GIMP goes SVG

Fellas, fellas. Settle down. I'm sure we can all come to some kind of agreement. There are plenty of graphic designers who never go to print. If they like using GIMP or PainShop Pro (not a typo), let them have at it. For those who need to do professional quality print work, there's plenty of options in the proprietary world. I use GIMP exclusively myself because I got sick of paying tons of money when the only thing I do is edit web graphics and my own personal photos. Photoshop just weasn't worth it for me especially since GIMP could do everything I needed. I'm NOT a pro, so I don't miss CMYK. There are few home users that would. I tried PainShop Pro and we just didn't get along adn well MS Paint leaves something to be desired. (Especially since I no longer run Windows at home) GIMP is a great piece of software that's fun and easy to use. But it's not for everyone. Some people like paying for something with a name even if they don't need the feeatures. Let them go for it!:) And for the pros who do need the professional print features, they can certainly afford to invest in the tools of their trade no matter how outrageous the prices may be.
And with the new additions it sounds like it's certainly getting a nice upgrade. I can't wait for 2.0.:) Even if some people equate it with Paintshop Pro, it's still cheaper. And as far as it's abilities, take a good look at this excellent, free online book on the GIMP.
What more could anyone who doesn't need to go to press ask for?
One of the biggest problems with a lot of people today is that they equate economic success with success in general. However, in the case of Apple and Steve Jobs, the success is in pushing new boundaries that other companies didn't want to touch. Apple has been VERY influential (and therefore Steve Jobs). They popularized the GUI, they brought a sense of style to computing (which is very important regardless of what anyone may think), they shifted the look of the box itself from the ugly beige box to the sleek designer models and now they are bringing Unix and 64 bit processing to the consumer (It could be argued that Sony did this with the Playstation).
The Linux crowd and Torvalds have been hugely successful in starting a movement away from proprietary OSes and again making this movement more visible. Of course *BSD was there first as well as GNU, but with Linux the concept was popularized among the clued in folks in the IT world. Whether you like Tovalds or not, you cannot refute that he has influenced the IT world tremendously with his work.
The best thing is that neither Jobs nor Torvalds needed to be the dominant market leader to influence anyone. There is more power in thought than money. That is the way things should be everywhere.
I post this here mostly to clarify any misconceptions that folks might have about XF86. On the other hand I say bravo to anyone who can provide an alternative to XF86. We could use one. Even if this project turns out not to be "it". Personally I'm holding out for this one. And keep in mind folks, do not throw the baby out with the bathwater!
He did a series of audio stories (not for broadcast) that had a few episodes. Apparently a lot of people liked them because I hear that he was supposed to be quite good.
Please note that it's a very different technique from the one described six months ago in a previous Slashdot reference, Surgery with Femtosecond Lasers."
...must mean that Slashdot doesn't like it when people point out duplicate stories. The actually went out of their way to make sure everyone knows that this isn't a dupe. Now THAT's funny.
Damn! The guy in figure three has a REALLY tiny penis! That's just unbelieveable! I'm NOT kidding or trolling, just look at it. It must be about 3/4 of an inch thick.
I'm still hoping that Alan Davies will get the part. He'd be perfect based on his stint on Jonathan Creek. However, I don't think he will get it simply because of the similarities between Jonathan Creek and Dr. Who. The major one being that Creek is a "hero" of sorts who doesn't use brawn but uses his brain.
??? Baby Boomers? What about GenXers? I'm a little too young to be Generation X, but I know a few who are just as into Dr. Who as I am (born circa 1970).
He's obviously a neo-con in Dem's clothing. Look at Bill O-lielly's "No Spin" approach to things. He claims to be non-partisan and be on YOUR side, but he always preaches from the right. Welcome to the new politics of politics.
Hot damn! That's pretty smooth. I love the idea of having a vacuum that can be an internet appliance as well. I guess someone had to do it eventually. What? Oh... you said Rumba not Roomba.
