    So, it's like an episode of Scooby-Doo basically, everyone knows the lights are cars but the local area has used it as sort of fun way of attracting tourists and they even have a festival around the event.

    "I know that the article summary took great pains to point out that few birds are out this far from land, but you just know that one or two will be killed by one of these turbines. It is inevitable."


    I also think that it's likely that birds will become attracted to the platforms because of the fish that will gather to feed and hide around the platforms. Plus there are other denizens of the deep who will see this as a great place to rest and mate.

    In response to the earlier Slashdot article which argues that innovation has slowed down...there is now a risk of Skodas exceeding the speed limit. I'd call that progress.


    There was always a risk of speeding in a skoda. But now, thanks to these GPS units, there's next to no chance of you driving of a cliff.

    Not quite Kemosabe!

    You're entirely discounting scale of economies. There are many industries in the world today that can produce items cheaper than smaller competitors. I don't see how von neuman machines can out compete some of these industries.

    I believe that those industries with natural scale of economies (like batch processes) will probably still out compete santa claus machines. It'll take less energy to melt the ingot for 100 lamp shades than it would to melt one ingot a hundred times.

    You have to consider the efficiency of the replicator itself. Does it require two tons of steel to make one ton of swords?

    Still, I can imagine this being a very popular hacker toy.
