Is this the same CSM that printed the really obviously faked 'evidence' that George Galloway had accepted a gazillion dollars in crude oil from Sadam Husian and then had to pay him hundreds of thousands of dollars in libel damages?
you forget one thing, live shows, artists make most of their money on live shows
Evidence for this ? I used to think this till I spoke to people I know working on tours. The cost of touring is massive and the artists tend not to make huge sums of money so do still need recording revenue. Also how do you propose that you come up with the large deposits needed to secure the venue bookings and down-payments for the sound and lighting crews etc if they don't get paid for recordings.
I dont think the economics of the music industry are as simple or black and white as regularly made out here.
While it is true that linux has better hardware detection than Windows the range of hardware usable with windows is much larger than on linux because you can download manufacturers drivers rather than having to rely on comunity supplied ones. In addition the performance and feature set of the linux drivers is in many cases inferior to the windows versions.
In the example you gave the HP printer will be able to print right away using CUPS but things such as status monitoring and many of the more advanced features such as printing for special paper types are not available.
3D acceleration certainly does not just work for linux. It is much harder to set up and doesn't perform as well as windows particularly if you have an ATI card. 3 months of pain to get my Radeon Card working adequately.
There are many things which linux does much better than Windows but hardware support is a great example.
Your example of the car failing within 4 weeks is wrong. The car may fail within 1 day or never, you are not guarenteed that it will fail within 4 weeks because the failure rate is 1.77%
To illustrate a scratch card has a 1 in 5 chance of you winning. Do you definately win if you buy 5 ?
This is the misunderstanding of probability which allows casinos to prosper.
"What the jury wasn't told is that the defendant has twelve prior convictions for raping sixteen-year old girls." Pardon me?
The reason for not revealing past convictions is to prevent the police simply rounding up the usual suspects and getting a conviction on weak evidence as jurors would assume that if they have done it in the past they must have done it this time.
You may or may not agree that this is a good reason to withhold this information but it would make a fair trial very difficult if it was
routinely revealed.
I'm always curious when I hear Americans saying that they need guns to protect themselves from their government. How much is use is a handgun or a even an assault rifle in the hands of someone with no military training going to be against a tank ? Or an airstrike ? In Afganistan they all had AK47's, knew the country better than the marines and still got their asses handed to them. What exactly do you think owning a hand gun/ riffle will allow you to prevent? I'm honestly curious.
I'm not denying that for many people it goes smoothly but its still a really common experience to have hardware, e.g. wireless cards, not work. Also you haven't commented on the problem I highlighted that installing graphics drivers is a complete pain in the arse even if it works as intended. When I had an NVIDIA card, and their linux drivers are much better than ATI's, it still involved much command line use to get the drivers installed. If you upgraded the kernel then you had to compile a new kernel module. There are many things which are better about linux, the windows command line is woeful, really poor but there a good deal more things which are better on windows.
The installer issues I mentioned are software based and affect you no matter which brand of HD you use. Having a bug in a final release which renders most of the software on your multi boot system useless is increadibly poor and if the evil empire had done this we would all be laying in to them and rightly so. I have to say that critising MS for problems with their software but then completely ignoring the huge problems that exist with much open source stuff seems hypocritical and counter productive. How can OS software ever compete with proprietry if we all pretend there are no problems. It worked fine on my computer isn't going to cut it if you want linux to become mainstream.
The linux installers still have major issues. It's total head in the sand stuff to claim that installing linux is as easy as windows. The main distro I've used are mandrake, redhat and fedora and the installers have all caused problems with partition tables. In particular FC2 had that great bug which fucked the partition table geometery and made other OS's installed unbootable. FC3 installer has a bug which causes the installer to fail if you have used disk management tools such as Norton Ghost or Drive image.
I use linux for work every day and it really anoys me when I have to read the same crap on slashdot about how linux is better in all ways compared to windows. If we don't acknowledge the many problems that exist with linux how are they ever going to be fixed?
Like using an ATI graphics card for 3D acceleration. On windows click - click-restart done.
Linux :
Linux download latest version of drivers
install rpm
Switch to run level 3
run configuration prog.
Manually edit X config files because they forked
the fucker and your distro now uses xorg and the
config files aren't compatible.
Restart X
CRASH!
Wait 3 months for ATI to fix the bloody drivers.
When they can make installing your graphics drivers as simple as on windows we are getting somewhere.
Scotland chose to join the union so that analogy doesn't really hold up. (Treaty of Northhampton 1329)
Also we had a referendum on independance in 1979 and the majority voted against it. (33% for)
If the Scots are still pissed about Wallace getting killed and want independence, they should get it.
Probably shouldn't use Mel Gibson films as a source for historical reference.:->
I did a small course on evolution at med school and someone had done further research on the moth example.
The original study
There are two varieties of peppered moth, one is pale one is dark. With clean air the bark of the trees are covered in lichen and pale, therefore the number of pale moths eaten is lower than the number of dark moths. During the industrial revolution the
trees trunks were covered in soot and more pale moths were eaten by birds. Hence the
dark moths had a selective advantage.
This all sounded really convincing till someone analysed the original research and found a fairly major flaw. The moths had been pinned to the tree trunk so the observer could watch the birds feeding on them. This species of moth don't
naturally stay on tree trunks they hide in the leaves and grass at the bottom of the tree.
Probably not the best example to cite in support of evolutionism. The jist of the course was Darwins theory is the best we have currently but there are some problems a some of the supporting evidence. Close mindedness of both sides of the debate isn't very helpful but I agree intelligent design or creationism shouldn't appear in a science class.
A friend worked on a project which used windows XP
embedded and booted off flash memory set to read only. He managed to strip out unnecessary bits of xp and got the install size down to around 200MB if I remember correctly. It was for a museum display system. Shown here
It was also very effective at shooting down coalition planes because the on board software couldn't tell the difference between a Tornado or a Scud missile despite the Tornado having a transponder, flying at a completely different altitude, trajectory and speed.