With style-retarded heads like Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, they've got a good way to go. The reason that Apple has the image it does is STEVE JOBS. Face it, whether you like him or not (personally I do) he is a stylish man. Back in the 80s he always wore those black turtlenecks and trendy glasses. He KNOWS what style is. Unless someone want's to get the guys from Queer Eye to do a makeover on Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, the business image is going to be hard to break. Besides, I can predict what's going to happen anyway. They will try to add coolness to their image and then proclaim success to the investors after six months regardless of the true outcome. Eventually everyone will want to look like Microsoft products because of the buzz surrounding the new look. The buzz that was self-perpetuating. This will work because most business folks don't have the slightest idea what style really is. They think "roughing it" is wearing a pair of khakis and a polo shirt to work on Fridays.
I misread the post and thought it said that The Matrix Revolutions is going to be simultaneously released in the 70s. THAT WOULD be an accomplishment. I wonder what that would do to Star Wars and the LOTR trilogy in retrospect?;P
There's little we can do. Last week we hear about two indian villages being hit with meteorites, we've been having inexplicable power failures and now this?
What is it going to take to get people to realize the severity of the situtation? The only reason this info is being kept from the mainstream is that our lords and corporate masters don't want an economic downturn. They are well aware of this situation and have made plans. They will still be here after the disaster. Is that what you really want? Do you want that lot to rebuild civilzation with what's left of us as slaves? Come on folks! It's time to revolt!
I can't sanction it's use. Notice in the diagram on the home page of the linked article. It has two copies of MS Cock built in. (Seriously, look closely at the diagram abd you will see I'm not lying) Aside from the fact that most Microsoft employees aren't noted for being well endowed. I just can't sanction the use of Microsoft software in an open source product!
...all I can picture is the "Rock-em Sock-em Robots" (as MS and Yahoo) having at each other. It's a damn funny image if you ask me. Speaking of which, how many here think that iD software got their inspiration for the Doom and Quake soldiers from Rock-em Sock-em Robots?
I wish I could find the person who came up with this buzzword and slay them. This is the most overused shell game in the corporate world to make peons feel as if they have a chance at getting farther in life. It's basically the equivalent of "Rah-rah"! You can't create wealth as the value of many things fluctuates unpredictably and becoming wealthy has a lot more to do with luck, than a process. Steve Jobs and the Woz didn't create wealth by working hard until they got there. They were in the right place at the right time. I'm not discounting the work they did, but what I am saying is that you or I could work as hard as they did, or even harder to be just as successful and never make it. Mostly due to luck.
Another reason why I dislike the "create wealth" meme, is that there is a limited amount of wealth. Wealth does not increase. Therefore, only a limited number of people can be wealthy. There isn't some magic formula that one can use to just conjure up wealth. There is no "great idea" that will be guaranteed to capture the public's imagination. One case in point: the movie the Blade Runner was a complete flop in the box office when it came out in 1982. Ridley Scott and a lot of the people involved worked very hard at creating a plausible future with great effect. But, the public just wasn't ready for it at the time (wrong place, wrong time). However, when it came out on video, it became one of the bigger sleepers of the 20th century. There is a huge following for that film now. While some of the following is certainly due to the effort that they put into making the film, the majority of it's success post-box office is again, luck.
Face it people. There is no creation of wealth as it is a limited resource with an uncertain lifespan. What's valuable today is tomorrow's garbage rotting in the human detritus pile. Who uses polaroid instant cameras in this world of digital photography? Polaroid filed for bankruptcy. They were riding high in the 70s and 80s. Here today, gone tomorrow, that's the reality of wealth. Some people are just lucky and others arent't. The rest of us just try to live a normal life.

Eddie Izzard is this hip comedian from England. If you had an ounce of good taste you would know this.

Come on folks the parent was damn funny! It needs a few upmods for being funny. I will give it a virtual mod of Funny +2.

Maybe that joke about Microsoft making something that doesn't suck (vacuum cleaner) may be coming to real life very soon?

Ahhh yes. Another stupid American. Sounds like you have a lot in common with our appointed henchman Bush.
