    There's always the Fark method.

At Fark, a small team of "editors", if you will (drunk people, if you won't), select news items based on weirdness, stupidity, or popularity to post to the front page for the freeloaders.

However, there is a way to see every single submission to the queue on Fark- TotalFark. The catch? The user pays $5/month to do so.

One would think that would seem kind of backwards, but it actually works out well. TotalFarkers take over threads that won't hit the main page(s) (redlit threads) to discuss an issue that is on the main page (a greenlit thread). The overhead tends to weed out most, if not all, trolls in discussions, which leads to more fulfilling (and more to the point) debates.

Aside from that, some TotalFarkers also take it upon themselves to alert admins to dupe threads, which is why Fark has such a low number of duplicates (when compared to, say, Slashdot.) They also will alert admins about links with spyware or spam links (to the point that Fark has added an "Alert an admin" function to each individual thread).

The downside/upside to this is that the regular posting TotalFark users have become a much tighter-knit community, and you see a lot of threads asking for day-to-day advice and complaining about various (personal) problems. Since Fark is a non-serious site, the users revel in this stuff, but it would make it harder to have serious discussions about technical situations. Can you imagine trying to find information about the latest wireless specs amongst such submissions as "hey guyz wut should i use for my pc" and "Download this awesome new web client! We swear it's not adware!"?

While Slashdot may get stories a bit slower or with bad synopsi, the user comments and heavy story filtering make it a site worth visiting.

    Disclaimer: I am a TotalFarker.

  3. I disagree on Internet to Blame for Lack of Close Friends · · Score: 1

I've been a regular internet user since... oh, probably 1998 or so. Back then it was just using chat rooms at Yahoo! and working on a website on Fortunecity. Now-a-days I'm more heavily into it, participating on multiple forums covering a range of issues as well as working on my own websites (as well as others.)

However, I believe I have a rather large social network. The only thing is that it's all online. I am a rather shy person in real life, and somewhat afraid of meeting new people, so I only have two or so actual friends. However, the anonymity offered by the internet gives me an extra layer of protection- if I fuck up somewhere, I just need to leave and come back with a new handle and e-mail address, and no one is the wiser. It allows me to completely start over if I feel the need.

Not that I've had to do so. Through my many stints on various sites, some gone, some still here, I have amassed quite a few online friends that I can talk to, some about important things. I would say that the Internet is a massive benefit to my social network growth.

Now, I may be the exception rather than the rule. I know a lot of people who prefer face-to-face communication over mail or IM. If all that's happening is discussion, I really don't see the difference. In fact, if all that's happening is discussion, I much prefer IM over face-to-face chat or even a phone call- you don't have to repeat yourself, you can "talk" while someone else is talking and not get in the way, and if you have to do something for a few minutes, you can simply scroll through the chat window to see what you were talking about when you get back (assuming you have some short-term memory problems, like I do.)

Regardless, while Average Joe may be intimidated by these elctro-ma-whos-its, those like myself, who are withdrawn, or those who are picked on in school are given new social life thanks to the internet, which can be a saving grace. If I hadn't had the internet to fall back on during my years of being bullied in school, I probably would have snapped.

For instance, with the tactical RPG, you wouldn't have to wait for someone else's turn to finish before making your commands. You'd do it all on the DS and the game would execute the instructions in either order of entry or user order, depending on how the game works. This would allow each player a greater advantage by not allowing the other players to see what s/he is planning, yet spectators could still get in on the game.

I think DS/Wii connectivity is great. However, with all that the Wii offers, I don't see as big of a benefit as the Gamecube/GBA link may have been.

Plus, look at the Gamecube/GBA connection. We have... what, six games that use it? And most, if not all, are made by Nintendo? Some other games offer bonus stuff if you connect two games via the cable, but that's it.

Not that you can't do great stuff with a Wii/DS connection. Think of having a tactics RPG game with three of your friends. The upper screen shows stats, the lower screen uses the stylus to place troops or whatever, and you could use the microphone to shout instructions that need to be quickly executed. Or how about Tetris Wii, where your next piece is available only on your DS screen?

Plus, depending on how they set it up, you might be able to use a DS and a Wii for the same player, though that would get complicated, fast.

I wouldn't make it a main component, but I'm sure they'll find a few creative ways to use the functionality. Besides, if you made it a major part, you'd have to make an ad campaign for that. The DS slogan is "touch is good".

Do you really want signs that say "Touching your Wii is good"? (Yes, I went there.)

Anyway, the pricing sounds great for the old games. It will probably translate to $5 and $10. Does anyone know what they refer to? The article seems to be lacking if that will be the SNES and N64 (respectively), or NES/SNES and N64, etc.

    2) Choose one of the levels where you battle on Fox's ship
    3) Have everyone shout "SNAKE'S ON A PLANE"
    4) Profit/giggle madly

Jokes aside, this looks awesome. Well worth the wait for online connectivity.

One thing I don't see a lot of comments about is the "Super Smashes" (my term, not theirs). If you watch the trailer, at one point Mario grabs a sphere with the SSB logo on it, and does a little "charge up" animation. After which, he unleashes either a HUGE flame on everyone, or unleashes a thousand flame punches (I couldn't really tell). Kirby is also shown charging, and then we see Mario in a pot. Link appears to have some sort of mutli-slash that creates Triforce images around the character.

Most likely, these would all be activated by the "Super Smash Sphere" (again, my term) which would be a very rare item. These look to have a lot of potential.

Even so, my little fanboy heart was elated with what I saw. Now that I see the Wiimote in actual use, it looks easier than I thought it might be, and can't wait to get my hands on it myself. The addition of a little hand strap to make sure it doesn't fly out of your hand after hours of gaming is really smart.

One thing I'm curious about is periphenalia. The ability to attach something to the Wiimote opens a load of possibilities for third-party add-ons. I imagine it won't be long before someone makes something that allows the Wiimote-Ninchuck connection to be wireless, as well. Also, the Wiimore might use AA batteries. If it does, this will open the doors for all those companies that made rechargeable battery packs for the GBA and GBC.

Finally, I'm curious about missing games. Where's Pikmin? How about Harvest Moon? I think that those two games would be able to put the Wiimote functionality to particularily good use.

Also, I'd like to see a "Dance Dance Wiivolution", where you have the dance pad and a Wiimote in either hand. Not only do you have the foot steps, but you would wave your hands with waves on the screen. Light would have just basic waving motions, and Hard would have you moving in specific directions. I would still prefer that Nintendo choose something else (or just switch back to "Revolution"), but something that others stated yesterday made sense: Nintendo could call it "ShitInABox" and it would still have great games, which is the entire reason you buy any console.

I'm still worried about public reaction, though. The foreign-sounding name, combined with the various jokes and sound-alike meanings, could be enough to throw off the non-gaming public, the parents and adults and girls that Nintendo is supposedly trying to reach with this console.

The overall reaction to this will likely turn out just like Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. People will initially hate, hate, hate it. ("This isn't what they gave us at E3 2000!" "Revolution was so much cooler!") Then we'll look at some screens and play reviews in magazines and soften up a bit. ("Well, the art does look good..."
