Another part of the problem is that there is just so much damned land in the U.S. it's easier and cheaper to grow horizontally rather than vertically. I've always believed the suburbs are the roots of all of America's woes. Living there requires cars for the most part. Employers move there because there is population and land is cheaper. Then it may get a little more expensive so people move even further out. And the cycle continues.

I'm in Seattle and cringe whenever I see these full on developments starting up in places like North Bend or even Issaquah and further. North Bend is practically in the Cascades! And then people start complaining that mountain lions are eating their children. No shit! Don't YOU try to kill mice and bugs when they enter YOUR house? Damn suburbanites! Give me a dense city or the remote country, NOT the suburbs.

I also believe the suburbs are the reason why so many damn people are fat in the U.S. too. No one walks. I'd love to see a study of obesity in America that compares the suburbs with the city. And I'm sure if you are out on some ranch in East Nowhere, you are probably going to be more fit too. This is complete speculation and a discussion for another day, but it annoys me.

On another note I have never liked stickers that say "Save the Planet." Saving the planet assumes we are great enough to be able to destroy it. Mother Nature could take us out any damn time she pleases. And you know what? THE PLANET CHANGES!! If humans didn't exist plants and animals would still become extinct, temperatures would rise and fall and continents would drift. What those stickers should say is "Save the Humans." But I guess that sounds too selfish for most greens that like to come off as holier than though and purely benevolent. And I actually consider myself to be a fairly green sort of person. But my green-ness is derived mostly out of selfish motivations and I realize this (which in the grand schemes of things EVERYTHING anyone does is out of selfishness, but that's a whole 'nother discussion). I like to be able to breathe clean air, I like to drink clean water, I like trees, I like blue sky, I like to not have to pay two arms and three legs for gas nor do I like to depend on foreign oil for energy needs.

And wouldn't increased CO2 increase plant life (hence the term "greenhouse effect") and then in turn lower the CO2 in the air. Similar to checks and balances in politics or the basics of the market economy and the profit motive for entering a particular market. But then again, most of my knowledge is derived from 9th grade Earth Science.

Although not directly related to the topic I always recall a scene in the movie Casino that I saw on USA. In that scene they edit dialogue from Joe Pesci. Instead of saying "fuck" it is changed to something like "frick." In the very same scene and less than a minute later they show him jabbing a pen into a guy's neck UP CLOSE and killing him instantly. I've always wondered why things like this can be shown but you can't use profane language or show a tit (Janet Jackson notwithstanding). Of course I am only speaking of American TV.

  14. Re:What we need is... Meta Moore's Law on Why We Need a Second Moore's Law · · Score: 2, Interesting

You are so right! In fact, I'd say that Moore's Law was far from a new idea. It applies to just about everything and anything. Remembering back to Econ 101 (albeit cloudily so) many people back in the 18th and 19th centuries were freaked out that soon there wouldn't be enough land for crops to feed the increasing populations. And they were right...based on current conditions. What they never took into consideration is the advancement in technology which provides higher and higher yields on less land. He's making arguments almost as if battery technology will stand still while processor power keeps increasing.

And let's not forget that necessity is the mother of all invention and of course the profit motive of every corporation out there. If there's money to be made, things will happen. It's the immutable law of capitalism, which isn't that much different from Moore's Law.
