The power to inform the masses pales in comparison against the power to persuade the masses. Ideally, one would responsibly use such a power, but that's rarely proven to be the case.
As far as slashdot politics go, coverage of negative republican news vs. coverage of negative democratic news isn't so much a matter of bias as it is a matter of fact. A republican president pushed to make war happen, not a democratic one.
"Groundbreaking" is such a horrible descriptor for works like this. Music, movies, etc are very rarely so new that they should even be considered "groundbreaking." Someone once said that good artists borrow, great artists steal. With that in mind, consider everything you like and enjoy in music, film, and the arts in general simply an improvement upon the thing before it. Tool isn't groundbreaking. They didn't invent anything new, but they did introduce millions to music with a time signature other than 4/4. There's a lot of instances where something that looks new and amazing is just something that was done before, but done differently, or with an improvement.
"Groundbreaking" should only apply to construction jobs. Using it in the entertainment industry just creates too much of a potential to over-sell and over-hype what might probably be a really good thing.
It's like magazine subscriptions. Sure they'd like you to pay for the subscription, but at $10 a year for Wired, for instance, it's at the bottom of their list. They want eyeballs, and lots of them, to justify their prices for advertising space to folks like Sony, Chrysler, Nissan, Subaru, BWM, you get the idea...
Real is trying to get eyeballs to justify their advertising space. Their clientele? BMG, Warner, Sony, EMI, you get the idea. You think they make money from kids buying mp3s? No? Well do you think Sony Label is getting free listing spots on the Real Catalog? Don't think so.
If anything the labels are finally wising up. Give the people cheap downloads and eventually they will wind up in a retail store to buy the physical product. Isn't that what alot of us do anyways?
"Cars are already designed to try to clue you in to what the driver is thinking..."
Yes, well, drivers have to actually be thinking for it to be of any use.
I am posting this comment from the back of a volkswagon situated mere yards above the surface of a subterranean Antarctic lake, using a satellite-transmitted, hotGrits-encrypted signal relayed from a hut in soviet russia, off natalie portman's summer home, and into the slashdot server, all for profit, nothing but net.
Now you know damn well this is slashdot, so I call bullshit until you post pictures of this monstrosity. Otherwise, you're out of your gourd if you think I'm buying that one (pun intended.)
Also for further reading enjoyment, I submit this article.
And I'm pretty positive I didn't ask for you to be a bastard about it. If I was talking out of my ass, I wouldn't stake my slashdot rep on it, despite the thin veil of anonymity it offers. In case you weren't aware, there is a level of creditability you risk when you say things you nothing about...well, maybe you don't, but you will now:)
I hope you weren't referring to the ERGM as a missile because it's not. ERGM stands for Extended Range Guided Munition, not missile. Furthermore, the ERGM's effective range is approx. 41 nm, therefore, you would not use it on a target of such high range, and it would not have a "hang time" of 60 minutes (try 4-5 minutes on within range targets.)
So yeah, the rail gun is a better weapon but the comparison is inaccurate.
By the way, I work for Raytheon.

And therein lies the power of the press.

So then its edible poison...
He was referring to MS's history of throwing your mother's vase against the wall, cutting the brakelines on your car, and kicking your dog.
To my knowledge, Mozilla has never done that.

"...my total lack of interest in any news."
If this is true, then what the hell are you doing here?

Wait, isn't that what got me here in the first place??

Is anyone else having problems with google?
I'm a livejournal user, and I can confirm everything you've just said. I think I keep my journal around for sentimental reasons these days.
Word.
Because $100,000 is hardly enough to live on when your coke habit costs you $85,000 a year (I'm figuring in hookers as part of that total, btw.)
What part of, "It's Funny, Laugh" did you fail to understand?
Let's leave "floppy drive" out of this one.
The Fact Sheet, or... From Whence the Information Cometh.

I mentioned that I work for Raytheon, the producers of the ERGM. I have the fact sheet sitting right here. That's my data.

Warkegstanding? Warmonkeybarring? Warflossing? Oh wait...Warkaya...umm...nevermind!
Cmon man, this is slashdot! There's no place here for your opinions!
Your boss probably has half a hard drive full of spy/crap/malware...oh wait, Outlook and IE, you say? There's the problem right there.
"Now we're supposed to think clown+Hamburger+MP3 is sane?"
First time I read that, I thought it said, "clown+Hamburger+mp5."
I imagined a clown brandishing a automatic firearm after consuming a mad-cow tainted burger. Sane? I think not...
Jesus tap-dancing Christ, you moderators need to start making a note of the goddamned timestamp before you mod something redundant.