"Mr Riggs said the US Army claimed the RAF airmen had not turned on equipment which tells radar systems like patriot whether a plane is a friend or an enemy.
"But what the army never disclosed publicly at the time was that the army Patriots were mistakenly identifying friendly aircraft as enemy tactical ballistic missiles", he added. "
I remember claims of 100% effectiveness being made about the original patriot at the time which were debunked in later analysis.
The bbc was considering doing something like this but they ran into problems with the amount of money they would need to pay the actors. I think equity kicked up a fuss about 'residual' payments.
You can carry more information at 2.4Ghz though.
Think of it this way if you use each peak to carry one bit of information then the frequency of peaks affects the data rate.
900 MHz = 900 M bps
2.4 GHz = 2400 M bps
To see how different encoding system work AM, FM PCM

here
I dont know about the whole EU but putting sublininal messages in tv broadcasts is illegal in the uk. They did an experiment on the bbc a few years ago where they got viewers to phone in and say if they thought that a picture of a neutral face was happy or sad. Half of the uk had a subliminal image of a happy face in their transmission, half had a sad face. They then used the prefix of your phone number to tell which you had seen. The results showed that the subliminal image had a slight effect but I dont think that the numbers would stand up to serious statistical analysis p>0.05 etc. They were only allowed to do this because they told you in advance that there was going to be subliminal images.
I also remember that there was a fuss made about the use of subliminal messages in G W Bush's election campain. democrats = RATS. At least this gave us the comedy footage of W trying to say subliminal;-)
There was a theory going in the uk that you could tell if one of the characters was a bad guy by the type of laptop they were using. All the bad guys appeared to be using pc laptops.
because his guitar slowly loses pitch during the course of the pieces he plays
As do all musical instruments during a performance. The performer adjusts accordingly to stay in tune. Its called intonation. Woodwind instruments change pitch depending on temperature so the natural pitch of the instument at the beginning of a concert is different to the end.
Player compensates by 'lipping' the pitch in the right direction. This is one of the major differences between amatures and pro's. The pros have very good intonation.
I feel that using pitch correction is just compensating for lack of skill by either the singer or player.
Actually the reaction you describe is not very efficient and only gives a net gain of 2 ATP ( adenosine tri phosphate)per glucose molecule which the bodies tissues use for energy.
Most of the bodies energy is generated by the Krebs ( Citric Acid ) cycle in the mitochondria which generates much more ATP. The glucose-6-phosphate gets converted to pyruvate and enters the krebs cycle. show here This give a net gain of 30 moles atp per 2 moles of pyruvate.
Incidently if you have sugar by products in your urine you should see your doc as you might have diabetes.
I found that the mozilla engine has a tendancy to mangle complicated table layouts. In particular a site I designed for a friends band looks ok in IE ( win & mac), Konkeror (spellling?) and Safari.
site here
Its totally mangled in
mozilla based browsers though. Can't find any reason for it. Possibly my poor html but it works fine in other browsers.
Anyone else seen this or suggest a way I can make it more mozilla friendly
I have also seen firebird do really wierd things to the layout of big corporate sites which are mainly IE dependant.
While this may appear true at first glance it does not take into account the finacial implications many hacks can have. If the virus wipes your hd and takes the report you were writing for the board of directors due tommorow. Oh and by the way your offline floppy was corrupted by the virus when you last saved the report.
In accordance with murphys third law of computing it breaks when you need it most.
Even more serious is hackers using your compromised machine to store something nasty like child pr0n on it. Try explaing to police that 'the hackers put it there'
(there was a case reported on the reg recently like this but i can't find the link)
Aside from that your unsecured machine is just a pain as it can be used for sending me spam or DoS attacks against servers. Its a falicy to say that it works out cheaper not to secure your machine.
They do a kit for about £30 that includes 50m of cat 5e, four boxes with double socket wallplates and four keystone jacks and tools. Just installed a network in my new house with this. Much neater than the old coax cable spagetti that I used to have. You can buy extra keystones but there are about £2.50 each which is a bit pricy.

Even worse is their glasgow maps which include lots of really bizzare errors.
example
For example the west end of the city has Inverquhomery Road instead of Great Western Road. University Avenue is called chewton way ?!?!
These are not exactly obscure parts of Glasgow. The university has only been there for 500 years you would think they could get Uni Avenue right.
