Start with "Crescent City" off her self titled album.

Just a thought, but ... a powerstrip?
"They quickly discarded suggestions such as Black Monday.."
My band would have loved that choice! Finally we'd be part of a media frenzy!

"PC LOAD LETTER" - What the fuck is that?

I agree. We will also outlaw makeup, newspapers and cellphones.

As long as you use DVD Shrink to play it the first time!
