Did you stop to consider that/. IS slow? I read a few other news aggrigation sites every day and/. is almost universally a day or two behind the others. These aren't news sites I'm comparing it to here, but other aggrigators. It's gotten so that I read BoingBoing throughly and just scan/. to see what I missed. It's a problem of the editors not caring. Based on story submissions that several people I know and myself have gotten rejected only to see the same story a few days later I think they aren't fully checking the storys that come in. It seems to me like they're looking at the inbox saying "sheesh... 500 messages" reading maybe the first 50 and then just rejecting the others. Maybe after they see the same subject enough times they'll click it to see what's up. It's pretty clear that the editors don't care as much as they use to... just look at all the dupes we get.
As an American who, like any good American, speaks only American English and has only been to 2 countries (Canada IS still a seperate country, right?) I can confirm it's international appeal. I'm only 1/3 of the way into it and I've already had myself more good laughs than I would expect from most Hollywood movies. I'm sure I miss quite a few of the inside jokes, but it's funny enough without them to still make it funny.
Note that the macho American talk at the beginning was just my way of making fun of a number of my fellow countrymen and not me actually talking down to you. All in good fun:)
"Legally, the rating system is entirely voluntary. However, signatory members of the MPAA (major studios) have agreed to submit all of their theatrical releases for rating, and few mainstream producers (outside the pornography niche) are willing to bypass the rating system due to potential effects on revenues. Therefore, it can be argued that the system has a de facto compulsory status in the industry. ...
The minimum age for unaccompanied patrons at R films, and all patrons at X films, was originally set at 16 and by 1970 raised to 17 (in some areas the age may be higher still, often 18 but in rare cases as high as 21), though theater owners could still allow children into R-rated (but, at least in theory, not X-rated) films without being accompanied by an adult since the rating system is technically voluntary and does not have the force of law behind it (those films with strong enough content to merit an X rating being presumably subject to obscenity laws at one governmental level or another)."
Ultimately they need to be subject to the same obscenity laws (they are), but not be prejudiced against. This is censorship at the government level and that is unacceptable in our country.
Someone really should go weld the judge's gas tanks closed and put a sticker on them that says "sorry, but this is a one time use vehicle. refueling is not allowed". Maybe that'd drive the point home.
It's "Pirates OF Silicon Valley." If the editors (Zonk) had bothered to follw the link that those word make he would have easily caught this. What's/. coming to?
1) I like.Net more than Java 2) Microsoft did something right with it (IMHO) 3).Net seems to work well 4) Java's slow and always has been. Can't really argue w/ that... it IS. (admittedly it was said in a flameish way) 5) if you want to use.Net maybe you should use it with Mono as MS's server software isn't trustworthy
And that's flamebait... sigh. One derogatory statement in 5 and people condemn the whole thing.
nope... Sun's. I will admit that they've gotten it to be quite a bit faster over the years, but it's still noticably slower than native apps. I know several people to use it simply because they can detect the lag.
Ok... let me get this out there first. I like the.Net framework (not all the stuff M$ tried to label as.Net after they realized that they were on the right track).
However, this study is flawed..Net 1.0 came out 6 YEARS after Java 1.0... it's not exactly fair to compare them as pure equals. Considering that they're so similar you have to take into account that M$ had time to see what was wrong w/ Java and fix it. It's kinda like saying "Well, this brand new bridge is far supperior to that one over there that was built 200 years ago. I mean, sure it's better looking, but this one is stronger AND lighter." People learn things and then implement them... is that so hard to understand?
Having worked with both Java and.Net a bit it is my belief that the.Net framework is the only GOOD piece of "software" that Microsoft has EVER turned out. All the libraries (that I've ever used) have worked correctly, all of the apparent risks of vulnerability have been due to my own code, and, if nothing else, you execute a program and it will run before next Christmas (not something you can say for Java). I've been pleased with it and I wish more people would make use of it (though maybe in MONO form as I don't think their server "solutions" stack up to this piece of wonderfullness).

Oh yeah... they also aren't convicted anti-competative monopolists. Got any more examples? IBM? They're on here weekly for giving code to the OSS movement. SCO? We only bash them too. Most of us don't hate Microsoft because they don't write OSS code... we hate them because they're anti-competative and do illegal and immoral things.

The way to figure wattage is to multiple voltage by amperage. In this case 22 * 60. If you plug that into a handy dandy calculator you'll come out with 13.2 kW.
If you figure that electricity costs run about $0.08 per killowatt hour (rough national average) then 13.2kW * 1hour * $0.08 = $1.056 per hour to run. You know what? I hate chopping wood so much (not to mention the time involved) that it's worth a buck five to me to run this thing.
In the interest of spreading "link-love": How can you discuss Cory Doctorow without even linking to his site or mentioning that he's an editor at BoingBoing?
although how they'll crank one out in a year is beyond me
What if they've BEEN working on it and just not mentioning it to anyone? For all we know intel may have a G5 that runs cool enough (and uses little enough power) that we could soon see G5 Powerbooks. Lets just wait till Monday and see...

oh jeeze... I forgot it just went up last month. As of March 8, 2005 the Passport Fees are now $97... that doesn't include the "execution fee" which seems to start at $30 and go up. So yeah... minimum cost is now about $123.
yeah, it is... I've wondered why they couldn't put a little checkbox (or similar) on our drivers licenses that indicates that we're citizens... would make it so much easier. Especially considering that I have to have one of those anyhow and a passport is $90. Come to think of it, I had to show my birth certificate when I got my drivers license in the first place (they needed two forms of ID).
I called last night and talked to a guy for about 5 minutes. They're keeping up with where everyone's phoning from on a map. Tell them you read about it on Slashdot, they like to hear where you heard from. I was the 112th person to call from BoingBoing.
