I see a lot of valid arguments against each new DRM mechanisim that comes out, but nobody seems to be offering an alternative.

The alternative that seems quite obvious and would work for me, would be for them to stop being such greedy bastards, and reduce the price of an album to something more reasonable. A new album in Aus is $30, and its this price that's the major driving force as to why I look at other ways of getting the music I like (often including just listening to the radio instead). If they could make the price more reasonable (say $AU10-$AU15) it would have an impact upon me right now. Currently the price outweighs the amount of dicking around it takes to get it elsewhere, and as soon asthe price is even in the ball park I will happilly start walking into a music store again.

Honestly its like fruit'n veg sometimes, when a particular variety goes stupidly expensive I dont buy it (I select another variety or another type of food altogether). When I go shopping next, if its a price I think is acceptable, I'll buy it.

You can do this now. If you have a windows based mobile phone you can use skype. You don't have to wait for MS to sell you something.

All you need is a wifi spot.

I currently have a Telstra Wireless broadband account (i live in Bris) at home, does this mean if i had a windows type phone i could drop my mobile carrier all together (or make it very, very cheap)?

I always assumed that to use this kind of thing via mobile I would still have to pay a mobile provider, and _then_ pay a 'data' charge for all of the WAP data I use (to make skype calls).

    Does this sound right?

  14. some old school Quake (in AU) memories follow... on Old School Gameplay Collides With Modern Graphics · · Score: 1

We setup one of the early (not the first, but early) quake servers back in the day, named the 'Thunderdome' in Australia. We were running an ISP 'down in the basement' (32 x 32kb modems and a T2 net cnxn! w00t!) and started the clan Bananas In Pyjamas (BiP) (hence Rastan[B2]). When alot of clans started out, it was all fearful, 'death and killing' type clan names... so we thought wtf, called ourselves Bananas In Pyjamas and painted our skins bright yellow, with blue and white pyjamas.

man good, good days... our own server, a fat net pipe for other servers (we didnt like dealing out punishment on our own server because it was just _unfair_) lots and lots of fun into the wee wee hours! Organised clan wars with TS (tormented souls), BW (black widows) - my mate ran the BW server stuff out of a uni server, and others... I remember when GameSpy first came out and it was a godsend!

Just when you think u _might_ be getting bored... all the variants came out - runes, ctf, new maps... Ahhh the days... I had alot of fun playing quake 1, qw, and ctf!

three words for anyone that needed something settled - 'D' 'M' 'FOUR'!

Anyone remember GibCon (aka BigCon) one of the first largish quake tourneys' held in sydney? Adam (Raver[B1]) and I drove down from the gold coast, they had a sooper duper, one of a kind, 1 Gb switch - which kept fkn falling over all the time, much to the hate of the crowd. But like any good LAN of the day, warez and porn passed around a plenty! (I remember being ousted kinda early and drinking some mix of scotch in a macas cup all night!)

I have photos from another tourney in Bris with Tank[ZX], seven[cant remember clan ???], and heaps of other old school quakers...

I miss those days, the game play was faaantastic...

Rastan[B2] - Rastan rough on roughnecks!

P.S - the server didn't last that long because a few months later when our monthly bill went from $12K to $33K, the boss was like WTF, and we were like - 'geeez we don't know it must be a fault at their end!'. needless to say the 'fault' corrected itself after we sadly shutdown the server.

One reason there's a whole lot more windows 'guys' out there is because backyarders can now get paid $50/hr to install anti-spyware on the average joes 'slow' computer. A friend of mine has been doing this for over a year.
Walk in, install Adaware and AVG Anti Virus (both free for non-corporations), run them, have a coffee then walk out $50 (or more) richer.

The most annoying feature for me was not being able to go back and 'reselect' the word in the text message I am typing. For instance if you are typing quite quickly and forgot to change a word and have typed another word after it, you have to go back and delete the word you can re-choose.
As for music... bring it on, I currently use a 256 MB player for jogging, a 20GB iRiver for longer distances (riding, busing etc) and of course a mobile. In fact my mp3 player and phone are the 2 most commonly carried pieces of my arsonal, if they could be combined I would be stoked.
