  1. Able to leverage their brand this way. on Nokia Losing its Cell Phone Dominance · · Score: 3, Insightful
Everyone seems to be complaining that 35 phone models seem to be far too many. However Nokia has to offer phones for different providers to be able to compete. They've always offered one or two CDMA phones and they continue to do so, an increase here would likely account for the high number of new phones.

However, Nokia is a smart company. What do they care if they have 35 models? The average (not anyone reading slashdot) Cell phone user cares about two things: One, the phone looks good to them, and right now this means flip phones. And two, the phone has the features they want. That second request is going to be different for every person.

It is this diversity that can help nokia. A soccer mom who calls a max of 10 minutes a day and a corporate executive who needs a high capacity battery are two totally different segments of the market. However the Nokia brand can keep both by releasing phones taylored for each.

Lastly, you'd be surpirsed how many millions of people hate learning a "new" phone. I personally can't stand nokia phones, they're bulky, have features I never need, and I can't seem to get used to the menus. But I hear from everyone i know with one that "they're so easy to use." And if you know how to use one nokia, you know how to use them all. That's their best kept secret.

So you're helping reduce their losses by $150, even if they aren't ever going to break even on console sales alone.

Yes, but the skills they learn could be used to design games of their own. I mean Bejeweled has made that little company quite a few million dollars, and its not the latest and greatest in 3d gaming.

With some vision and the needed knowelege someone in this program could go far. I understand that a degree in game design is overkill to create a game like bejeweled, but there's more to designing games than doom 3.

  8. This is exactly why they've lasted so long. on Is eBay Worse Than Early Sears Catalogs? · · Score: 1
By remaining a (somewhat) independent third party in the whole buy/sell community ebay is able to keep impartiality. Many, many alternatives to ebay's policies have been discussed here on slashdot, and I feel nothing short of a complete escrow service, with ebay received money and goods and shipping out from their central location after each is received, will be enough. Of course if ebay were to move to such a model they would never be able to do the volume they do now, and seriously, its all about volume when it comes to making money in this situation.

Why wouldn't a slightly modified system work? Because as it stands now there is a decent enough balance between sellers and buyers to allow for an expectation of trust, swing it either way and one side will abuse the other. Making it too easy to withold payment, or return items, and buyers will either say they never got the items, say they unconditionally hate the items, or just plain don't like the items. Make buying too easy and people will bid and not pay.

Sure you can get ripped on ebay. But you can just as easily get ripped at the mall if you don't know the ropes. Three main ways to protect yourself. 1) If it seems too good to be true, it is! don't buy a $2000 laptop from anyone for $50 unless you don't care about the $50. 2)Always buy shipping insurance! it keeps you and the seller both protected. I'm amazed people will spend $600 and neglect the $5 insurance. 3)Don't pay cash. There's no trail and you'll be hosed if you are getting ripped off.

I've been doing just this for almost the last two years with my sony T665C. I paid $300 for it, but you could find one on ebay for $50-100 and it has a great screen, decent battery life, USB connectivity, and even plays mp3's. This way you can get more for your money. No need for overkill, a new PDA means wasted money if all you need is to read ebooks.

I'll second this. I've used Tax Act version dating back to 1998 and have been nothing but thrilled with their product. One of the best things they ever did was when I bought the 2002 version last year they sent the 2001 version with a note that said "here's a full version of last year's tax software in case you forgot to file or would like to compare our software to your previous year's software" I ended up needing to go back and do some 01 taxes, and the full version they sent was indeed just that, no strings attached.

I don't know if you've seen the teenagers of this new generation, but they are even less able to hold a coherent though than I was at their age. Shuffling music is their way of keeping things new and intersting.

Secondly, albums that kids listen to suck. Shuffling means you get good songs all mixed up, and not a bunch of crappy ones and then a good one.
