  2. Re:Clue to RIAA on The Effect of Pirated CDs · · Score: 1

About 3 years ago (when you could still buy singles), I saw a christina aguilera single on sale at borders for $18, and *GASP*, it came with a whole nother crappy song!

People dont want to pay $18 for a 15 song album, but who in their right mind would pay $18 for 2 songs?!

  3. But on The Thermal Paste Revolution · · Score: 2

How does it compare to water cooling, and when would something like this become mainstream enough for chip-makers to build their hardware around it?

Seems like a promising technology, just might take a while to get here.

  7. Uhhh.. on Big Blue to take on Pixar? · · Score: 1

We slashdotted a site that is using IBM's bandwidth?

Just shows you how much faith they have in threshold digital that they don't even give them enough bandwidth to withstand 200,000+ geeks with broadband all connecting at the same time :)

  8. Well on Your Own Linux Wireless Access Point · · Score: 1, Insightful

Technically theres no difference between a linux based and windows based access point. Sure you could argue for stability, but the only thing that could bring it down is a system crash (which doesnt really happen in windows unless you're doing something on it other than routing data) or a line failure. He's probably just making it to show Linux's 'supperiority' over windows. When someone claims that they can get 10kb/s over windows with a linux server, they entire Linux community goes crazy.

Note that I am not Linux bashing here, I like and use linux all the time, I'm just pointing out that there is no real reason to make these other than bragging rights.

    *snip from website*

Well, it's happened: I've been Slashdotted. Which I suppose is good news. But the poor little 600 mhz pentium under my desk hosting Darwinian Poetry can't handle the strain. Connectivity may be bad until the Slashdot crowd backs off. Sorry.

Stop flaming for a few minutes and get past the second paragraph of the article, and you'll see that it has nothing to do with your OS war.

This has nothing to do with windows/linux, its just an account of what this guy went through with an unscrulpulous company, likely headed by one person. Next time read the article instead of taking one line and blowing it out of proportion just to get your insightful points.

  13. Re:if the french had created e-mail... on French Government Bans Term 'E-Mail' · · Score: 1

Actually the US government did not say that you cannot say french fries in government. The term "freedom fries" was probably made by a bunch of far-rightwingers who are unaware that "frenching" is a manner of cooking food, not named for the country.

The closest thing we have to the so-called culture police is the RIAA.

There was a lawsuit a while back by some idiot woman who threw her shoe at the TV when she saw the ad.

Must have either been very stupid or live near a nuclear testing ground, as the cockroaches on those commercials were HUGE on my 25" tv. Besides, why would you sue because you threw a shoe at your tv? Very hard to knock a tv off a table with a shoe.

  16. Re:Damn - fooled again on Nationwide Class Action Filed Against DoubleClick · · Score: 1

i for one wouldn't mind if it shut down double click forever

I wouldn't either, as the sites they are linking to with their fake messages most of the time contain spyware, including the nasty marketscore "internet speed booster" that sends anything you do, including purchases and logins to their hosting sites.

Besides, if you look at their site, they advertise faster speeds with a 56k modem at only a few sites. Now I'm no genius but wouldn't they have enough bandwidth to max out a 56k connection?

  18. When was this going to happen? on BitTorrent Community Running For Cover? · · Score: 1

Because it certainly isnt now. I ran a test DL of 2 music CDs with my cable connection which is maxed out at 150kb/s transfer, and they both were done in just under an hour, averaging 120kb/s transfer rates. For right now, I don't see torrents going anywhere.

  19. Re:CD Burners on DirecTV Sues Anyone Who Bought Smartcard Reader? · · Score: 1

Not neccesarily. If I understand it right the smartcard programmer/reader was created for the specific purpose of getting those PPVs free. CD burners are not used exclusively for duping music CDs (though RIAA lawyers somehow thing it differently). I might be wrong on this, but just my 2c.
